  • The incident, which took place in front of hundreds of watching spectators, was quickly brought under control by royal escorts. The watching royal appeared concerned by the drama, before later disembarking the carriage smiling and unharmed. The 33-year-old was attending the fifth day of the event, which is one of the biggest on the racing calendar, with her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. As their procession arrived, one of the horses pulling the carriage became spooked. Royal escorts quickly moved in to control the horse and keep the others calm, while the mother-of-one looked on from behind. She appeared to get over the shock quickly though and was soon pictured smiling as she got out of the carriage to enjoy the day's racing.

It didn’t look like a classic spook, it looked more like a wasp, bee or horsefly sting. A sudden discomfort rather than a sudden fright. Note it was lashing out repeatedly with its hind legs... as though defending itself, it was not bolting as in a classic spooked

This is why they have a rider on one of the lead horses. I believe that some how part of the harness got between the horse's legs and that often times leads to an impromptu rodeo. You have to give credit to the rider for keeping their seat and their wits. It could have easily ended badly. I'm glad everyone two-legged and four-legged were okay.

Brilliant work of the grooms, footmen of both carriages to bring the one back in control. I assume, based on my personal knowledge of driving horses, the horse stepped over a slack trace, putting it uncomfortably between it's hind legs and squeezing tight their genital area. A " leather wedgie " if you will. Hopefully, trace hangers will be added or, the driver of the wheelers will warn of too much slack of the lead team. Had the Duke of Edinburgh been alive, he would have gone off ...

I remember back when at horse shows as soon as the Pipe band began to play our horses would spin out cantering sideways to the crowd... I can't imagine how terrified these horses would be if one plays up sets them all off.

Fave part of the video…the escort who took the horse’s lead and “bucked” tradition!
When he realized that the harness was wrapped around/under the horse’s leg, he threw three hats on the ground so he could get things taken care of…BRILLIANT!! 💖
(I hope he wasn’t “punished” for it though!)

Yes, he’s real the hero! He noticed the source of the problem and threw those hats on the ground so fast. “F*** these hats!” I’m glad to see them putting the horses first, and with kindness.
