How would YOU rank these amazing games??? Let me know; my takes are certainly controversial enough as it is.
And be sure to subscribe and check out my Chapter Ranking and Stop-Motion Hooktail boss fight. :)
Also, my apologies if I went too harsh on Super Paper Mario or any other game. I trieeed to dial it back a bit this time, and I actually really do love SPM. But it's a ranking video, I gotta give criticism where it's warranted. I felt bad about my Sammer Slander, so I made it the setting for the thumbnail. 😂

As a Super Paper Mario fan, I’d never fault someone for putting it under Origami King. It really is a matter of highs and lows, and it’s incredibly hard to argue that Origami King has far more consistency. While OK’s story and characters aren’t nearly as good as SPM, it doesn’t have any of those abysmal lows in the actual game design.

I've also thought the same thing about Paper Mario 64's art style and sprites. They give the characters so much more personality to them, ESPECIALLY Mario. Although PM64 lacks extensive partner dialogue like in TTYD, Mario himself is more expressive which makes up for it. For example, he has animations just for eating and drinking foods! TTYD Mario often comes off as borderline uncanny valley with his lack of animation, which is compounded since his partners do all of the talking and exposition for him.

  • @benox50

It might sound like a detail but one thing the OG TTYD made that I really liked, was when you start a chapter, there was a moment of silence before finally showing the area name and starting the muisc at the same time. Like in chapter 5, there is that moment of intro silence where Mario is looking at the sea, to then finally show the area name, start the music and give control all at the same time which was really great for starting the chapter.

    1. TTYD Switch (10/10)
    2. TTYD GCN (9.5/10)
    3. SPM (8/10)
    4. Paper Mario 64 (8/10)
    5. Origami King (7/10)
    6. Color Splash (6/10)
    7. Sticker Star (5/10)
TTYD is by far my favorite game in the franchise, as it has everything you could want from a Paper Mario game: solid turn-based RPG gameplay, a zany cast of followers and NPCs, a compelling story, and a solid visual style with just a hint of the paper aesthetic. And, the Switch TTYD remake is absolutely the definitive version of the game to play, with its handful of QOL changes and its greatly enhanced music and graphics.
SPM for the Wii was a fun game. Its turning away from the established RPG mechanics definitely knocks it down a few points, and I also am not a fan of its visual style / character design. However, its 3D gameplay is creative, and it earns a few points back for having a compelling narrative, placing it just above PM64 for me.
Paper Mario 64 is the baseline for the series. It is a fun game with decent RPG mechanics. Although the visuals are outdated and the story is quite basic, it is still very fun and I enjoy the storybook aesthetic.
Origami King did a lot of things right, almost making it a return-to-form for the series (for example with its expansive overworld). The visuals are very gorgeous, and its use of the papercraft aesthetic was creative. However, the battle mechanics simply were not fun at all, the bosses took the papercraft aesthetic too far, and its lack of zany characters was very disappointing.
Color Splash and Sticker Star are certainly the low points in the series. The battle system is shallow, and the characters and storytelling were uninteresting. That said, the games are not altogether awful or unplayable (they're not 0/10 games). Color Splash wins out over Sticker Star for having improved visuals, and the painting mechanic made it just that much more interesting.

...yes that does mean your section on SPM was kind of painful to watch but at least I kinda saw it coming with how much prefacing you did. Personally I'm all in on the story and character aspect of Paper Mario so how ambitious those are plays the biggest role in my ranking over anything else (with uncensored Vivian... and i guess also the quality of life updates and HD visuals being the qualifier for the TTYD remake). SPM's story is just that fantastic to me, and I also don't understand the complaints about the art style, to me the use of shapes was less "lazy Flash-looking slop" and more "abstract stylistic flair to suit its setting of a far off unfamiliar dimension" with the less interesting NPC designs just being because they weren't as important, so they had no need to convey anything but "general locals of this world which has an abstract geometric style"
The gameplay complaints I do get, but at the same time I'm so used to them it's just like "eh whatever" plus they really are, from my perspective, something I'd rather have x100 over the frustrating leash placed on the story and characters with every game after it, including TOK. For all the things TOK does do better than SPM, I just can't bring myself to care about those more than what it was not allowed to do, which in many places you can see where they wanted to do more but were restrained by rules and limitations. Those limitations, since their introduction, have been THE singular thing that pisses me off the most about newer games, and I genuinely hope the TTYD remake marks the permanent end of them. As for 64, it's a great game and it does do a lot better than TTYD but it comes down to the story and characters again, I think each sequel improved that aspect by making it more ambitious and less safe, until Sticker Star set us back x1000. 64 is easily my favorite take on the classic Mario story, but I just like that later entries told new stories that expanded beyond the status quo. I will say I agree that 64 (and even Origami King) have better level design (layout wise) than TTYD, and 64 and TTYD have better gameplay than SPM, but I'm just that biased towards the story and character side of things.

