This was amazing! The behind the scenes of this video is hilarious! The guys picking outfits is too funny! I hope you finish the "days of our lives" documentary.
This is a cover from the 1955s version, originally sang by the platters, but I love Freddie's version better because it fits him better. And those three girls are Freddie, Roger and Freddie's friend Peter Straker
This song was a Platters remake but Freddie felt it really summed him up. He always said in interviews that he was so different from the Freddie Mercury on stage. He lived his whole life, I think, sort of pretending in one way or another. He was in a time where he couldn't openly be himself so he felt he had to be someone different then himself in many situations. On stage he was larger then life Freddie Mercury and at home in private he was he was free fun loving Freddie Mercury and in public he was quiet and shy Freddie Mercury. He said once that some days he woke up and thought to himself, "I really wish i wasn't Freddie Mercury today" so i think he was sometimes sort of trapped in his stage persona that he created. He was a beautiful person full of love and care for people and sometimes that got over shadowed by what people expected of him, some of them using him and even being abusive to him. That part makes me really sad that he had relationships that had abuse in them. His Personal Assistant, Peter Freestone outlines some of this in his book. Freddie trusted him and he lived with Freddie for the last twelve years of his life and did many things for Freddie, including being a bodyguard at times. While this song is up beat and catchy, i find it a little sad in that he felt He was the Great Pretender when all he wanted to be was himself and have people accept him and love him for himself. He told David Wigg in an interview that he was riddled with scars from failed relationships and hurts from the past that he found it hard to really open up to people like he really wanted to do but he had to protect himself. I Know he found some happiness with Jim in the end but even that relationship had its problems but that story is for another day. Anyway, I love your reactions and how genuine and respectful and loving you are and Yes, the blond back up singer is non other then our beloved Rogerina. LOL.
This is a cover of the Platters. It’s amazing how this song fits Freddie so well. The blond is Rogerina 😂. Great reaction Faith. Thanks for request Sue 🤗
Yep, that was actually Roger in drag! It’s not like the movie where they were all mad at him for going solo - it would be kind of hard for Roger to be in particular, as he went solo before Freddie and Brian did later as well. Remember that a lot of things in the movie were just blatantly incorrect and inaccurate. In an old interview, they were asked if they’d go solo and Freddie said he’d call the other band members to sing backup (and he did!) He and Roger had a ton of fun here, and there’s some great behind the scenes footage. This video was really hard to make, as they had to recreate all of Queen’s old classic sets!
And no, he wasn’t poking fun at all. He was referencing all of the many roles he’s “played on stage” as it were as a Pretender - a showman - when really he was much shyer and reserved when he wasn’t performing. He loved performing, but he was also saying he was good at “Being what I’m not”, which was his ultra-confident persona. It could be a lot for him - there’s a quote of his where he said sometimes he woke up wishing he weren’t Freddie Mercury that day. He heard this song, originally recorded in the 50s, and it deeply resonated with him so he made his own version. It was very well-received!
@@laurenraubaugh9542 Spot on observations, Lauren! :-) I met him once before the band became famous, and despite his unusual appearance (he already had the black nails - unheard of then - and some eye makeup IIRC, just on a normal work day at his job at the Kensington Market) he was very normal, humble and quietly-spoken, with an interesting combination of what seemed like genuine, quiet confidence and self-belief and and a certain vulnerability/insecurity - he told me he had issues at the time with a mountain of debt/bills he had to somehow meet - thus the 'normal' job in addition to his and Roger's not very lucrative stall, and that whole trying-to-become-a-rock star job.... :-) I have wondered if the FM persona and changing presentation, which could well be seen as a series of disguises, weren't in part at least a way to overcome some basic shyness and insecurity, centred around his (socially and for a while legally) unacceptable sexuality, and also his looks - the teeth were an ever present issue, and did affect the way people viewed him, initially/to some extent.. until he achieved the fame/ legendary status he worked so hard to achieve, when it all - the campness and the unusual looks - became a part of his much-loved 'trademark' style.. Social acceptance, no more money worries, and major public vindication of his underlying self-belief achieved! I find the lyrics of The Golden Boy very interesting too, for the amazingly frank admissions borne it would seem out of an increasing self-awareness and need for truth-telling as he faced the possibility of death in the not-too-distant future.
Apparently there was nothing Rogerina wouldn't do! He seemed to have a huge sense of humor! The whole video for "I Want To Break Free" was his idea too!
Real intricate video. Love how many scenes are recreated from the videos of Queen & other Freddie Songs. I will have to sit down & count them one day. Yes backing singers are Freddie, Roger & Peter Straker. I was due to see Peter on Stage in London in March but everything got shut down the week before 🙁
