- For the past two years at Agribition, the Knights of Valour have performed a jousting tournament to the delight of the crowd. This isn't just a show, however, this is real jousting (and I thought trying on the armor was cool!)

These medieval sports are underrated... I'd rather pay tickets to watch this than a ball being kicked around.
A ball being kicked around doesn't take much, you just need a ball, a flat field and a handful of stones to mark the gates. That way many people can play it, and therefore relate to. Soccer is a people's game unlike Jousting.
Just as it always was. In 13-17 century England an emptied pig bladder was used to make a ball that boys and sometimes men had fun kicking around in a sport similar to soccer.

live near an Amish community and you have plenty of work, same if you are near a horse farm, custom shoes are always saught after, along with repaired/repairing shoes.

I love the idea of how jousting came about as a sport.
"Hey William? You know how we ride really hard at an enemy with our lances and then completely demolish them with the force of the blow? What if we did that against eachother for fun?"

In real life in middle ages they hit those exact points so not to severely injure your opponent. That showed at the time what chivalrious gentleman they are!
It started out as just another training tool to keep Knights prepared for the next war. Later it evolved into tournaments.
jousting appeared in medieval france. At that time , knights would show their value on the battlfield , but in time of peace when ther was no battle jousting was used to show your value as a knight. And jousting wasn't only two men fighting each other, it was a serie of diffrent games but a sa comment says it evovled in a sport

This is just one of the leisure activities they would do to spend the time when not at war, another favorite is hunting... surprise surprise, both involve violence.

Medieval tournaments weren't just about Jousting (even when it was the main event). There was also sword duels, archery, horse racing and other minor fighting contests... It was also a chance for smiths to offer their craft and services, and for trovadours to make some name of themselves with songs and poetry. We must bring all that's back, making it massive once again.

Visit a european medieval fair, you will see a lot of the things you mentioned.
I love how something that was a sport hundreds of years ago is still practiced today with such little alteration in the sport.

Cédric Derwael no they’re not. It’s called training my friend. But if it ever does go mainstream they will have to update the armor. The liability issues due to the high probability of injury are enormous.

Yeah is not like it would be 20 times more expensive.
I will say there is a worry at least among armored combat that guys who do that on the weekends or fight in the sport casually might get ousted out of the sport entirely by “professional fighters”. I’m not sure about this sport if it’s the same but from what I’ve heard a lot do this just for fun 🤷♂️

Jousting and hunting was like modern day military exercise, they keep the shape of medieval nobles. There was no sport back then - they trained for war, this was the role of the nobles. War and politics.

German Gothic armor looks much better
Also you can buy (not very expensive) larp armor elements in Epic Armoury for example, i have almost full armor, its mix of steel plates, chainmail and leather, iits more like fantasy armor than typical historical because they look better in my opinion
In early Qing dynasty we Chinese army wore padded armour (a type of composite armour looked like your Brigandine or Gambeson) which was made of cotton, boiled leather and a few iron plates, fixing by some brass rivets. However, it was not good enough to protect soldiers from attacks, the only improvement was that soldiers could keep warm in north part of China during the winter. On the contrary, after centuries of exploration, you guys mastered advanced metallurgical techniques and finally forged the masterpiece-the plate armour. I must admit you guys are wonderful, no wonder you guys rise from the Dark Age.

As far as the Qing dynasty goes, whatever armor they had were rapidly being outclassed by the development of firearms. Plate armor was largely being phased out since they more or less were ineffective and a burden. At the time, the breastplate was the primary armor piece that was of any value and given a few more decades, armor was more or less abandoned. The plate armor was developed early on and it was an effective means of keeping knights protected for most of the medieval period, but it was an affectation that was only afforded to those with means. If you were a serf... you take what you could get. It did afford a host of advantages to the knight as it made them effectively iron man in fights against the average soldier, but they were not universal.
You could have made it much further much quicker than us if you just ditched your race/countries collectivism and emperialist mentality. China's and most of asias history is just a long line of emperor's oppressing the people.
I mean ffs you guys got rid of one supreme leader "the emperor" and then replaced him with Mao it's pretty funny.

