13:04 “no one actually played mario run” Super Mario Run was the most-downloaded game for Android devices in 2017. As of September 2018, the game has been downloaded and installed on about 300 million devices worldwide The numbers have since gone up cuz of the mario movie
The changes to enemies in Super Mario Land were probably the result of having to make them work on limited hardware, and in canon, they probably figured at the time that being set in a different kingdom would mean they could be given different names. It's still pretty funny that they came up with the name "Bullet Biff" though
Well, the original Super Mario Land used Japanese names for most of the enemies (except Fly and Chicken) "Bullet Biff" originally had the JAPANESE name for Bullet Bill, or actually, a "mangling" of it, "gira" (from "kira", or "killer") But also, I think it has something to do with the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto was NOT involved with that one, it was a Gumpei Yokoi property. Also, the way Shigeru Miyamoto sometimes handles his properties, and gets UPSET by others handling his properties (see: original Donkey Kong Country series, AKA Rare WANTING to be swallowed by Microsoft because of how Mr. Miyamoto would make them uncomfortable), wouldn't be surprising he'd insist that Super Mario Land is non-canon. But then again, certain stuff that's supposed to be canon has been changed....the "Koopalings" or "Koopa Kids" were originally children of Bowser. Then they were gone, and eventually it's decided that "Bowser Junior" is the only child of Bowser, and when they do return, they're some kind of contracted gang or something!
Loved the video, the only thing wrong with it is that both Super Mario Land and Super Mario Run are confirmed canon by nintendo, and obvs now Wonder, but ya get the point :)
“No one actually played Super Mario Run” False, I used to play it for a while, making me living evidence. Daisy was even one of the characters I frequently used once I unlocked her. The double jump was pretty handy.
Super Mario Land takes place in a different kingdom, so having different enemies makes sense. Plus, Super Mario Land’s story is mentioned in Super Mario Land 2 and that game is pretty much just a normal Mario game. If you want to argue that SML2 isn’t canon, then that means Wario’s origin game isn’t canon. Additionally, that puts into question every Wario Land game after that since Wario Land 1 is SML3. Other than Wario Land, the only other place Wario exists is in spin offs. If Daisy isn’t canon, Wario isn’t canon.
@@waddlepikmin227 There is one thing I forgot about, Wario is in SM64DS, but it could be argued that it isn’t canon because it might be a retelling of SM64. If it is canon, it’s kinda a weird place to canonically introduce Wario. Wario probably wouldn’t be Mario’s rival if that’s where he’s introduced.
@@2hd4me true. They do have a little bit of a scuffle in the intro cutscene, but its hardly any different from the antics Mario and Luigi get into in other titles, like SMB3’s title screen.
What find to be annoying is how people consider Wario to be a Canon character when he only been in one mainline mario game while daisy been in three and people still refused to accept she was always Canon character. Kids on the net can be very annoying at times.
Hi! This video is intriguing in concept- as a Mario lore expert myself, I was intrigued to see your conclusion. However, your conclusion rules are… pretty flawed, in my opinion. Let's go in order: Crossovers: while the principle here is quite good, it doesn't apply to games that still focus on Mario while also having guest stars- games like Mario Kart 8, Super Mario RPG, etc. are definitely canon (see Super Mario Odyssey directly referencing Mario Kart 8). Only games that are primarily crossovers should fall into this. Authenticity: this one is a bit weird to me. It's entirely subjective- and the example you cited also falls under the crossovers rule. What other games actually fall into this? Similar themes: I heavily, heavily disagree here. As an example, the Super Mario RPGs probably world be excluded by this rule - yet they're explicitly canon. Baby Peach, the Ice Flower, and Goomboss are all from RPGs, and it introduced E. Gadd's associations with time travel and coffee, both things that came up in Gooigi's creation. Timeline consistency: This one is incredibly, incredibly flawed. For one, the Mario crew *has* time travel- it's used in Partners in Time, Yoshi's New Island, and Luigi's Mansion (3DS), to name a few games. Characters interacting with their past selves isn't an issue. Likewise, nobody actually comes back from the dead- you have corpses still possessed by their spirits, and Mario temporarily taking the form of a Boo, but neither actually feature the dead coming back to life. That's never happened in Mario (Dry Bowser is explicitly not dead). And your fifth rule is completely arbitrary. Games need a reason to be canon or non-canon. That said, based on what Nintendo references in bios, games, and such, I think I can provide a different set of rules that matches Nintendo's point of view much more clearly. Did Nintendo publish it? Is it not primarily a crossover? These two rules provide a much more comprehensive view of what Nintendo considers canon, as it contains all games and subseries referenced within themselves as well as Nintendo's bios and the like. Almost every game featured in this video is canon. I can provide proof for them. Super Mario Land: Introduced Daisy. Is the prequel to the game that introduced Wario. Is brought up in games like Super Mario Run. In addition, you also failed to mention the Fighter Fly- it's a returning enemy that is in the game. Nintendo still published it, and it's still brought up from time to time- it's canon. NES Open Tournament Golf: Mario's outfit here has recurred in Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Golf: Super Rush, and Mario Kart Tour. Mario Tennis: The thing you mentioned about "Mario and Bowser putting their differences aside" just… doesn't hold up. Mario is very forgiving, so it applies to him, but Bowser views it as a way to beat Mario. He's petty - he'll take any opportunity he can get. This is brought up multiple times in multiple sports games. Also, Bowser is fine with being dropped in magma, and he doesn't remember the events of Super Mario Galaxy. In addition, Nintendo's bios for Mario on various websites mention his affinity for tennis- "He's an athletic person, and whether it's tennis or baseball, soccer or racing, he always performs well and looks cool." - Mario Portal. Mario Party 3: The Mario Party series has multiple outfits return in games like Odyssey. In addition, Mario Party 4, the sequel to 3, debuted the Mega and Mini Mushrooms. Smash Bros: yeah this one is non canon. She was never a color swap of Peach, though- Peach wore her colors in Melee through 4, and she was a full fighter in Ultimate. Mario Kart: Double Dash: This game introduced Toadette to the series, who would go on to appear in Super Mario Odyssey. In addition, karting is brought up in bios (see Tennis) and is on the timeline on FLUDD's screen in the opening of Sunshine. Kart is canon. As for Bowser and Dry Bowser… that's pretty clearly just… not canon? They're both playable characters in Dr. Mario World, but you can't have them coexist in a stage- if you try to use one in a stage featuring the other you can't. They just don't canonically coexist, the same way there aren't four Marios in the GBA port of Mario Bros. Mario Superstar Baseball: Also mentioned in bios. Strikers: Also put in bios as something Mario has done. If Nintendo didn't consider these games canon, they wouldn't put them in bios summarizing things Mario has done. Olympic Games: Non-canon, yeah. Worth noting that Waluigi, in sports spin offs, is usually listed as a Technical type character, so him being Skill in Mario & Sonic isn't abnormal. Waluigi is real, though, his outfit is in Super Mario Odyssey and his actual appearances are canon as well- Kart, Party, etcetera. Fortune Street: Non-canon. Super Mario Run: I played this. Daisy gets lost and kidnapped by Bowser. When you free her, she becomes playable. Also, Nintendo considers it mainline. Dr. Mario World: The doctors are not legitimate in this game. In the intro, Mario, Peach, and Bowser all put on the outfits and grab the pills to combat the virus invasion- they're defending the kingdom from aliens, not performing actual medical procedures. The fact of the matter is, Daisy is canon. Most of her games can be tied back to canon in some way. Daisy is real.
