I realized the main reason I adored this movie as a child because like Max- I would dissociate and make up scenarios in my head while it's happening.

A dark theory I had of this movie when I was a kid is that he dies in the end. When the tornado came through he hid under the desk, was accidentally left there and got seriously injured. Most of the movie is his mind making up a fantastical adventure while he's in a coma and in the end he dies and he goes into heaven which is why everything suddenly works out in the end a little too perfectly.

You're not alone, Jude, I also didn't realize it was a Minus symbol until I watched this video for the first time a couple of years ago. I always assumed it was a name tag that said "Minus" on it that I couldn't read because of awkward lighting, and I never bothered to look closer to see if I could read it. This video made me feel so stupid, but luckily I'm not the only one.
