- In December 2022, the world of mixed martial arts was shaken by the sudden death of Victoria Lee, an 18-year-old rising star from a family of champions. The youngest of the Lee siblings, Victoria was on a path to follow in the footsteps of her brother, Christian Lee, and sister, Angela Lee, who both held world titles in ONE Championship. But behind the scenes, Victoria faced immense pressures, and her untimely death left her family and the MMA community devastated.
In this video, we explore Victoria’s promising career, the pressures of growing up in a family of champions, and how her tragic death has impacted her family-leading to Angela’s retirement and the launch of a mental health initiative in Victoria’s honor.

Hate to say it, but sure sounds like the parents wanted to build a legacy and the kids had to just go along with it. The fact that all the kids are pursuing the same career and two out of three not only had ideation, but made attempts is telling.
Literally exactly what hat is has to be, and this is sooo common, not just in sports but even when it comes to school parents drive their kids to high levels of stress to get the best grades, when I was in high school a student actually attempted in the school,
Yes unfortunately this is nothing new. this is a common problem with egotistical parents who want to live their life through their kids. Jackson family is a great example.

The phenomenon isn't limited to sports, but encompasses any career, any walk of life. My girlfriend's late brother faced similar situation, father worked in the military and wanted the same for his son… tragically he faced the same fate as Victoria Lee. Rest in peace to to both of them 🙏
“Martial Arts” sometimes fighters put to much emphasis in the “Martial” part of the term. But ignore the “Art”… to have balance you must respect both words and it’s meaning. In the old days Samurais took up other hobbies to find balance within themselves. Weather it was playing musical instruments, Gardening, Painting, carpentry or poetry. You must have to have an outlet of creativity to balance the destructive nature of “Martial”. Because being to “Martial” will eventually lead to your own destruction.

Beautiful.
This is why parents shouldn’t force their teenager into any path especially to the degree that it causes high stress, I seen it all throughout high school, even s*cide attempts in school, cause parents pressure their teenager to get the best grades creating insane level of stress that kills the mental health, it’s actually genuinely insane to do that to your child
True
No it could be something else. Usually sports isn't what parents want for their kids because it doesn't bring in money and would scold the kids to get a job. But the parents look rich enough to enjoy the sports and they do seem to like the sports. I can see there comes to a point where she is questioning herself, like I have done this much already and what is the point now. So she don't have goals anymore.

As a son who grew up under the love but also the expectations of a perfectionist father (and older brother), it wasn't easy to admit when it was too hard. Whether or not the Lee parents were so nice and supportive in private I don't know, but sometimes just the fact that your parents or siblings appear in your eyes as perfect or always successful in everything can put so much pressure on you to do the same, and it may not even be intentional on their part. This sounds so ridiculous now, but when I was a kid I wouldn't admit that I needed glasses, even when I couldn't see the chalkboard clearly at school because I was so ashamed to be the first one in my family to have bad eyes. One must wonder if Mr & Mrs Lee gave their kids confidence and trust to say, "I actually don't want to be a fighter. I've had some success and I can make some money, but I don't wanna do it." It's been some time now after Victoria's death and Angela admitting to her own attempt, I hope the parents have taken a look at themselves and reflected on how they raised their kids. I'm a father now and I wanna be careful what messages I send my daughter both directly and indirectly.
I am a son who grew up under similar circumstances. It is so powerful and brave of you to share your experiences. This is a generational issue within our Asian culture. It takes the kids who survived that (us) to now make the changes necessary in how we teach our children, how we love our children. I am a father to two sons now and that is the journey we are on. Learning how to unlearn how to parent from what we experienced is the challenge.
Respect to you sir. Must have been some “relief” letting this out.
I doubt it, since Christian has gone back into MMA and his younger brother is replacing Angela after her retirement.
Being a parent myself : I always tell my children- you don’t need to be a Champion , you don’t need to be a winner - just do your best - win or lose doesn’t matter. That’s life.
Assuming your not Asian
We are from the same place growing up in Hawaii. The parents are extremely competitive and pushy. I have seen it with my own eyes.
They killed her. It's obvious. When not one, but TWO of your children are so desperate that they try to kill themselves and one succeeds, then you know that the problem is within the family. There is a dark secret they are hiding behind this picture perfect act they are showing the world. It's all fake.
Her older sister is rebelling by retiring from MMA and so the younger brother steps up. I don't think that if you have four children that ALL four want to become professional fighters. My parents had six children. None of us went into their fields. Two are teachers, one works at a storage facility, one became a housewife after working as a computer programmer, one worked in corporate and I am a scientist.
This couple are forcing their children to live their dreams that they couldn't fulfil themselves.
16 years old and her first professional fight? What’s wrong with her fathers and the MMA authorities?