@@mrmagicfingers Poor knight is a very common thing. In feudal system firstborn child would inherit everything his father have, but what if noble has 10 sons? Even second in line would inherit next to no wealth and last ones were poor as dirt. They still has all the rights coming with nobility status but had to earn their wealth somehow. Most would end up scholars or serving in king's army or simply wandering the land in search of opportunity. In holy roman empire there were so many impoverished nobles some would resort to robbing travelers on the high roads as i.e. rogue knights.

@@TheDennys21 We are talking about inhereting titles and immovable property not just money. Nobleman would have long list of titles such as Duke of This and Duke of that, count of Here and There, baron of a Castlename and the moor. If said titles were split between the heirs it would break one strong realm into couple of weaker separated entities which would make things complicated for everyone including their suzerain. Not to mention all heirs would have de-jure rights on their brothers lands and are able to wage wars on eachother which they would totally do if they are in a positions of +-equeal power and it was kinda of reoccuring theme during early medieval european history before patrilineal primogeniture become videly spread.

+Chester “Snapdragon” McFistcuffs Probably less so than jousting in its original context. Nowadays, modern medicine prevents a lot of the injuries involved from being fatal, and the lances are probably designed to be more safe in modern jousting.
but at the same time, we've been breeding horse for far longer now than we had back then, so they're also jousting on stronger, faster horses, which is going to make for a much more powerful impact.
Raptormann0205 I disagree, medieval horses were bred to be beasts of war, strong and able to charge effectively, while the oned we use today for jousting usually come from breeds created for other purposes.
The only problem is that we want smaller, faster, lighter horses now. We don't need the draft horse anymore.

onsidering a hit from these poles is consistent with a pretty bad head on collision on the road... yeah the wind does get knocked out of you for sure.
Really they are, the force of the strike and the weight of the armour theres a good pause of just immobiliy trying to recover from the joust

@@lastor9148 I'm sure even a lower grade metal like brass or bronze would withstand a well forged modern day katana slash.
It would bite in, and technically "penetrate" but it wouldn't harm the wearer, and the katana would likely get stuck, so you are now disarmed.
The force needed to cut through would likely be enough to shatter the wielders own arm or wrist, also if you could generate that kind of force it would be better to end them rightly with a pummel or just a thrown rock, or even just swing a mace, and a thrust/pierce attack would be better than a slash

the helmet shouldn't be allowed to come off, that isn't proper jousting armour. Historically the helmets were fixed to the breast plate so that you couldn't move your head. This prevented the helmet from falling off and it also helped to prevent neck injuries as it limited the range of motion.
You remembered right, with regards to the King killed in the joust. Henry, King of France, was killed when a lance broke across his helmet, casting a splinter through his eye and into his brain. He died of the injuries after several weeks, I think. The man that killed him was the head of his guard, name of Montgomery, who, though he beseeched execution for his action, was pardoned by Henry, who said he had acquitted himself well in the tourney.

Here's a primary source mentioning competitors being 'unhelmed', which seems to imply that, at least at one point, helmets were actually not fixed to the plate.

At least they're not using sallets and bevors, as I've seen people do in the past. It is annoying that they aren't using proper frogmouths though.

Soccer is 80 minutes of running around and horrible passing, 5 minutes of diving and rolling around and 5 minutes worth of goal scoring if you're very lucky.

I think the reasoning behind that is mostly for safety. They would rather not have their "knights" be impaled during every show, so they make safer designs of armour, and use lances that don't have the capability of stabbing someone.
Maximvs Victa - I love your idea. Just so you know Shane and company also go around to schools/outings explaining history, not just about jousting. I have a degree in history and would love to bring it alive and let people know it is exciting, not the boring stuff taught in so many schools.

You can be 100% certain the actual riders use padding underneath, otherwise they'd regularly end up in the hospital.

Most of the historical jousting armor is a half armor the legs is protected by the horse armor
Ignoring that the armor itself looks terrible, it's not tailored to their bodies, it looks loose and gross, your helmet should never fall off during a joust.
