Thank you so much for this video. I was stuck in this exact same situation and tried everything, screw drivers, shim, credit card, and nothing worked. The latch is really banged up and doesn't go in all the way and doesn't move in a straight line. Your frustration made me feel like less of an idiot. If there are cases that stump pros, then I don't feel so bad. I bought the hook tools from HD and they did the trick.
OPTION 2B: Use heavy wire, like coat wire, fish through vertical crack in door, IN above top of latch, OUT through the bottom, AND PULL. Might help to make loops you can hold onto & use gloves 🧤 or towel to protect your hand. Basically the J-Wire option but through and out, like an old style burglar. Ps. I used scrap electrical wire, 14 or 12 gauge. Pss. On the “3-pins” comment, I was looking for 3 small “pins” to pull on the mechanism until I realized he was say, “take the entire door off” 😂
Tip: rather than using a screw driver, take a wire (I used. The wire on a lawn flag) bend it into a “J” and string it around the latch piece between the door and the door jamb, and then pull. The wire will pull the latch back into the door and it will opened like a charm. 😊
I couldn’t see the very things I needed to see. Half of it is off camera, especially about the new part. Now, gotta look for a video that will help me.
I couldn't get mine open with this option or anything else on YT. Mine has an auxiliary bolt to prevent a credit card or butter knife from opening the latch. I ended up cutting the bolt with a hacksaw blade by hand. Took about 15 minutes. (The right tool would have probably done it in 30 seconds). But still easier than I thought. Removing pins may have been quicker but mine has 4 hinges with two spring hinges and its a heavy door. Opted for the cut.
I used a hacksaw blade and thin flat head screwdriver between the door and the frame, to jimmy it open. I felt like I was breaking into my own house. It worked like a champ, got right in.
Exact same situation, Lousy camera work, but did get mine open using a putty knife and a slot head screwdriver be holding pressure and moving the latch inch by inch. I couldn't see the new latch due to poor camera work, hopefully I can get it at HD
Everything makes it seem that the person who made this video is more interested in being noticed that he knows how to fix it, but not in teaching you how to do it, since his video does not show anything about the part that is going to change, rather only his toolbox.
I've had a Kwikset and a Defiant latch freeze up on me. The only way I could deal with it was to take an oscillating tool with a carbide blade and cut the tip off of it.
Haven’t been able to open front door for 2 weeks. This thing won’t budge, tho before a screwdriver would open it quick. I’m a 78 year old woman who does everything and can’t afford to “call someone “.
I successfully used the credit/debit card trick from the outside to get my stuck door open with a seized/broken latch, so I can change the latch. The "J Hook" technique didn't work...Took less than two minutes.
😂 I’m a female and got mine out in seconds! ..and I have the smart locks! Where 😅you went wrong is you took off the knobs!! All you had to do was just loosen the screws but keep the knobs on to get that traction so it would move the latch a little!
What specifically were you doing during that time period with the pry tools and the screwdrivers, going back and forth, to get the latch open? My door is stuck closed and I don't know how to jimmie things to get it to release. Nothing I try gets the latch to pull back fully (yet).
I was attempting to release the latch and retracted enough to open the door. i was turning the flat head in order to get the latch to start retracting and then using the pick and small flat head to assist it the rest of the way
Dude! I tried your method for over an hour with no success. Went to Google who advised using a credit card to slip in between the latch and the door jamb. TWO seconds and I had it open.
Sometimes you get lucky and the latch isn't that bad and you can do that, I will tell you that sometimes that doesn't work, and I have drill or cut the latch out, I'm a Locksmith myself.
I have an issue where when i unlock the door with the key, the key turns all the way (almost complete circle) and when this happens it mis-aligns the interior lock knob. Is this something wrong with the latch itself that I could replace just that, or something internal in the lock mechanism?
Just spending 2 hours to fix this stupid Weiser or Schlage door handle, should just pop the door hinges. Replace it with no name brand, at least it would be easier to pop open.
Thanks. Tried whatever-tf this guy was doing, think he just got lucky. Mine will not retract all the way, period. Remove door from hinges, remove the pos, that's the way to go (quicker and no damage from prying).
@@vanontom 😂, yeah, i was only smarter after the fact, my door was tight fit, if i was doing it for living; doors hinges were always the weakest point to open, lot faster.
This literally just happened to me. So glad my daughter was inside the house and let me in from the basement. I would’ve been locked out otherwise. Ugh.
NEVER Buy KWIKSET. They are problematic and Never last. Stay away. Cheap, poorly made, no longevity. I have two Kwiksets and BOTH have deteriorated in less than 5 years! Really Give me a break. I have other door knobs and latches in the house that are 25 years old and remain perfect. KWIKSET is an example of shoddy work, poor construction and corporate ability to force you to purchase their products over, and OVER and over. NEVER BUY KWIKSET.
I tried the credit card but it wouldn’t work. The house has shifted and the latch is jammed upwards into the frame. I’m going to try placing a thin metal piece inside (at an angle) and try hitting it downward with a hammer. May not work but it’s worth a try. I’m trying anything possible before resorting to investing in a Sawzall or paying a locksmith.
Dude, look to your right... It was way easier to just pull 3 pins open door, watch your feet, remove broke latch put pins back, assemble new latch and handle, but good vid and info on latch!!
Sometimes pulling the pins won't work. I have a door where pulling the pins won't work. The hinges interfere and stop the door from opening from the other side until it is opened slightly. To be specific, the part of the hinge that holds the hinge pin is wide enough that it interferes with the door. I looked at this door, it seemed to have the same sort of hinges. I have seen doors with hinges that don't interfere so that you can pull the hinge pins and open the door from the other side, but this is not it.
It just happened to me at 1AM I have a flight at 7Am for business trip and the home buyer is coming for an inspection 2days later I called the locksmith He said he could come at 4AM So I watched this video and fixed it myself. Thank you for saving my money and time👍👍