I was honestly surprised at the switch between SPM and Origami but I understand. The points were pretty valid but it just goes to show that everybody has a preference on what they like in an RPG barring that nostalgia doesn't play too much into it. Objectively speaking Origami takes the W for level design but IMO the storyline and unique characters in SPM just brought so much more to the table for me as I didn't really like any of the bosses in origami king as they felt uninspired or unique at all. Especially after the first boss you pretty much get the gist that every boss is gonna be like it with its thematic gimmick. And I know that sometimes it's not about the conclusion but the journey but there's nothing sweeter than a boss that fits a theme and a buildup but origami king using regular desk tools is just too lame for me. Especially when you have wonderful examples from paper mario N64 and TTYD which have original bosses that are so unique and memorable. Both TTYD and PM64 are memorable for me as I grew up playing both on their native consoles beating both several times over so honestly with the remake being so wonderful in ways that I liked more than the original I'm praying we don't just get the remake for PM64 but we also get the true RPG sequel in the series that rival both of the first paper mario's. Will we ever see it? I will pray for it that's for sure. Complete the true paper mario RPG trilogy Nintendo!

TTYD improves on most things from 64, such as the combat system, badges, partners, dialogue, bonus content such as pit of 100 trials, and unique levels such as Glitz Pit and the Excess Express. 64 does have better level design, but overall, TTYD’s strengths outweigh 64’s. 64 is still a masterpiece.
I enjoyed Super, but it didn’t feel like a Paper Mario game to me. The Story is amazing, and most of the levels are fun, but I really missed the combat system, as well as the partners from the first two games. I still had a fun time with it.
I really wanted to love Origami King. I found the combat to be quite tedious and meaningless expect for the bosses. The world and music are beautiful, but the gameplay is kinda mediocre. Besides Olly and Olivia, everything felt generic. I thought it was just fine, not good or great.
Sticker Star felt like a chore to beat.

    2. TTYD GC
    3. TOK
    4. 64
    5. SPM
    6. Color Splash
    7. Sticker Star
As someone who played the OG and the remake, the text speed is really the only true downside as I see it. The menus don't feel slow to me at all but that may because those who really memorize every movement and placement are really the only ones who might notice a slight difference. The game is overtly polished otherwise, a lot of love and care that the series had been missing for a very long time.
Also yes, I personally put TOK over 64 which may be blasphemy but I overall enjoyed my playthrough of TOK. It felt like an epic adventure the whole way through and Olivia was a great character throughout. At times, 64 felt like a slog and the partners, while awesome as they are, just... aren't well used or developed on. Aside the chapter they're introduced, the partners don't get many chances to shine unlike in TTYD- I kept Goombella out almost all the time because of her amazing SASS). The battles are better than TOK but as an overall adventure and experience, sadly TOK won me over way more.

    7. Sticker Star
    6. Color Splash
    5. Super Paper Mario
    4. Origami King
    3. TTYD
    2. TTYD Remake
    1. PM64
To me without a question the remake is superior, it all depends on what you value but the amount of new boss songs we got makes it not close for me, together with the better visuals, improved backtracking and all the additional polish like so many new poses for the partners and NPC's, I don't see myself going back to the original anytime soon.
For the rest I basically agree with everything you've said here, I especially didn't expect our Origami King and Super Paper Mario ranking to line up like this. And yeah, PM64 is very close to TTYD, but it's still my favorite. Besides the fact that I'm an enemy modder for that game, I just have so many special memories specifically to that game that I can't really see any Paper Mario game beating it anytime soon.
Overall, I'm happy my personal list lines up this well with someone else's for once

If it helps, I got through the first minute of the video, saw the comment from you apologizing for being harsh on Super Paper Mario, and hey that's alright. I'm not gonna judge you if it is (or one of) your least favorite of the Paper Mario series! It's where it kinda fell for a lot of people. This comment's just putting my thoughts out.
SPM was my first of the Paper Mario games I played, and while I'd have for sure ranked it above Sticker Star and Color Splash just for its story and memorable cast, it's...still very flawed. The platforming gameplay just doesn't match up well with Paper Mario, even though the 3D mechanic is quite enjoyable. Way more enjoyable than the trial and error/one-time use for basic actions in SS and CS by far though.
...Honestly I'd have put it over TOK as well because the timer-based gameplay in TOK turns me into a nervous wreck. And that's pretty much the only reason 😂

Honestly! I fully respect SPM being where it is. In fact, I am really, really happy to see Origami King actually getting some love for once. It undoubtedly has some real strengths which are often ignored, and I think it really does stand up as a great game... even if I really do wish it were allowed to have its full potential as opposed to still being held back in a few areas :)
This is coming from another childhood SPM player btw. Love the game to bits but, yeah ya gotta admit sometimes that its seriously the story hard carrying that game. - Have the option to use "FAST TEXT" , something that it DRAGS a lot on the remake
      - Give you the option to SKIP , so if you replay its more smooth
      - HAVE A HARD MODE , something that everyone were asking
      - To be honest , the TTYD remake is "the Paper mario game" to play if you have never played TYYD but I could go back and replay the original anytime I want because on how fast , responsive and snappy it is.

