I read the privacy policy and it looks onerous. They can move your data to any legal jurisdiction in the world (do US laws apply to your data?). They get to keep all metadata and other information about your contents. They can keep your stuff even if you delete your account (for their internal processes, whatever that is and/or may become). They can share your information with any third party they want to. I assume that means sell your information if they want to. All-in-all, very concerning to me. Anyone else find these issues to be a concern? What about instances where you put information that identifies your clients in your metadata? Could that be construed as giving away your clients' personal data? I don't know these answers and there may be good/acceptable answers. Perhaps a company rep could answer...

So a commenter who "works on the team" posted in another comment but doesn't address this very valid post regarding their "policy"..
Anyhow, if its "free" then there is something fishy happening with the data stored.
      "Buyer" beware.

    • @fortepianomusique
      @fortepianomusique 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      I gave it a read.
"please note that we may transfer information, including personal information, to a country and jurisdiction that does not have the same data protection laws as your jurisdiction, and you consent to the transfer of information to the U.S. or any other country in which Company or its parent, subsidiaries, affiliates or service providers maintain facilities and the use and disclosure of information about you as described in this Privacy Policy"
This is to allow them to store your photos in the cloud. The servers of cloud services are spread around the world, and you don't get to choose which hard drive in which server in which country your data goes to, especially when it tries to serve that data to people you share your photos with who reside in a different location, or even to you, when you are in a different location other than your home jurisdiction (say on holiday).
"Metadata typically consists of how, when, where and by whom a piece of User Content was collected and how that content has been formatted. Users can add or may have added metadata added to their User Content associated with a photo, including names, geographical information, comments or other data. This metadata may be accessible to others if you share the User Content with others or on third party social media sites."
They have to or else you can't organize your photos at all. The organization all depends on metadata. It also allows you to download and share your photos to yourself and other people with basic metadata such as capture date and time. It is also already a common practice to strip any critical metadata before uploading to any service, if one wants to prevent the transfer of critical metadata.
"When you interact with our site through various third-party social media services, such as when you login, Like or share through Facebook, Flickr and others, we may receive information from the social network including your profile information, profile picture, gender, user name, user ID associated with your social media account, age range, language, country, friends list, and any other information you permit the social network to share with third parties."
This allows you to share to social media and other services from the app. The photos themselves are considered "personal information". Without this, the app cannot have a share function. Likewise, if you don't use the feature, this doesn't need to be invoked.
"With your permission, Mylio may access the contact list on your online account, PC or mobile device in order to share your User Content via email, text or through social media, or to invite your friends or contacts to connect with our Service. We may also collect information about others if you use our Service to upload, share and/or distribute User Content that contains information about others, such as their name, image and online contact information."
This is the same as with the social networking clause, but for emails, SMS, and other methods. This allows the app to share photos via more traditional networking methods, or even through social media via your phone or computer's built-in contact aggregator, for example, when you want to share by using a name, and your OS calls up the contacts app to let you select from phone numbers, emails, or their social networks that you have put in their contact cards.
"Other companies owned by or under common ownership as Mylio, which also includes our subsidiaries (i.e., any organization we own or control) or our ultimate holding company (i.e., any organization that owns or controls us) and any subsidiaries it owns. These companies will use your personal information in the same way as we can under this Policy;"
      Pretty self-explanatory.
"Third party vendors, consultants and other service providers that perform services on our behalf, in order to carry out their work for us, which may include cloud storage, billing, content or service fulfillment, or analytics services;"
Again, cloud servers and other services whose own systems operate on a global scale.
"Our business partners who offer a service to you jointly with us, for example, photography studios through which you may print your User Content;"
Pretty self-explanatory - you can't have a photo printed if you don't allow the photo itself to be transmitted.
"Third parties who we believe may offer you useful products or services;"
Here are your ads. But then if you're on here on TH-cam, and probably via Google Chrome, they already have more data on you being sent out to advertisers than Mylio will. typically, these are anonymized, as Google already does with your personal data.
"Any third party at your request. For example, you may have the option to share your User Content with your friends through email, SMS text, or various social media sites;"
With your consent, allowing Mylio to act on your behalf, again with the share functionality. Can't share photos if you don't allow Mylio access to your photos.
"The public at your request. If you participate in any user forum or interactive area of our website or Service, your information will be shared with other users and may be viewable by public search engines;"
      Same as above.
"Other parties in connection with any company transaction, such as a merger, sale of company assets or shares, reorganization, financing, change of control or acquisition of all or a portion of our business by another company or third party or in the event of bankruptcy, liquidation or related or similar proceedings; "
Pretty self-explanatory; you don't want your data to just disappear immediately because a service changes management.
"Third parties as required to (i) satisfy any applicable law, regulation, subpoena/court order, legal process or other government request, (ii) enforce our Terms of Use Agreement, including the investigation of potential violations thereof, (iii) investigate and defend ourselves against any third party claims or allegations, (iv) protect against harm to the rights, property or safety of Mylio, its users or the public as required or permitted by law and (v) detect, prevent or otherwise address criminal (including fraud or stalking), security or technical issues."
Allows the government, US, EU, and others, when things need to be investigated.
"Following termination or deactivation of your account, Mylio may retain information (including User Content) for a commercially reasonable time for backup, archival, and/or audit purposes."
Another typical point of contention for people. Based on this wording, this is because servers will always have redundant copies of everything in their storage. That's how servers work, and you never run a server with files that have only one copy of a file. Hard drives die all the time, and servers can't work if they're losing data all the time just because drives die. Likewise, that means when you delete files from a server, such as when you terminate your account, not all instances of your data suddenly disappear as well. Servers have backups too. This allows a service like Mylio to not be immediately in violation of your privacy by no fault of their own. "Reasonable time" typically means the scheduled deletion of backups and archives, and audit refers to data that may need to be retained for the said audit otherwise Mylio or any company undergoing an audit may be charged with fraud for suspicious absence of data. In other words, this is legalese for preventing you from suing them for having copies of your data in following standard data and corporate practices (audits, backups, etc.) It's not there so they can peep at your addresses and photos and/or sell it to advertisers - that's already covered by another clause.
TL;DR, I wouldn't be afraid of this Privacy Policy if you're here on TH-cam, probably on a Google Chrome browser. You're giving away much more private data just being here, or even just taking a photo with your commercially available Android or Apple phone, than when using Mylio.

