❤️ this! One thing said over and over by one of my fave artists is less competition, more community. I love that you said to be in competition with yourself, not others.

I started off doing jewelry/keepsake boxes. Then I branched out to tcg deck boxes, then tabletop rpg wares. Then someone asked me to do wood jewelry, and that got me into using resin with things. That brought more revenue in. I just got a lathe and that’s just opened up even more avenues for me. And when I see other’s works, I get inspired and in complete awe at the things people create. And you are right, having great customer service is pretty much 80% of it all. Reputation and word of mouth is a very powerful thing.

I am not the crater in the family. My wife and daughter are. So by proxy I attend lots of craft shows and hand crafted sales. Nothing makes me walk by faster then unorganized displays. Even at the end of a day a well organized display in the morning will look much better at the end of the day. Like you say if an item sells fill the spot. The other thing is when you see a crafter that makes most of their items but then you can see items looking hand made but this person did not make it. It is just there to sell at the low end to capture a sale. Don’t see this too often but when they are there it sure sticks out. Your hands show in your work. It’s clear when it’s someone else’s hands. Love the video thanks.

You said it wonderfully. I'm a beginning artist and this is exactly my mind set. I only started up again (used to make jewelry for gifts or donations at a hospital infusion center). I ran out of a lot of supplies. Now I'm investing a little (I get from disability) into myself each month to purchase new supplies and learning new styles of jewelry making. You are a blessing to me. I again love how you both work your business together

Yvonne, I first came across your TH-cam in 2020, the same year I began my handmade jewelry business. I wish I had found this video before I went through such a tough time mentally feeling as if I have not been as successful as I would like within this field.
But this is so much motivation. I quit my job 2 days ago, rented a 2-room shop space hours later and have found this video now. As I design Raynella's Jewelry Palace...I will keep this video near and dear to me.
I appreciate you sharing this. Thank you.

You are so right. I always tell people that there is room for everyone. I have many friends who make jewelry and we all bring our own different flair to it and also, many people buy from everyone, so people won't just go to one jewelry maker and not check out someone else. My friend and I both make pins and brooches, but even though we both buy supplies from the same places, she's more Steampunk and I'm gaudier and blingier than she is. Our styles are both different.

Yvonne- love this information and you are SO Right ON. I've been doing art shows since the 80's- I know I'm long in the tooth! But these people would come up to me and say: "It's so much jewelry here." I've heard that over and over. My response is "everyone has different taste and each booth has it's own style." I've always done really well because each piece is one of a kind and my prices are reasonable. Love your information- glad to see young people taking up the lifestyle of freedom and expression. xoxo

You're truly telling it like it is. I have a brick and mortar store. I outsell my partner who does beadstringing by about 75 percent. My customers want personal attention and they want to know the artist. I started with just clay but you can limit yourself like that. Now I do leather and some other mediums. Hair accessories are good too. Thanks for all your good info and please keep it up!

I agree with you on this Yvonne. You stand out from all the others because if the quality of your work and your syandatds. The market can be over saturated by mediocrity and they can get by. Then someone like you comes along and stands out. You make the new standard. People will sometimes strive to reach that same level and si.e want to pay for it. Bit, others can't and will accept and pay for the mediocre because they can't afford it get to your work.

As usual you are sweet and spot on! We only vend in our little community. The Farmers' Market and special events are our usual venues. I started out making making goat milk soap ( haha, told the girls they had to start paying for their hay), selling a few veggies and eggs. Not big money makers in a small town, but that was OK, it got me off the mountain side once a week and I would meet amazing people! One of them was a talented jewelry maker and, between her and you, I was inspired to try to create a business which my daughter could be part off to help raise her boys. She could have discouraged me, as competition, but instead she encouraged. I didn't know at the time that she was planning on getting out of the jewelry making, so she really surprise me when she offered to sell me some of her displays and supplies.
We have a couple other jewelry vendors at the market and events and we each have our own styles and we complement and share with each other. The newest has some of the most amazing, found item, jewelry!
How I do babble on, sorry about that. What I would like to add is that in this crazy, competitive, make money, world, sometimes a little bit of kindness can be done. Not to encourage sales, but to encourage creativity. We had three little girls visit our booth and they were fascinated with the wire wrapped keys. Grandma only had them there to visit the park and didn't have the funds for a purchase. I took the girls aside and gave them each their own blank key and told them to make them their own by decorating them how ever they wished. My payment for that was a big hug from Grandma. More than enough.
    Happy crafting and stay sweet!

