Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This memorable video, Directed by David Mallet, accompanied Freddie Mercury's seventh solo single. This is a cover version originally recorded by The Platters in the 1960s. The two 'lady' backing vocalists are none other than Freddie's good friends Peter Straker and a certain Mr Roger Taylor, from a band called Queen. The single was released in the UK on 23 February 1987.

This man kept his illness private and never once looked for any sympathy. He did this video while being in a lot of pain and on top of that he never shared his diagnosis with the media, because he didn't want it to overshadow the band's music. The music was all he cared about. He wanted to touch his fans and share his gift and this is what we need to celebrate about his life.

So true. And knowing now what we know about AIDS you can definitely tell he is right at the initial stages of it where the Steroids add size to the face. The fact that, according to Roger, he would go into the studio in his later years, record three takes of lyrics, and tell the guys to use the best one is a true testament that it was much more important for him to churn out as much music as possible vs having anyone have concern about his illness. He has and will continue to stand the test of time. He is always going to be the standard.

This is so haunting. At the time it must have seemed to the public that this video was all about Freddie's ego, but in hindsight it was him dealing with his own mortality and celebrating all he'd accomplished. I heard in an interview that he covered this song because it spoke to his role as a 'pretender', meaning the stage personas he created. But, it seems to have another meaning too, that he was struggling with his awareness of his illness and hiding it. "Pretending that I'm doing well." This video makes me feel like he was trying to find ways to say goodbye to all of us. He stayed so positive til the end.

Freddie and I were born around the same time. In 1955, when R&R and doo wop were in their infancies, I can imagine Freddie becoming aware of 'The Great Pretender' by the Platters. However, I cannot imagine him foreseeing how he would give new meaning to the lyrics years later. Each are magnificent in their own way and in their own times.
I rank Freddie and Queen with Elvis in my lifetime with music.

I'm a huge queen fan. I haven't watched that anime, but accidentally watched the ending song video of the anime (it looks like another "cat" version of this MV but more？). In the ending song, those cats are not random cats, they are all Freddie's cats. The one running from behind the curtain is Delilah (the protagonist), and the three other cats are Goliath (he has exactly the same red collar), Tiffany and Oscar. And, I think the ending song independently tells a story between Mary and Freddie, the short-haired woman who opened the door and picked up Delilah is like the silhouette of Mary Austin. And Delilah turned into a human form the moment he was picked up (the human form looks like Freddie in the 70s ! ), and the location is Garden Lodge (the brick wall and the door are exactly the same shape as Garden Lodge). And the last scene is morning, and Delilah is curled up next to Mary who is sleeping. Maybe the story means that Freddie's soul is stored in Delilah? Can only be transformed into a human form briefly when meeting Mary? idk, interesting story, tho. The author should be a fan of Freddie.
Okay this is amazing. I love Queen and I love the anime but I had no idea about this. Can't believe they actually took all that info to make the ending, it's just stunning. In Freddie, we were graced with the greatest frontman in the history of rock and roll. A totally, inimitable, uncomparable and unique talent, that we will never again see the likes of.
Just like Hendrix, Sinatra, Joplin, Bowie, Prince and Simone, there can never be another!
When Freddie and other great artists were made, the mould was thrown away.
From the UK Freddie, we love you, still miss you terribly and will never tire of listening to that fucking unbelievable voice of yours.

Да, музыка великолепная и хочется, закрыв глаза, слушать. Да, закрыв глаза, т.к. эти его шоу с "голубыми" нарядами и с таким же стилем показа, вызывают недоумение и брезгливость. Если ты МУЖЧИНА -- будь им на 100% и визуально, и в поведении, без этих "сомнительных", скабрёзных намёков. Но аудио -- изумительно и неповторимо, как Вы точно сказали: "просто супер".

I knew that. Wasn't sure what you meant by "cover". In my opinion, he did a better job than the Platters and I also love them.
@@nyles66 finding it better or not is subjective. a cover means that the person covering the song is not the person the song writer had in mind when they wrote the song.
A good example is every recorded version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in d minor is a cover as Bach initially wrote it so he him self could play it.
You also have different versions of a cover.
you have a 1 to 1 cover of a song. using the exact same instruments and all to get as close to the original as possible.
you have covers were like in this song the musicians use different instruments and (counting Freddie's voice as a instrument)
you also have covers where musicians add parts to the song .
then you have musicians that will use part of a song and/or melody and make a new song on top of it.
to the extreme of using a song in such a way that it becomes it's own thing all together. where you could even question if it's still a cover or has become it's own thing.
