    "The sexual members, like the rest of the body, would've obeyed the will."
    Did... did Augustine HAVE a body? pretty much none of it obeys the will. Did he think having a beating heart was sinful?

    • @alexh1524
      @alexh1524 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If we assume that certain sexual activity such as incest, marriage infidelity, pedophilia, amongst others, is sinful or wicked, then he was referring to the fact that sexual urges tend to overpower the will. Involuntary movements controlled by the cerebellum do not operate at a higher level of brain reasoning that is associated with conscious decisions to do good or evil.

      If a married man has a vasectomy is it a sin if he has sex?

    • @kdmdlo
      @kdmdlo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hermenutic Well, there is one sin for certain and one possible sin. The certain sin is that of the vasectomy, which takes all of the responsibility out of the sexual act. In so doing, he objectifies himself and his partner. The "possible sin" depends one one thing: with whom is he having sexual relations? Is it his wife? Then no problem. Is it an act outside of marriage ... then it's a problem.

    • @noreenalbright2245

      @@hermenutic You are not supposed to be "altering yourself" but, he may know himself well (being irresponsible and lustful all at the same time, which is several sins ;). In the natural way of us being, a vasectomy doesn't happen and it does open him up to lots of partners, a green light for being a whore, etc. harlot male version. lol Anyhow, he most likely won't be that selective and could spread disease or perhaps he did several times by now. I think God wanted sex to be pleasurable between a man and woman. It does drive us and it is pleasurable. In the bible, they talk about lusting for others wives (commandment), or sleeping with others wives, or divorcing one's wive because of Selfishness. I think selfishness drives a lot of sin. Is this man selfish? What is his intent? to sleep with others without getting them pregnant? or just to be with his wife but not have children? God's Plan is always different than ours. Still, he was the creator and if he made you willing and able to have children, you have gone the selfish route (but want some control over the extent of your mess ups). lol That seems what it could be.

    St Augustine was not a persecutor- fascists and dictators who deny people their human rights are persecutors. St Augustine like all the saints and the Catholic Church uphold and explain the truth, and defend it from untruths that contradict it. It is necessary and a joy to share the truth and by expressing, creating, we reveal and develop our understanding which St Thomas Aquinas said is one of the reasons why we live- do gain understanding. And it was St Augustine who first understood 'the fall', the consequences of which we experience in this world. These wounds of original sin explain why the world is imperfect and why there is evil in the world. It was not God's original plan, and that original plan is being realised, although in conflict with the anti-christ's plans which will ultimately fail. St Augustine is one of the greatest thinkers and teachers the world has known.

    Not a sequential account of Augustine, leaving out his early years as a Manichaeist, then turning Christian, and finally returning to Manichaeist, Gnostic, and Stoic ideas in refutation of his Christian beliefs. His vehement argument against the more biblically correct and milder Pelagius and Augustine's strange conclusions about sin based on an argument on infant baptism has damaged and split the church to this day. It's no wonder the Orthodox church rejects him, too bad the Western church didn't follow suit.

      Stefan Fouche nope because truth exists on its own and God has remained it however Satan has tried to unite the pagan beliefs with the true Word of God and therefore division must happen in order for truth to distinguish its self from false belief. We can’t compromise truth and that’s where Augustine comes I guess.

      You know it's interesting as when Adam and Eve ate the fruit they cover themselves with fig leaves. A lot of scholars believe the fruit they ate of the tree of Good and Evil was the fig tree, cuz they covered themselves quickly, and then when you study the tree that Jesus cursed it was a fig tree. And a parable Jesus tells us learn the parable of the fig tree for the end times. Its very interesting ...
      I'm starting to study "the tree". On a spiritual level. How would happen in Exodus they looked upon the serpent on the tree and where saved. then we believe Upon Jesus on a tree we can be saved. Jesus said my father's The Gardener and I'am the vine and whoever eats of this tree shall be saved.

      Sean Stark alright, you’ve provided an actual quote from one of Russell’s writings. I agree that that’s more relevant than someone’s opinion of him. Although I don’t know much about Russell, I do know that some of his early writings on race (like the passage you quoted above on how socialism would affect different races of the world) reflected poorly on him, and deservedly so. I’m not going to defend those or any other writings composed during an era of widespread bigoted and pseudoscientific thinking, but I will say that Russell’s views on race changed considerably (for the better).
      And please keep in mind, my original reply was simply an attempt to clarify what I perceived to be a misunderstanding, on your part, of a point that Russell was making about the difference between Ancient Greek and biblical accounts of creation. I’d be more than happy to stop discussing the character or Russell or LaRouche, as I’m not interested in having a debate.

    • @r0osboz1

      The old English word for fruit is "apple", i.e., it used to be a generic word for any fruit. The word fruit came from French after the invasion and may French words came into English usage. So, in that sense, as an old English word, "apple" just meant "fruit".
      I should add, I am a firm believer that the "fruit" in Genesis is symbolic, after all, it says "fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil," which I think makes it self-evident that it's not a literal fruit.