In fact, they almost make me want to consider the latter the more superior game. Also, I respect your points on both the original and remake of the Thousand Year Door. Even if I am willing to admit the remake has more advantages over the original, I think the original is smoother to play. No amount of cut backtracking would change my mind on this opinion. As for your preference for the original game, I can live with it! In fact, should I ever reengage with creating Paper Mario animations, I may have to take more cues on how the characters are animated in that game instead of the Thousand Year Door.

You and your community are breaking my heart for disrespecting one of the greatest games, called Super Paper Mario.
In fact, a lot of people admit that SPM is just a forgotten underdog.
I partly understand your criticism. I would agree that the pixels don't really have a good character design, and the graphics are a bit unic (not bad, just unic and good in their own way).
But despite all of that, we got an awesome story (I would consider it the best Nintendo story of all time) and really enjoyable gameplay. I played SPM multiple times, and I will do it again.
Games like Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King are not even close at being enjoyable to be played again.

@@Jay_Jay_Guy tbh I completely disagree with your statement. Super yes did abandon the good things that were from the older paper Mario games, but your critiques come from the differences between this game and his predecessor. I can agree on the character designs to not be the best but honestly with such a great story it's forgiving. Also the pixels are really underrated. Yes they aren't as interesting as per say TTYD's partners but at least they are useful and each have their own use in gameplay... Origami King's partners... Cough cough... And also you are trying to judge the game not for what it is but for what it isn't... You talk about missed potential in the game but tbh as for the game it is trying to be I didn't find actually any missed potential... It's not actually meant to be an RPG, yes it has some elements for it... But is it really an RPG? No. It's unique from the rest of the franchise and it's fine like this

It’s so good to know that I’m not the only one that doesn’t like the level design in Super Paper Mario. Story and characters are great, but actually playing the game was kind of unbearable sometimes.

I guess as a casual player who loved TTYD growing up but hasn’t played it in a few years due to the inconvenience of setting up my GameCube or Wii (also never got into emulations, again very casual) the remake scratches the itch and I don’t remember the original enough to nitpick what’s missing but enjoy the QoL improvements overall. However recently playing 64 with Nintendo online I can say they’re different enough to warrant playing both from time to time. Battle system improvements aside I love the first two games about equally at this moment.

I think the TTYD remake is definitely better than the original, especially due to the huge upgrade the soundtrack received. That being said, I still wish it did a little more. The two new bosses are okay, but I wish there were more. Super Mario RPG had boss rematches, so why couldn't TTYD do something similar?
Also I wish they changed the badge availability, like making every badge available to buy in either the badge shop or casino. And if that sounds too good, they could have unlocked that in the post game.

