I could watch 7 hours of this. That pitch is so beautiful to watch and so insanely nasty at the same time it’s perfect

His command of that cutter is impressive.

I think the reason his control is so good is because he has had only this fastball for so long, he always had a low horizontal movement four seam and now the movement has just flipped the other way, it’s very natural looking for him

Great video 👍. One of the nastiest pitches in the league. Wish the TV camera angles could do it more justice

The best thing about this is how mystified and defeated the hitters look...

It's one of the prettiest pitches in baseball. As a hitter you have to make that split second decision to let it go or not. He probably buries regular fastballs on that corner too.

It's so funny when batters get mad at the called 3rd strike on that section of the plate, as a hitter you know he throws that pitch constantly. You have to know it's a possibility

It's impossible to guess that with 2 strikes. Especially with his stuff that you have to contend with. He has a nasty regular fastball and slider too. To hit that cutter, you have to sit on it. Honestly, I wouldn't sit on the cutter because of how hard it is to execute what Burnes is doing.

That one that was down and away at 98. A bullet the comes back into the zone at the last split second. Unhittable. Just absolutely nastyness.

I like how they claim it’s a cutter, but some of these clips looked like 2 seams or sinkers with the movement running away from lefties. I don’t get how you can call that a cutter. I’m sorry.

because camera angles where its level and off to the side tend to have that effect of minimizing horizontal cut for righties and making it look like run. Look on baseball savant and stuff and you can see his cutter cuts 4.5 inches on average with only a couple leaking into a tiny bit of arm side run like 0.5 inches, whereeas his sinker runs arm 12 inches on average. cutters are usually in the 0-5 inch range of cut where 4 seams are like 5-13ish inches of arm side run and sinkers are like 11-18 inches of run.

All of those cutter pitches are hittable, left handed batters are thinking too much about pulling the ball these days. In the old days, lefty batters would drive those outside pitches on the corners to left field.

They look hittable to you probably because you're only seeing the cutters.

    • @hoanpham4545

This is a weird take...You realize he has an upper 90s fastball and a nasty slider too? As a hitter you have to take away something. You can't cover everything. There is a reason why batters are taking these pitches. It probably has been set up nicely with pitch sequence.
Now if you make the point that more batters in the past would have protected the plate more then I can buy that. It's still a 95-96 mph cutter...It's really hard to make contact with that if you aren't sitting on it. You have very little reaction time. If you are sitting on that cutter then he can bust you inside and/or bury the slider at your feet.
