  • Here’s the scene that doubled my heart rate, and gave me chills reminding me of the good old days watching great movies for the first time, unbelievable.
This upload is to serve as exposure of this movie, and has no monetary or self growth intentions. I just love this movie and want people to see this scene in its best quality form. If I have to take it down I will not hesitate.

For someone new to seeing this, I recommend seeing the movie. The build up to this makes it so much better and desperate. Also, the following reaction in Jon Hamm's office. So many good moments.

The film, to be completely honest, is junk. And not because it was shot badly, a bad game, or bad special effects.. It's different here. There is no logic. The scenario is absolutely not logical. Well, judge for yourself - what is this Middle Eastern country littered with snow and with 5th generation fighters? Well, it is clear that we are talking about Russia. But Russia has possessed nuclear weapons since the time of Stalin, possesses advanced nuclear technologies, produces large quantities of nuclear weapons, and all related materials, and means of delivery, and what is all this event for? What other reactor, and what agreements does it violate? And yet - these anti-aircraft missiles that are shown there have been removed from service in Russia for forty years. In their place came others, dozens of times more perfect. It turns out that they spent money on fifth-generation fighters, but they did not have enough money to replace the ancient anti-aircraft missiles...

    • @scoopicman
      @scoopicman ปีที่แล้ว +63

@@user-fi2nv3ym2w Technically, Iran has F-14s, but the filmmakers didn't want to "name" any country. The snowy landscape purposely throws off viewers from making a realistic conclusion. I thought it was a good move. Nobody to hate here; just a cool mission in alternate reality fiction. One goal of this plot was to get Maverick back into an F-14, as seen in the original movie, hence this scenario.

Well this scene isn't realistic. You can't just pick a plane and fly. It needs to be serviced ready for a slot in the flying programme and outbriefed by the duty flying officer (ironically named as they have office duty for the day).
The only way he could have gotten a plane is by hijacking a scheduled sortie and that would have required violence or the consent of the pilot who's plane was readied. Mav was known to be a loner. No way was he authorised to fly that day and he likley could not have coerced someone to give him their slot, especially as it would require a courts Marshall offence.
      Great film, loved it ❤

Watch the scene sometime and pay attention to Hondo's reactions in it: there's a moment of surprise, a moment of awe, and then at the end resignation that he won't see his friend again. He thinks it's a suicide mission. and that Maverick isn't coming back from it. It's a great little performance, and the editing of the scene to perfectly splice in the reactions of the rookies at the right times for it.
Fun trivia: at the end credits, it thanks "The US Navy Blue Angels", which do fly F18s (and routinely get some passengers on them). I'm almost certain the Blue Angels were flying during the scenes where Maverick schools the rookies (precision passes like that are a routine part of their airshows) , but now I wonder if one of them wasn't doing this run too.

true, though i think he also knew that it was possible Maverick pulling an unauthorised stunt like that might simply ground him permanently; so multiple negative possibilities. also ties in neatly with Mav risking being grounded to save Hondo and the team's jobs at the start of the movie, vs this scene where he's risking being grounded just to make sure the young pilots got the original flight plan where they were more likely to survive. i think getting Hondo's reaction is to illustrate that he knows his friend so well: he knows how skilled Maverick is but also knows through experience how much he will sacrifice for others. ❤

@@nickzimmerman1447 navy planes take a lot of abuse with takeoff/landing, yeah. But while the USAF lets planes do 9G default, navy wants their F-18's to limit at 7G.
It's kind of an upkeep cost thing. Also, can be a bit safer... pilots might be able to handle 9G generally, but there's no guarantee they'll be at peak physical condition ALL the time.
A lot of people think that means the F-18 can't 9G, but that would be false ;) Frankly both planes can easily 12G or 15G, etc, but not for more than a moment if the pilot wants to stay conscious.
The AoA (angle of attack) limits on the F-18 mean it can squish the pilot if not reined in some. Carrier planes tend to have great AoA, so they can land/takeoff in such short distances. Sure there's catapult & arrestor hooks, but you gotta meet those halfway or they'd break. Anyway, AoA performance typically is the biggest factor in how badly a plane can squish it's pilot.
Until block-50 on the F-16, where it got the F110 engine (and better thrust to weight ratio), I'd have bet on an F-18 over an F-16 in a dogfight. But with the F110 engine in the F-16, it'd be really evenly matched. But that's not born out in most 'armchair' discussions or video games, etc.
For that matter, people greatly underestimate the turn rate of F-15's & F-14's too. Pretty much any US 4th gen can dish out as much G's as the pilot can withstand (and then some). Big really doesn't mean less nimble.

The first is good, but it’s just loaded with 80’s cheese. The “You Lost That Loving Feeling”. The “I feel the need. The need for speed”. The cringey volleyball with the oiled and flexing pilots. Watching it now is so cheesey. This new movie far surpasses the original.

@@Legend57. I know. I watched Cobra a few months back. I used to love that movie. Couldn’t believe how awful it was. “You’re a disease. I’m the cure”. I used to think that was so badass. Interestingly, Cobra and Too Gun came out same weekend. I saw Cobra on Friday and Top Gun on Saturday.
I’m 52. Lots of 80’s movies were great, though, and still hold up. But Top Gun did not age well.
      Iceman: “You’re dangerous, Maverick”
Maverick: “That’s right. I am!” With that steely eyed glare for emphasis.
And those arguments in the locker room with all the guys wearing tighty whitey’s? Whose idea was that? The same guy who thought up the oiled up beach volleyball game?
Ooh! Maverick is a tough guy!

I loved the subtlties. Cyclone wouldn't do 2:30 because he felt that while Maverick could do it, there were no Maverick's in that class, and the mission was pretty much guaranteed to fail. By Maverick doing 15 seconds faster, he showed Cyclone the best he could do, which showed they could be 15 seconds slower than that to complete the objective. And therefore showing Cyclone that none of them had to be Maverick level to complete the mission. And that he could have them ready.

This was the scene that made me misty-eyed. Love this movie so much. A true American classic in the modern age. They took Maverick and made him into a real character. His paternal instinct for these pilots was profound here; putting his career on the line to show that it CAN be done in a way that would give those young pilots a shot at staying alive, as opposed to treating them like disposable assets. It's brilliant. This whole movie was a work of Logos.

The narrative structure is so classic here: hero completes first major task, overcomes the non-believers, training for major boss is finished, and all focus comes in-line for third act. It must've been amazing to be in edit bay as this came together. That one bit of dialog at climax, the "Holy s**t!" part, how much you wanna bet that line spent weeks or even months before approval. Somebody probably put their job on the line over that bit.
