All New TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 2024 - FIRST LOOK, exterior & interior

After being absent from the US market for several years, the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser is making a triumphant return for 2024. But this isn't just a rehash of the previous generation - Toyota has completely reimagined the Land Cruiser with an all-new platform, downsized dimensions, and an innovative hybrid powertrain. We recently got our hands on the new 2024 model for a first drive review.
Right off the bat, the Land Cruiser's bold new styling command's attention with its butch, boxy shape and aggressive front fascia. Though it looks imposing, the reduced footprint compared to the last model actually makes it more maneuverable off-road. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine coupled with an electric motor for a combined 326 horsepower - plenty of grunt to get this SUV moving quickly.
The hybrid setup also provides a surprising amount of low-end torque which comes in handy when crawling over rocks and dirt trails. We put the Land Cruiser through its paces on an off-road course and it shined, with advanced four-wheel-drive hardware like locking differentials and hill descent control inspiring tons of confidence. The ride is compliant yet composed over rough terrain.
On paved roads, the turbo four-cylinder provides enough power for easy passing and merging, though the transmission can be a bit hesitant to downshift at times. However, the biggest adjustment will be the Land Cruiser's car-like driving dynamics - it's far more maneuverable and easier to place than the previous truck-based model.
Inside, the Land Cruiser has an attractive if somewhat plain cabin in lower trims. Higher trims add more luxury niceties. The lack of an available third row may turn off some buyers, but the roomy rear quarters and ample cargo space behind the second row make up for it. Toyota's latest infotainment system is easy to use.
With a starting price of $57,345, the 2024 Land Cruiser represents a far more attainable entry point into this iconic off-road brand compared to the six-figure pricing of the last US model. It's a smart move that should allow Toyota to cast a wider net and bring some new blood into the Land Cruiser family. For off-road prowess in a right-sized package, the new Land Cruiser hits its marks.