At 15 I ran away from home, lived in the streets for a year. Fought my way to survive. Im now living in my own apartment with a decent job. So here is the tip. Never live your life to meet the expectations of others. At the end of your time they wont be there to tell you that you did a great job. So live your life in your terms, bcoz its ur life not theirs. Remember people wants to expect a lot from others and yet they dont want others expecting anything from them.
your one of the lucky ones, most people who do that end up homeless and fail at life because they couldn't afford to upskill due to their circumstances. you dont have to pick the career your parents want, but if they are forcing you to learn math, music or sports, then you are the one benefiting from it even if you hate it. at the end of the day would you rather have the skills to be an engineer, athlete, musician and pick to work bricklaying or be forced to work bricklaying because you have no other skills?
How old are you
I lost my 24 year old daughter to suicide in 2022 as well. It's been incredibly difficult to cope with the guilt that I think every parent must feel, because our job is to protect our kids. It feels like I failed at my most important job. I protected her from everyone but herself. I was aware of her struggles as they had began in high school and I did everything in my power to help her. I have also struggled with depression most of my life and it does tend to be hereditary. I can relate to Victoria Lee in a sense. I was an academically gifted child who skipped grades in school as well as a talented athlete. The pressure you feel is intense. Even if your parents don't put pressure on you, you still feel it. There's an expectation that goes unsaid by everyone. And I crumbled under it. You're always supposed to be the best, and even when you put in all of the effort that's in you there's a feeling that if you don't end up on top that you have let everyone down. Sometimes even when you are on top you feel as if you didn't do enough. I'm incredibly grateful for athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka who have gone public with their struggles with mental health and have tried to educate others about things like the expected media interviews and other sports related things where they predict that so and so is expected to win this title or whatever. Doesn't matter if you're the greatest of all time and that you can easily outscore the competition, it's the expectation that is hard to overcome. Especially when your performance isn't quite up to par. We have to do better as a society in understanding the way that we celebrate people is also harming them.
God be with you❤
I’m a 70 year old man and I have never had someone’s passing on to the next life affect me the way this young lady has! I don’t know what it is but this family has a very special connection to everyone who connects with them, whether physically or mentally!

Mental illness can also be heredity. Some of us are born at a disadvantage when it comes to the ability to fight those invasive thoughts even without immense negative outside pressure.
Competing at that level is excruciating especially mentally. That's why a lot of elite level stars need sports psychologists. Peer pressure to the family and maybe the family suffered mental health like depression.
She could’ve done anything she wanted ! What you mean , what choices did she have ?? Her family pressured her into mma . She could’ve gone to pursue her dreams in things she actually enjoyed and wanted to do . What kind of questions is that ?! This poor girl felt she wouldn’t let her family down had she not kept up with the family “business” and assuming that’s what made her take her own life . She was under so much pressure from her family , and that’s freaking sad . I hope her family has to endure the pain every single day . They drove her to doing what she did .
@@nickalthouse1614 This poor girl felt she wouldn’t let her family down had she not kept up with the family “business” that does not make sense? What do u mean
@@nickalthouse1614I think this is a misunderstanding. "What choice did she have" refers to how she would feel in her situation due to the immense pressure of the situation and fear of potential backlash from her family. They aren't saying she was fated to do mma or that she couldn't/shouldn't have done anything else.
Let it be known that this could be a case of hereditary depression. Obviously the mma culture and pressure to succeed due to the family was really intense, but it is in fact possible that her parents were as supportive as they possibly could've been and she just liked to do mma of her own accord/put pressure on herself to do well in it. The attempts of the other siblings could be due to the parents forcing them into the field, or it could be the intense and competitive nature of mma exacerbating their already preexisting mental health issues. The only thing wr know for sure is that this is a family whose world has been rocked by an unprecedented tragedy. They deserve our full sympathy as we will never know for sure what happened behind the scenes.

