@gilroy none I agree. I know back a few years ago I played to a 2 handicap. I got down to a 1.2 for a while, but mostly played for a 2. I can’t play anymore due to an injury but back then if I played from the tips and the scratch guy shot 85, he would give me two shots, so if I shot 87 from the tips I’d be happy, especially considering how long the course is. I think it’s like 7,400 or 7,500 yards from the tips. Back then I wasn’t an overly long hitter. 280 yards was a pretty good drive for me. I was fairly straight though and I could hit my irons and hybrid a long way. My short game was pretty weak, so that wouldn’t be able to help me.
85 is not bad for a 2.1 handicap. The course is deceptive first time out. I've played it 3 times and my best score was an 80 when I was a 3.5 handicap. The red course is tough too. Those two courses have all the hazard a fella could hope for. Bethpage rocks!
@@matthewfranz1124 I have seen scratch golfers struggle on some courses some days. And the Black is just tough for any one. As stated, even the Pros struggle out there.
I went to the Senior Open at Saucon Valley 2 years ago. I don’t golf but I follow it casually, especially the majors. Holy crap, you get tired just walking the hills and you cannot imagine how hard it is to hit a golf ball to within range of having a birdie putt. The tee shot at 17, where I spent a good chunk of time, was downhill and looked literally impossible. You just have to appreciate that these guys can hit the way they do.
Back in the 80’s I was a 5 handicap. Played a course in Columbus, Oh at a Country club where the women had just finished their Open! Good grief! I shot a 110 and felt lucky to get out alive! 7 inch THICK rough, lightning fast greens with all kinds if slope! Lots of respect for the ladies! Had a stroke 1.5 years ago and my swing hasn’t come back yet! May never...bummer!
I wish you well in your recovery, not only in golf, but your everyday life as well. Keep swinging and enjoy the greatest game you can enjoy all your life. God bless you.
I was a LI golfer. I used to play Eisenhower and Bethpage a lot on Saturday's and Sunday's before the computer systems went in and you had to literally bring a chair and sleep on line at 3 AM to tee off at 7 AM. Fun times! That sign was at Bethpage in 2000. I remember it when we played the green course.
I live 7 minutes from this complex. I play Black a 2-3 times each year (the others a combined over 50 times). Somewhere around 11-13 your legs start to get real heavy. The greens are not hard and the sand is a pleasure to hit out of, it is getting to the greens that is the hard part. If you are in the rough hit a wedge ( if you can find it) and be smart, hard to get a 5 iron on it. The last time I played I shot an 87 from the regular tees and I was having a good day off the tee and my SW was pretty accurate from 90-100. It is kept in unbelievable shape
I play Black a few times a year. Biggest lesson for me is that if you’re in the rough, don’t even think about anything other than a wedge to get out. Better bogey or a chance for par vs double or triple.
Absolutely. I played it 4 times in total and this is the smart way to do it. If you try and go for it out of the rough you won’t make clean enough contact to get it to the green or hit it accurately, so punching it out in the fairway and maybe advancing it a bit is really your only option. Sometimes you might get lucky in the fescue though. I did on the first hole one time
I played the Black about 5 years ago with a few friends. We could only get a late tee time so we only finished 14 holes before it got too dark. As a mid teens handicap I really didn't bother keeping score but I did manage to par 1, 6 and 14. It did feel good to hit a good drive off the first tee and get that par.
For everyone saying Luke couldn’t be a 2 handicap... From the tips, a 2 hcp is given 10 strokes, (par 71), and he shot an 85. Not bad for their first round there? Just my two cents
From the little they showed, his game did not reflect the game of a 2 handicap. I was having a hard time trying to figure out who the 2 was. They _say_ he shot 85
250 yards into the wind is a driver, is for me off 4.... And it's carry on a par 3, that's one brutal hole. Played many 230 yards par 3s but they're all been links courses and you can run them in.... Just miss the bunkers. Love the play this course, just to see what I'd shoot.... Lots probably
I don’t think I’d have a chance of breaking 100 at Bethpage from the tips. However, it looks like the forward tees are at about 6,200 yards. I might have a shot at it from there.
You can’t take lost ball strokes for not finding your ball in the rough alongside the fairway. All players should agree to the rough whereabouts of the ball and then the player should drop. We don’t all get the luxury of a gallery or a caddie acting as a spotter.
I have no idea... I wouldn't even take on Yellow, which is the "easiest" of the five, unless I was an avid to semi-accomplished amateur, which I am very far from! The scrub grass alone on any one of the courses at Bethpage cries out, "I'm taking your ball, Jack! Kiss your Even Par a long goodbye!"
Tiger won there in 2002 when he was the best player on the planet. Last year, he didn't make the cut there. It seemed to be too long for him at this stage of his career.
That freakin hill stretches from behind SUNY Farmingdale, across the green, black, and red courses all the way to 135. You hump your bag up and down that hill nine times. One day, you might hit into that hill 6 times and never use the same club. Other days, it might be your 8 iron every time, aside from the tee on 16.

Gotta say this course looks no harder than any other public course. It's just a lot prettier and has a "warning" sign up. It's "hard" cause even rich people suck at golf
A course near cleveland that closed was the hardest I've seen. It was Thunderhills. 7500 from the the thunder tees. And was an old fish hatchery, so water everywhere. Played Firestone south from the tips and wasn't as hard as Thunderhills. Unfortunately, it has been closed. Rumor has it, dean beaman said the pros wouldnt be happy if he put them on that course. But who knows. Also Avalon lakes in warren ohio tips out at I think 7600 from the back, and is dead flat . No downhill 480 plus par fours there. Give that one a shot.
Hi Jakefavre i played the Black course in November 2018 before the PGA we were off mainly forwardish tees, all of the really back tees were fenced off. All i can say is the conditioning was awesome for a Muni but it was LONG! On the 15th i hit good drive just into left first cut and hit 5 iron up the hill into what i thought was a green side bunker, sadly it was 25-30 metres short of the green. BTW Brookes hit driver -wedge off the back tees!
To recap, the overall scores were:
Luke Kerr-Dineen: 85 (from tournament tees)
Tim Reilly: 93

Luke Kerr-Dineen: 85 (from tournament tees)
Tim Reilly: 93
Josh Berhow: 104
I live on Long Island and I’ve played it 5 times. My scores were between 97-100. On a “normal” public course I’ll shoot low 80s.
Out of 90 holes I’ve had 3 pars 1, 10, and 13
Ugliest swing I’ve seen and he’s complaining he has to layup on a par 4 at bethpage..... talk about misguided ego
Their handicaps must be based on their best round ever.
great video, great public course, no tee times, and the price for a new yorker is?
58 bucks
Videos will never depict the huge elevations. The 16th is a massive uphill, impossible to judge.

What did they shoot ?
120 110 105

They didn't give you a stroke, Josh? That's pretty tight.
People who have never played the black before don’t really know how hard it actually is. Low handicappers can easily shoot 80s and 90s

Not to long, he was to wayward and spent too much time in the rough. Cant make birdies if playing second shots from the rough.

65.00? Wow. That's so cheap. I'm sure it's more now but still. To play where they hold the Valspar in FL, it triple that.