That only works if the latch isn’t seized. In this case the latch was seized and would not extend or retract.
Been working at this same problem for an hour with a pick set and flat head screwdrivers, no luck
Always better watching these videos after it's fixed. I just beat the latch with a steak knife and it came apart
Tip: rather than using a screw driver, take a wire (I used. The wire on a lawn flag) bend it into a “J” and string it around the latch piece between the door and the door jamb, and then pull. The wire will pull the latch back into the door and it will opened like a charm. 😊
Many thanks for this tip, it helped me open the stuck main entryway door today..Joe
This J-wire solution worked perfectly. It was much quicker (one minute of jigging) than the time it took the locksmith.
That only works if the latch moves in and out of the door. In this case, the latch was seized and would not move.
@@locksmithofgilbert6260 Evidently, mine is seized.
I have no idea what he is doing since the camera is everywhere but on what is broken. Nice paint on the wall
Thank you. I was lost on how to get my latch to let go. Now I can get to my kitty litter and scoops. :)
I couldn’t see the very things I needed to see. Half of it is off camera, especially about the new part. Now, gotta look for a video that will help me.
Made me dizzy and this is the exact problem I have. I can’t find another video that deals with this.

It would be nice to see what you’re actually doing and using. Instead of just half of the lock.
You have to unscrew the two screws to remove the door knob before you can remove the latch
What if the latch is stucked
Your video saved me a headache, bud. I was the hero daddy of the house, lol. Thanks!!!
Thanks! Opened my door in 2 minutes after watching.
I used a hacksaw blade and thin flat head screwdriver between the door and the frame, to jimmy it open. I felt like I was breaking into my own house. It worked like a champ, got right in.
I wish you’d made a video.

Bro I’m feeling your pain at this very moment going through same situation
If the whole door knob (plus the latch assembly) is broken from the latch, can I still try to open the jammed door with tools
Mine is seized up… thinking about taking the hinge pins out and sliding the door open from the opposite side
Everything makes it seem that the person who made this video is more interested in being noticed that he knows how to fix it, but not in teaching you how to do it, since his video does not show anything about the part that is going to change, rather only his toolbox.
15 minutes looking at this guy's tool bag. Camera never focused on actual repair
I started watching us thinking they actually might know what they’re doing
Tks so much..sorted my issue with yr help
What’s the point of replacing the latch ? Can you provide more explanation
I've had a Kwikset and a Defiant latch freeze up on me. The only way I could deal with it was to take an oscillating tool with a carbide blade and cut the tip off of it.
Had the same problem luckily i had a hammer and hinges that had the pins in, knocked the hinge pins out and took the door off
your gopro needs adjusting - couldn't see what you were doing for most of the video
no explanation and you didn’t keep the camera on what you were doing, but thanks for trying so my door is still stuck and I don’t know what to do

The customer had taken the knobs off…this was a seized bolt issue not a simple hardware change but thanks
What if you're on the itget side of the door. And the plates aren't available?
Camera angles a bit wayward but good fix.
This helped me , see I needed two or three hands 😂
DOOR STUCK!. DOOR STUCK
Never used to be a common issue until they started making cheap locks.
Holy cow what did you do?

cool story bro. in this case the latch was seized...the credit card method wouldn't work in this situation

Only way to fix it is take it off the hinges!
So If I cut the latch in half, it would come off? same situation here
Door would have been open in seconds if you use a sawzall to cut thru the bolt.
A locksmith spends nine minutes getting the door open. What does that mean for me?
We can spend 5 minutes to open lol
@@Texas_Cei did it on 2
I've been wrestling with my stuck door for 20 minutes, and haven't gotten it open yet.
You bust the door open with your foot like I did
Some doors are easier than others. I’ve done this job in 30 seconds and it is also taken me 20 minutes.
Is someone working out behind you man that breathing boy oh boy just asking

You explained nothing and had the camera not facing your work for the rest. Oh well I’ll look for another video
Thank you! We used a screwdriver.
What the name of the hook tool he is using?
An owl pick. Harbor freight
I wanted to see how to fix the problem not just replace it x.x ecery video i watch its "replace" and never "fix"
Why isn't he wearing a shirt?
Rookie.
This is horrible. We can’t see the products you show and nothing to help
Just bend an old gift card and slip it down between the door and the door jam, it’s quick and easy
good info thx.
I used a credit card from the outside of the door to get it open work smarter not harder 🙃 😅
That would work if the latch mechanism wasn’t broken. In this case that would not work
There is a deadlocked latch behind this lock's latch bolt, it's fancy secure feature, if it properly installed, to avoid loiding attack.
Omg! Thanks. This worked in a matter of seconds!!!

why not show us what the replacement part looks like and the name so we can order or buy it at store
It’s called a kwikset latch. Go to the store and figure it out. Very simple. Get the exterior one. Not interior
Try watching the whole video. The replacement part is named and shown in its package.

Which three pins please? I’m in the same situation at this very moment. Help.
The pins holding the door on the frame. Should be able to pull the door off at an angle
That's what I had to do last night. So much easier!
Thanks!! I have a hall closet door stuck closed. Figured I could just pull the pins but wasn't sure so I decided to check YT first!
Sometimes pulling the pins won't work. I have a door where pulling the pins won't work. The hinges interfere and stop the door from opening from the other side until it is opened slightly.