It was great as well to have an Organization prioritizing Mental Health for Fighters, as Fight Prep alone is too taxing, and can be increased by losses on any fight.

@@raeraebadfingers a so called trophy wife is nothing like a trophy child. A trophy child has to work hard, while trophy wife is just a dependapotomous.
R.I.P Victoria. Miss you, Love from 🇸🇬
That’s suck… I blame it on the parents…
Her sweetness shows through in this video. The hurt to her family and her friends are obviously deep. We all realize there is no right but only that to go forward you take the knowledge you learned with you and make a better place. When it comes down to life, its core is love. Giving her sister all the strength and support to go forward to make this earth a better place. My love is with your family.
The parents are relentless fighters who made a grave mistake by involving all their children in the same sport: endless practice, constant pressure, and so on. I blame the parents.
They are Mercenary not Warriors a true Warrior doesn't force his childrens into this sad life.
Victorias passing was ment for all of us it effects us all and she in some ways will never die love you victoria for ever will be in my hart.and i will allways be a fan until i see you one day....
Let your children choose their own career, considering the damage MMa fighting does to your body and getting smashed to the brain time after time, what parent would put their child through this. Shame on the parents. RIP Victoria such a beautiful soul. You tried so hard just to keep your parents happy. Now in Gods care . 🙏🙏
Thats the pressure when you always want to be the best. It aint worth it.
She was 18 when she passed:( she was soo young. she didn't have a chance to enjoy her life. Let your children enjoy their life theirs already so much pressure in the world. She prob didn't want to disappoint her family and was exhausted fighting.
This is what happens when ones self worth is based upon external achievements rather than internally motivated.
Teach our children to be internally motivated.
Allow children to question, to critically think and encourage them to discover their true purpose for being here.
A life lived on one's true purpose is a life worth living.
Parents, don't attempt to live your second life, no matter how well intended, through your children.
Love unconditionally, always encourage, guide when needed, give space to grow....
@@kiwioffgrid2437nah, plenty of kids have pressures, it’s genetics.
the father pressured her too much let kids be kids
Asian parent pressure 🙄
Rest in peace. Was shocked to see her pass a few years ago.
I can't wait for his return. The Lee's are why I started watching, stumbled upon Angela fighting andci was hooked. I miss the Lee's
Remember a lesson learnt…
We’re only guardians to our young kids…
Once they grow up…
It’s their lives
Let them decide their destiny & fate
We no doubt are their parents
We don’t own them nor do we have the right to decide everything for them!
It’s their life journey
Let them walk to the end by themselves in the most happiest way they like
So parents…
When it’s time to let go…
Just let them go
Open your arms to welcome them back
if they are hurt or need to get back to the place they can feel safe & recover…
I remember her and the brother, rest in peace you are a flower 🌼 🌸 that God planted on Earth 🌎, and now you are in the lights where all Elements of creation come from.and in this light you are with the creator of everything that exists ❤. Aloha from volcano 🌋 Hawaii
In all honesty basically what you said was that God's plan for her was to live Guy off prior to giving receiving love in its entirety. at the same time excusing the fact that those closest to her did not pick up on the god-given signs she expressed herself. which was to live life to its fullest extent and Beyond by expressing physical Freedom each and every day all year long.In the way of martial arts at the same time years Prior to such in her Global public interviews and messages she Gently highlighted her age
& medical concerns In a manner that would not anger, upset, making those closest to her feel guilty for their lack of care to say the least. these points have been scientifically classified religiously verified. in layman's terms you're predetermined systematic response to life and death is not helping anybody prior during or after Because I guarantee when you find out what Eternal judgment is like Without her love coming full circle. versus what we have you will want to get to the truth . fortunately the truth is what sets one's fee for all eternity not a theatrical false sense of Happiness care concern about oneself and others Case Closed Mercy forgiveness is not a form of spiritual welfare that is changing these facts for they have been scientifically classified religiously verified. That's Some of what the volcano goddess revealed to me from the island part of my bloodline originated from.Or maybe it was the Philippines were my daughters mothers bloodline originated.
