The main purpose of the coup was to stop the government of Shagari from handing over to Ekwueme as they have agreed that after Shagari's 2nd term, Ekwueme will be sponsored to be the next president in order to heal all wounds of the civil war and to move the nation forward. People like Buhari, late Gen. Muhammed Shuwa, Gen. T.Y Danjuma and some of the principal actors of the civil war from North was angry that it is too soon to allow Igbos to rule the country. Then, there are some of the Yoruba supporters like MKO Abiola that was ready to finance the coup. On 31st December 1983...the same day I was celebrating my 16 years birthday, Jihadist Buhari overthrow the government...that singular act is the reason Nigerians are suffering till today just because they sworn to punish the Igbos.
but buhari kept using igbo people as his running mates from 2003 to 2011 elections, so everything u typed here is just beer parlor talk. also, it wasnt even buhari that led the coup that toppled the government, it was actually IBB, which is why it was easy for him to topple buhari 2 years later