2:06 I actually think that sticker star could have been great if…
    -It had partners
    -A level up system
    -Normal paper Mario chapters
    -Normal attacking
-Maybe a power up system like using fire flowers, ice flowers and maybe tanooki suits on certain platforms instead of the curses
    -New puzzle aspects
    -More character depth
-more character diversity (not just toads)
    -more story.
Okay I think you get what I’m saying. Besides like every important point a paper Mario offers it was good😂
But now for real, I feel like sticker star is not a bad game. But it’s a bad paper Mario game.
Color Splash… I just didn’t want to buy it after sticker star. The let’s plays weren’t really mine either.
Super paper Mario has a great story and it was incredible playing it for the first time which makes it besides the battle and level system a good paper Mario. Sadly the partner system wasn’t good either. But characters and story were really nice.
Origami King, does many things right. Better story again, better world in my opinion, lots of fun but the battle system was kind of weird for me. It was fun at the beginning but especially when replaying I just feel like battling is a chore instead of fun. The confetti system is cool though. And I think that the boss battles look really weird. Anyways, it made massive steps into the right direction.
Paper Mario 64 is really nice. I love it. It was great the big chapters with funny and cool characters, some cool puzzle aspects that still don’t feel like a chore even after all these years. Cool bosses, great level system, great battle system, great story, lots of diversity, and I like collecting and starting to remember more and more of the collectibles in the game by heart.
    And now…
Ttyd. Literally all of the above but put a 10x better on top.
Even better story okay. Best story in the entire series. Best fighting system, best partners (okay Bow is like my favourite partner of all time and I wish we had a boo or a ghost like Luigi had as a partner but yeah, can’t be perfect right?), incredible chapters especially the sixth(?) (train) and chapter 3. okay I personally think chapter 2 is kind of tedious but hey. It’s still a good chapter just not my cup of tea. But the world of TTYD is just connected it feels like a real world it’s not just „yeah I exist and I’ve never seen anything than the 3 metres beside me and maybe another NPC“ it feels like basically everyone has a story everyone knows many people and knows lots of things about the world. It just feels like an actual world that they put thought into and tried to make it feel alive.
Ttyd switch: Yeah it has gotten easier, yeah items are really common now, but there is so much going for it that I think that it is an upgrade from the GameCube version. Is it the best game in the series? Yes. Just yes. Is it my favourite Mario singleplayer game? Heck yeah. Is it my favourite Mario game over all? That’s rough. I love 3D World, love Sunshine and I think it’s rough to rank them properly but I feel like TTYD is just the best overall game. Only problem I have is… I’ve seen the post chapter scenes so often by now… that I just don’t like playing them anymore. They just feel like autoscrollers don’t have collectibles which makes sense as you couldn’t get the things anymore or in peach’s case just before beating the game which could be really frustrating if good badges are hidden there.
But let’s be honest, the new pipes that fix backtracking. Holy it’s incredible. As well as Vivian officially being a biological boy now, it’s just incredible.
Ttyd switch is the OP unbeatable tutorial boss. Literally😂

It's funny, because I'm and "old head" with Mario RPGs and Super Paper Mario made me so sad playing it the first time.
I get what they were going for, and why they did it, but I hated it for being so different from what I loved with the first two.
It's definitely not as bad as my initial feelings, but I will never like it as much as the first two.

Honestly my ranking of the games I have played since I haven’t played color splash or sticker star is very similar. 4. Is super. 3. Is origami is I do love the battle system, but thought the partners is really lacking. I might attack and if I attack I might do damage. But both is random. 2. Is 64. 1. By slight margin is ttyd

I'd say you should definitely try out the romhack Paper Mario TTYD 64~!
It adds the battle system of TTYD into PM64 and adds so many other QoL changes that I'd say it fills the hole of a Paper Mario 64 remake and genuinely elevates it to another level. Granted, it does have a few bugs, but the amount of options that you're given more than makes up for it.

For me I think color splash is worse than sticker star. It’s the only Mario game I just stopped playing and never picked up again due to boredom. It doubles down on the failed experiment sticker star was, and makes issues the prior game had even worse. Replica stickers are stupid because it forces you to replay levels to get things stickers you already got. The card menu is worse overall and much slower. And painting cards is pointless when you go to the first roshambo house and grind out infinite money. That and the koopalings as bosses were neat on paper but by then were so overused by Nintendo they felt like a waste of creative space, at least a goomba king or a dancing glooper blooper felt more creative than the same guys with the same themes as usual. But both games are probably some of the worst Nintendo games I’ve ever played. Funny writing can’t fix an awful gameplay experience

Thank goodness I'm not the only one that doesn't like Super Paper Mario. Like you, I use to think that was the best Paper Mario game. Mainly because it was my introduction to the Paper Mario franchise and I thought everything about the game was amazing. But after playing the previous 2 Paper Mario games that I missed out on and even playing the modern Paper Mario games, I started to like Super alot lesser than I ever did. Now I agree the story is the best thing about the game and it holds up tremendously well. The music is great & the characters are wonderful. But when it comes to the chapters, levels & other parts of the gameplay, they haven't age well at all. Also I prefer Paper Mario staying on an Turned-based RPG style rather than being an Action RPG cause it doesn't match up well for the series. The scary part is that there's still some people out there that fanboyish over this game and they don't understand why some of us didn't like it & calling us the TTYD fanboys even when they never played it or was late to the party. I know it's all different taste of an opinion. But that subjective just rubs me the wrong way. I wanted to love Super like I use too. But I can't. I like 64, TTYD and even Origami King more than Super.

SPM is a genuine chore to play for so much of the game, especially in chapters 4, 5, 6, and the greater parts of 2 and of 7. The story is great but it fails at being *fun*, which is the most important thing for a game. I'd even think about putting it below Color Splash, though I could it, SPM, and TOK in any order, all above SS and below 64/TTYD.
Otherwise, I think PM64 is, on balance, superior to TTYD. The latter game fleshes out its partners more and has a much more developed story, but 64 has much better level design and (subjective for both of these) a better artstyle (the watercolor and Yoshi's Island influence) and soundtrack. And while TTYD has a more polished battle system, superguards are too powerful and the audience/stage effects can get annoying.
