With the first camera shot of Don Johnson everybody knew that this is the coolest guy on earth wearing a Rolex Presidential, three days beard, white clothes, men's suit combined with a t-shirt (!), cool sunglasses, smoking Lucky Strikes, and of course no socks ever = Sonny Crockett. A star was born and absolutely nobody could have played Sonny Crockett better than Don Johnson.
@@railtruckdriver853 Yes you are right as Johnsons former pilots were not a success and Hollywood knew very well about his alcohol/drug problems .. but thank God they choose Johnson and not Wilcox. They wanted to replace him a second time when he wanted much more money for every episode
Always loved this version of the opening music which they only played the night of the series premiere. Longer and cooler. An absoutely amazing show with awesome pop, rock, r&b and many other types of music and this sweet piece from the great Jan Hammer.
I just can't get over how dam good he is! Jan Hammer is a fantastic at playing with his performances in his concerts! Hammer is 💯 % in his work playing with the instruments out of this world!
The first several episodes used this theme before it was changed to the more iconic one that was used the rest of the show. It changed within the first 10 episodes or so.
Add also for those that don't remember - I think it was the first season with the light version of this theme (without the heavy guitar riff) that the logo "In Stereo" appeared at the bottom corner of the screen (for those tv sets that were capable of receiving stereo sound).
@@frednorris828I'm rewatching it again now, and this theme song has already been replaced with the classic one in episode 5 of the first season "Calderone's Return Part II" This theme song lasted a lot shorter than I remember, but I appreciate the changes they made, also the fact that the new one is actually synchronized with the theme
Pre-opening sequence: Ricardo Tubbs as a New York cop who ends up transferring to Miami. Post-opening scene: Jimmy Smits is a Miami cop who ends up on NYPD Blue.
This show in a way, gave birth to Power, Snowfall, etc. By that I mean, no other crime show that I can remember touched on the subject of the drug game/wars in the streets before this one. A real trail blazer💯, 40th anniversary.🙏🏿❤️🔥🔥🔥
I am wondering what the series would have been like if Larry Wilcox won the role of Sonny Crockett-and-what would the series have been like if Mark Harmon had replaced Don Johnson.
Yes -- the whole theme is synth (Fairlight CMI). Miraculous, given how labor-intensive it was: watch m.th-cam.com/video/6nPTZqnIfFM/w-d-xo.html, & note the 24x80 no-res graphics, the ancient KBD, & the 8-inch floppies.

@@andrewball_ I heard it was purely a mixing issue. The "synth guitar" was part of the track but somehow got lost off the theme. I might be wrong though.
I just assumed there was a decision to change it early on. There was this longer version for the pilot, but then there was a different 60-sec. version without guitar used for a few more episodes, then it was switched to the more iconic theme. Like I said, this was all within maybe the first ten episodes.@@80ssynthfan48

No TV series will ever beat this one, period.
A tv show that defined an entire decade.
defined mine! I was 10 years old with this show premiered in the fall of 1984. Loved the cars loved the boats and loved the bikini clad ladies!
Oh yes!

at one time did they consider casting Larry Wilcox from chips fame to play sonny Crockett. I think he even did a screen test for universal.

Wow! This intro is like if Miami Vice was a movie.
This was actually a made for TV movie, it’s 2 hours long. I watched it when it premiered.

Where's the rhythm guitar & bitchin' guitar solo?

Actually the solo was synthesiser put through guitar pedals. Jan did quite a bit of faking guitar sounds.