I started going through mental health issues at the age of 28. I'm now 46 and unfortunately still going through the same nightmarish past and issues for 18yrs. I'm a strong and tough guy but when depression or PTSD throw a punch and they most certainly will. That really hurts me emotionally and mentally. Emotional pain is by far the most difficult thing to get through...💔😢💔😢💔
🙏🙏🙏
Just by seeing her persona, laughter and smile, as talented and as genius as she was, I don't think she (her soul and spirit) was meant for the fighting world. I felt very sad watching this video. If her path had been on another journey, she will definitely be a bright shining light...it's such a heavy loss of a kind spirit.
My heart and prayers go out to the family.
Poor girl underneath that beautiful smile, she is suffering mentally
This is why we should not force kids into something they don’t want to do and it gets super overwhelming before you know it ….be too late. I myself endured such extreme expectations I felt so alone and hated my family ever since knowing I was begging for help like it wasn’t easy to admit it that I actually needed help. I was lucky I had two good friends that listen and try to support me emotionally and then their my job provider went out of her way to make sure I was okay
So sad, I wish great and beautiful people would just take the time to relax and see how wonderful and amazing they are. So many people do not have anything and die from famine. Contentment should be the number one lesson for everyone’s life. Sorry for her loss🙏🏽
I couldn't imagine the amount of pain Victoria must have felt to be able to put on that adorable, huge smile and be able to hide her pain behind it.
I feel her pain as she managed to do the unthinkable knowing she's leaving behind unanswered question... I have not wanted to live that life for so long yet trying 3x and failing at that as well only made me feel worse. I couldn't even do that properly.😮
RIP Victoria 🙏💔
Life is beautiful. Victoria, you were never second best, you were sunshine. Rest in peace.
That’s a LOT of head trauma at such a young age. Early onset CTE is uncommon but far from unheard of
The parents knew. The girl wanted a normal life. They should have given her a year to see what’s what. The parents are so career focus. Sometimes it works to pressure kids. Sometimes it doesn’t.
This is so sad and devastating 😢😢
This family is a champion by hearth, May. God bless you always and Victoria Lee is a treasure in the heart of mma sport
True story my family and I share your pain. We to lost our beautiful baby girl at the age of 21 in 2023 and it shattered our family and today we still are broken its like apart of me died the day of her passing. We think that this would never happen to us because everything looks okay on the outside when in the inside the struggle is real. Prayers to you and your family and with Gods help we'll get through this together , amen
Parents fault. Pure and simple.
It's so sad. I remember watching Angela fight a lot and she was just elite. And Victoria was almost literally walking those same shoes cause she was a great fighter too. So much like her older sister. I haven't followed the brother's journey but apparently he is great too. I can totally understand how much pressure Victoria must have felt being surrounded by greatness all in her family. I remember when I first heard the news of her passing, I thought it was so sad and I could only assume what had happened. This video verified my assumptions. Angela is 100% correct tho...our greatest battle will not be with another opponent but rather with ourselves. Mental health and depression is something I've struggled with greatly for the past 15 years. Don't know how many times I've contemplated suicide, and there has been a couple times I was so so close to ending it all. But I've managed to somewhat get ahold of myself....even if it's not for myself I've realized I have others I must live for(my mother, my 2 daughters...and my dog haha my best friend). I still live with depression daily, and have kinda forced myself into solitude as much as I can. But even when the dark thoughts try to overwhelm me I simply think of my kids and everyone else. If you're struglling with mental health just reach out and talk to someone if you need to. Cause even if you don't care about yourself, there is others that care about you. RIP Victoria. My heart goes out to her family.
Imagine seeing this family out and about and making a mistake of messing with them thinking they’re easy targets
the teen years are so tumultuous. you're dealing with physical changes, wanting to fit in, experiencing your first love, and so much more. parents please be careful with your teen children. in my case music was my shoulder to cry on. the album "the hurting" by tears for fears, music by the smiths helped me through this period of life. I honestly don't know if I would be here today without the music.
