This song was originally done by The Platters. Freddie Mercury remade it as one of his solo projects. Freddie was the redhead and Roger was the blond. The brunette was Freddie's friend Peter Straker. Freddie was indeed the Great Pretender. He had to hide so much of himself during his life and portray other personas. Freddie himself always said he was very different off stage then his persona portrayed on stage. This song was made for Freddie Mercury to sing. He did a lot of really good solo projects. He did a solo album called Mr. Bad Guy and an entire album with Montseratte Caballe, where he actually wrote all the songs and sang Freddie Mercury style Opera. Freddie was commissioned to write a theme song for the 1992 summer Olympics that was being held in Barcelona that year. The idea was to collaborate with Montseratte Caballe, who is from Barcelona. After singing together, she wanted to record more with him. She was his idol, He thought she had the greatest voice in the world and couldn't believe she wanted to collaborate with him at all, much less an entire album. That album is fabulous. Great reaction! This was Freddie's solo project. He was planning on doing an album full of cover songs, this song really does fit him well. The original song is from The Platters. But along the way, before the album could be realized, he met up with Montserrat Caballe. Instead of doing the album full of covers he created a classical crossover album. If you think this vocal performance was great then you have to see music from Freddie's Barcelona album. The album really showcased his vocal abilities. The whole album is a masterpiece, that combines more classical music into a contemporary sound. Freddie was the first artist who really combined classical music and pop. Yes, the vocals are outstanding in this song. On Freddie's solo opera album from 1987 with opera diva Montserrat Caballé, you can hear more overwhelming voices. I'd suggest my most favourite song from this album "How can I go on" as a start. It’s a cover of an older song.....I have never seen it before, but because he chose to do this song, and the fact that there were clips of the older video, I would guess that Queen decided to do this as a response to the VERY NEGATIVE reaction to the cross-dressing video of I Want to Break Free. The 3rd backing singer is Peter Straker who sting sings & appears in musicals. Was due to go & see him on stage in London end of March but lockdown got in the way. Check out Peter's Heart Be Still where Freddie is on backing vocals.

Great reaction! This was Freddie's solo project. He was planning on doing an album full of cover songs, this song really does fit him well. The original song is from The Platters. But along the way, before the album could be realized, he met up with Montserrat Caballe. Instead of doing the album full of covers he created a classical crossover album. If you think this vocal performance was great then you have to see music from Freddie's Barcelona album. The album really showcased his vocal abilities. The whole album is a masterpiece, that combines more classical music into a contemporary sound. Freddie was the first artist who really combined classical music and pop. On Freddie's solo opera album from 1987 with opera diva Montserrat Caballé, you can hear more overwhelming voices.

It’s a cover of an older song.....I have never seen it before, but because he chose to do this song, and the fact that there were clips of the older video, I would guess that Queen decided to do this as a response to the VERY NEGATIVE reaction to the cross-dressing video of I Want to Break Free. America can be very puritanical...and back in the early eighties, there was shock in the US when that video was released.
