What you are hearing is definitely a sample. Either partially mixed with the original snare sound or on its own. It's way too consistent to be pure mic on the rim shots.

I listened to the down beat podcast with them on it. Their guitarist writes everything including drums, sends it to Zev and he will add or change parts that he would play which is what I did recording my bands album. Middy drums really help finding those fills that suit. Hence why Zev is so crisp
Gotta say, Zev is one of my favorite metal drummers in the game rn. Everything he plays is not too much, not too little, and executed so cleanly it almost sounds quantized. Mad respect 👊