Wow, how intuitive of you! As a long time consumer, you describe just how I feel when I buy a handcrafted item (from you or others). As a relatively new craftier and not sure what I am going to do with all the wire/clay/ beads. It is good to hear your genuine feelings about others who have taken the same or similar path as yours. You are a shinning star and a inspiration to me. I think I may even share some of my crafted items with you. Just remember when I do...I am still new. lol♥

I'm going to be attending the Etsy Made Local Christmas market here in Hobart, Tasmania in November. The stall allocations just came out and a quarter of the hundred or so stall holders are jewellery (including me!) The committee have done an amazing job making sure we're spread out through the venue and encouraging us to present ourselves as individually as possible to be successful. Living in a small city, you tend to come across the same people again and again, so anyone who hasn't learned to have a positive attitude to other artisans sees their success suffer as a result, as they don't get welcomed back to craft shows. Everything you mentioned; focussing on being yourself, diversifying within your niche while still holding true to your unique style, being customer service focussed, and just being nice to other folks that are swimming up the same stream as you is all true and valuable! I'm sharing this video with the Facebook group for the other stallholders and I just know it will get a lot of positive response! Keep being you, Von!

Thank you for the remarks about uniqueness and diversifying -- that was VERY encouraging for me, because I'd despaired over the idea that "the only way you can be successful (on Etsy) is to have a unique product that nobody else in the world makes" because not only did I not have that unique product, but even if I did, I knew it would be soul-destroying for me, because it would be utterly boring to stick to just one thing. There's a reason I called my Etsy shop "Essence of Eclectic" (www.etsy.com/shop/EssenceOfEclectic) -- it's because I keep on doing different things! My craft skills are already diverse, and I'm always learning new things. So, hey, I'm already ahead on the "be diverse" front, yay!
And I totally agree with "please don't be a jerk"; it doesn't do anybody any good, especially oneself! Not just in other people's eyes, but if you're "standing on the corpses of your enemies", you've poisoned your own heart.
I love love love the idea of "undermining the idea of an oversaturated market" -- let's all be rebels against the Dark Lords of Cold Commercialism!

Hi Vonn, I have to say thank you again. I am a jewelry artist,i have been contemplating opening up an etsy shop. I have a problem with the confidence thing, although family ,friends and strangers alike think that my stuff is beautiful its me that has this block. you are helping me through this. honestly i really think most of my lack of confidence comes from the epilepsy, and the medication i have to take to not have the seizures. It can be debilitating at times. working with metal to create beautiful pieces of jewelry is an escape for me. just sharing on a public forum is hard for me. most time i just sit back and read what every one else has written. i have how ever written on your sight a few times . you are a beautiful person and really make people feel at ease. Thank you for your advise.

This certainly put things into perspective for me... Especially the bit about encouraging other creators and featuring them, because I agree completely. There's room for everyone and the craft feels much better when we are for and not against each other.

I'm so glad you spoke on this becuase this was something that was on my mind, as a new seller. Also, I love your shirt. It reminds me of one I got from Agan Traders. So pretty :)

I am so happy I found your channel. All my life my mother told me that even though my eyes are young my soul is heavy by all the lives I have lived, and I see that in others with young eyes. Thank you for being a good soul and encouraging others to go down that road as well. I know ppl have said it so much but... Namaste my sister Namaste Indeed!

Again, You are great! I feel lucky to have found you! I have been making and learning to make my own polymer beads as well as making quick earrings from pre-made beads (your idea). I started learning polymer years ago, but would only play. Well, I've become better and better as time goes on and I feel I could start selling. However, I have fear of rejection about showing my work and I don't really know how to put it out there. I mean, like the actual steps to starting an Etsy store for example. Anyway, I again thank your for your advice and I love watching your videos!