Man, Picasa was doing all of this (and so fast!) so well almost 20 years ago. I wish Google never killed it. I still use it as my main catalog managing hundreds of thousands of images while the software hasn't been updated in almost a decade.

Picasa 3 works perfectly fine in 2024. Very fast finds all photos on the computer. Great for local work no need for cloud but you can upload everything to the cloud too nothing stopping you on that front either.
Why doe it matter if its supported as long as it works in 2024 like it did in 2015? When was the last time you called google for tech support on anything?

    • @David-ym2od
      @David-ym2od 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@Physics072 I don't think anyone said anything about support, but "supported" in software usually means consistent updates and not "technical support". My version of Picasa 3 has issues with exporting edited images in Win11, it has some facial recognition but it's not as good as others, it doesn't have object recognition, web upload doesn't work anymore, it's missing a lot of things that some other modern applications have. And it would be nice if Google still supported it so they would implement new features and maintain compatibility with newer OSes.

I steer clear of subscription apps whenever possible. Let me buy a version to use forever and keep innovating to encourage me to shell out for an upgrade.
Two quick questions: 1. Is Mylio selling any of the AI obtained data? Training AI using so many photos would be extremely profitable for them. 2. If we decide to stop using the software, (maybe they up the price or stop offering a free version) can you write all of your extensive additions such as ratings and tags to exif data in a sidecar file? Does Lightroom see these?

    • @j.c.figueroa6249
      @j.c.figueroa6249 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Because our product is both software, and a service, the subscription model is a better fit. You're getting more than just the software and constant upgrades to it, but also the service providing shared albums, synchronization between devices and more. There is a free version of the app that doesn't include those services, but still has all the cataloguing, indexing and search functionality.
Any and all AI and image analysis for your photo library happen exclusively on your devices - your photos not uploaded to Mylio servers to do this work. And all the resulting data is also kept on your devices. Ratings, tags, face tags, and most other metadata associated with your photos is written to sidecar XMP files by default and those sidecars again are saved to your devices - you have full access to them whether you're using the app or not and whether you're subscribed to the service or not. Whenever possible, we use IPTC and other industry standards to dictate where the metadata gets written on the sidecar files. Any app that adheres to the same standards should be able to read them.

The addition of fast search and filtering, finding photos visually with different views, automatic tagging of people and things, and synchronization of your library to all your devices is all built on top of that folder structure. And if you don't need synchronization and only want to access your library on one device, then the app is free.

    • @j.c.figueroa6249

Every device gets the entire library. You decide what quality version of the photos each device gets. So devices with sufficient storage can consolidate all your original files, while storage limited devices get proxies of the images that don't require a lot of space. Anything you do on one device is synchronized with all the others, regardless of what quality image it contains.

      Hi
If you like to do hierarchical keywords we have room for growth. It’s in development for next year.
But the AI Smart Tags are hierachical and can be promoted to actual keywords.
We recently expanded a bunch of metadata fields as well as full compliance with new family history standards.
Mylio is very easy to face tag and geocode photos with too.
So yeah…. The current manual keywording is basic. But I’ve already designed the replacement for it. And its in development.

And regarding geocoding, it must be able to withhold geopositioning, while I myself will need that there are species which need protecting by withholding that except for exchanges within the scientific community.

@@richharrington9627ofcourse, first of all sorry for the late response! I didn't receive a notification
Let me elaborate, i'm working a windows machine, and while importing all my pictures it was eating up my memory to the point I wasn't able to use the computer untill i closed the app, was not able to cancel the import to split up the folder imports or do anything else in the app.
The drag and drop function doesn't work if you want to keep the files at their current location, which makes it more of a hassle to add the folders one by one (due to the entire hdd import to eat up the memory)
I do notice when i use the app that 'it hangs' and need to wait, would also love to see a last import feature, as once its imported its hard to see the newly imported folder
Second the filtering works only on the pictures which is fine, but if i want to go to the folder where the image is located i'm not able to do or find that. I also want to filter on multiple categorie like for examples where there are mountains and animals instead of mountains OR animals
Or open the file in explorer lets say by an easy mouse click
That said i love the idea of the app, but it seems on my pc (a fairly new pc) its hanging or slowing down my pc