The blonde one actually IS Roger 😂 I adore this video. So nostalgic. And they had so much fun making it ❤❤❤ I think he had just found out about his diagnosis here and I'm sure this was a nice distraction. This was some years after he did his solo album. It's a cover by The Platters, btw, it's not his song.
I love this song...they had so much fun making this.. yes Faith that IS Roger as one of the backing singers. He was in the Blonde wig. The song is originally from the Platters...thank you Sue for the request.. Thank you Faith..and sorry for your sad news.. much luv. Stay safe. ❤
There is nothing I can add to the terrific comments already made. Perfect song for Freddie and the guys were fantastic with him! You should watch the version about the making of this video, as suggested, it's very funny! Perfect choice Sue, thanks! Sorry I missed the live chat!
He wanted to record this song, because he said all the character he played in videos and how he was on stage, he was pretending...he is the Great Pretender.
🌟"The Great Pretender"... Honestly, I don't know from where to start...🤔 The song as well as the video, hurts me so much and makes me cry every time I watch it...🥺💔 Maybe because I know the story behind it... Freddie was, ultimately, a pretender on stage. Some of the videos show various characters he portrays. In his stage antics, he can be anyone he wants to be--a peacock strutting, twirling, running around, lying down, and using the half-mic as another appendage! His early outfits--spandex onesies, accordian-pleated "wings," the white silk or satin outfit with fins on the long sleeves and ankles, and later, his biker look, then the military jackets in various colors--all helped him become the superstar that he was. How about the metal crown and velvet/ermine-trimmed cape, which he wore at the end of certain concerts?! The King of Queen!
!st of all, what happened in the movie showing Freddie leaving the band NEVER happened. I believe that Roger had already released his first solo album and was working on his second plus Brian had released "The Road Warrior Mad Max 2" album before Freddie began working on his solo albums. Queen never broke up but the did all agree to take a break. They were tired of the constant treadmill of recording an album and then touring. They admitted that they fought a lot while recording albums (they were 4 strong personalities who liked different types of music). They finally realized they needed a long vacation from recording and touring and agreed to take a break. The break ended up being about 2 years but they had kept in touch with each other during that period. When they finally got back into the studio they were excited and recharged. They felt that same old rush they felt to create and perform as they did in the early days. The break had allowed them to refresh their creative juices. They wrote and recorded the album "The Works" after their break and had gone on tour to promote it before Live Aid (this explains why you saw a fan holding a sign the said "Queen Works" in the audience at Live Aid.). They gave the album the name "The Works" because they threw in a little bit of every type of their style onto the album. BTW - how they became part of Live Aid is a different story. Geldorf did ask them to part of Live Aid while they were all attending a banquet but he was planning it to happen in about 8 weeks. They said they would think about it but honestly, Queen didn't believe that he could get it together and make a success in that length of time, Besides they were about to leave on tour so they sort of just ignore it. Then Bob Geldorf became more insistent and kept asking them. Freddie was actually the most hesitant of the group. He worried that Live Aid was catering to a different demographic than what their typical audience was and he worried that they might bomb but Geldorl wouldn't let it go. He finally persuaded Freddie to agree. According to those backstage during Live Aid, the members of Queen were the most nervous of any of the entertainers before the show. They were squabbling among themselves and sniping at the people around them. All the tickets to Live Aid had been sold before Queen announced and they were afraid that the audience wouldn't like them. This was not a Queen audience. Well, if the Live Aid audience was not filled with Queen fans before the show, they definitely were fans after. Queen album sales soared after Live Aid with a whole new age group being introduced to Queen.

Freddie Mercury the performer was very different to Freddie Mercury the man, Freddie the man was a very quiet and shy person whom his friends adored, Freddie the performer was a God of a performer whom Freddie had to pretend to be, he took this song on to show this. The song was going to feature on a Freddie Mercury covers album which ended up making way for the "Barcelona"album. You have heard Roger singing, try Peter Strakers " Heart be still", a gospel song or " Ragtime piano Joe". Peter has an amazing voice.
Heart Be Still is such a beautiful song. I love it & listen to it frequently. I even bought Peter's 3-disc box set that came out very recently. His original albums are out of print but were remastered for this set.

Nope. Wrong about being wrong. (Sort of. It wasn’t Brian, but was Roger). They were THAT supportive of each other’s solo work. Freddie also sang back up on Roger’s work outside the group. Oh yes, I'm the great pretender (woo-woo)

I seem to be what I'm not (you see)
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around
Yeah! Ooh-ooh!
Too real when I feel
What my heart can't conceal, oh
Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown (woo-woo)
I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're
Pretending that you're still around
