Life raft has an advantage over lifeboat as Liferaft launching procedure is easier during emergencies. The life raft inflates itself automatically as it sinks with the ship.
SOLAS chapter III gives all the details for types and the number of life rafts to be carried as per the size and type of the ship.
Life rafts are normally located on muster station, on port and starboard side near the lifeboat, and fwd and aft of the ship. The location generally depends on the size of the ship. Life rafts are stored in a fibreglass container, incorporated with a high-pressure gas used for inflating life raft at the time of emergency. A Hydrostatic Release Unit (HRU) is connected to raft container and ship, which release the raft even after the ship sinks in water.
The particulars of the raft are stencilled on the container which includes the capacity, manufacturing date, servicing date, company name etc. along with the launching procedure with a photogenic display for easy understanding. The basic survival items are already stored in the raft which includes rations, pyrotechnics, life jackets etc.
In this liferaft launching procedure video, we will see what are the different life raft release systems and launching procedures and how they work.

Hi there this is a great video but it does have a few inaccuracies which are worth mentioning just in case some one is using it for study. Sorry if I am a bit picky about the observations but I think it’s worth clarifying some staff. Keep up the hard work as you are doing a great job in teaching the future semen. If it weren’t for people like you there wouldn’t be such great resources for us to look up and learn from.
At 0:44 the life raft has no HRU, the seahorse slip is tied to a shackle
At 1:09 what is the cradle of the life raft for? Looks like it’s meant to roll over completely. So the HRU will work but the life raft might get stuck.
At 1:55 you can see the razor wire for ISPS, I would love to see how it would be handled if it had to be manually launched
At 3:00 the HRU should activate itself between 1.5 to 4 m. Once they are exp you are supposed to check them by tying them up, lowering and check if they are triggered. If they don’t work you are supposed to report the lot number to manufacturers
At 3:33 the life raft is more buoyant so it comes to the surface and the painter is supposed to break from the weak link not from the life raft. The weak link was done for such, as breaking from the raft could cause the life raft to be damaged. That is the very reason why the we tie the painter to the weak link and not to a ridged point on the deck.
At 5:25the davit launched life raft should also have bousing in lines once you open the top of the canister and they should be held upon so that you can pull it back in otherwise it might not be reachable for boarding.
At 5:59 you don’t have to have a person to lower the life raft from the vessel as you have a break release which can be activated from the life raft. Typically the davit launched life rafts are used due to high freeboard (more then 18m) so embarkation ladders might be difficult to use.
Preferably when rightining the raft try to turn the raft into the wind to help you towel it over.

@@marineinsight you mentioned that a raft is a small device. There are rafts however of 100 persons and more, pritty huge.
3:42, the painterline does not break at the weak link. It actually breaks the weak link itself. With that, the line stays connected to the raft. Not to the ship.
4:30, lifting in vertical position does not harm the raft at all. Nothing will happen as long as the painterline is not pulled. A raft of 20 persons weighs up to some 150 kg. So you"ll break your back before you break the raft.
5:33, before activating the davit launched raft, you should hold the bowsing lines, one on each side. This is to prevent the raft from spinning in the wind after it has been blown fully.
6:12, i activated some 100 rafts, not one opened upside down. The wind and seastate can flip it over so you indeed should know how to turn it back.
All in all some minor details to adjust. Too little to mention. But again, very nice animation. Best i have seen so far.

I want to know how they are going to throw the raft in over all of the razor wire in a manual deployment? Sure would hate to try and figure out where to haul my ass overboard to abandon and not bleed up the water and call all of the sharks in.
