I agree totally with AfroPoli below. Many others try but this is it. He has everything and i doubt whether Barbirolli would have have recorded with him otherwise; the Niun mi tema is like from another world. Too bad Verdi didnt have a chance to hear him. My friend Solon Alberti played for him on a number of occasions and was in awe of the power and beauty of Zanellis singing. Fifty years later he still raved about him and what a tragedy it was that he died so young
Fantastic. Totally secure technically, and such a range of colours in his voice. Heroic and sensitive. He makes the current crop of tenors sound puny...............................the difference between Men and Boys!

Excelente voz para este personaje, con una muy buena interpretación, leí en algún lado que era un barítono que cantaba de tenor, pero a mi humilde entender es un tenor spinto dramático con una voz especial para los personajes verdianos. Un Otello genial!!

Poco conosciuto come tenore e ancora meno come baritono,Zanelli lo considero un grande cantante al pari di altri suoi colleghi dell'epoca,diventati più famosi grazie ai dischi.Straordinario timbro scuro,possente vocalità drammatica sapientemente e tecnicamente piegata ad esigenze più liriche e una stupefacente attualità nello stile e nel gusto interpretativo.Lo conoscevo solo per due arie da tenore.Grazie a questo video ed a altri,che mi hanno permesso di conoscerlo meglio, anche da baritino
@zarmona790 Empezó su carrera como barítono. Fué un gran barítono, ojalá puedan escuchar sus grabaciones en esa cuerda!!! El asunto era que era la época de Amato, Ruffo, Stracciari!! Además, su hermano, Carlo Morelli, empezaba su carrera como barítono, que llegó a ser famosísimo. Todo esto, y su extensísima tesitura y alcance lo animó a estudiar papeles de tenor dramático y ya Uds. pueden oir el resultado.
if Zanelli had lived he might have developed into the definitive OTELLO in his time). He was certainly on the right track. His unique & vivid full spinto (not as dramatic in timbre as some but this matters little for his suitability for the role, vocally, IMO), voice & developing dramatic stage portrayal were apparent to all who worked with him.
@@grouchomarx5609 true. Those are massive Otellos. In my opinion though (and critic of those times and of today seem to agree) del monaco is the most complete. I also love Martinelli's and Zenatello's.
