  • First off... Congrats to Jonna Jinton for getting married recently! Second, we were completely mesmerized by her rendition of this song. It's become the de facto national anthem for Sweden, and it's beautiful. Not to mention all the amazing locations in this video.

As a swede I'm getting emotional aswell when I hear and see this. She made the national anthem more like our folklore-songs, change a few tunes here and there. I think she made it better. Japp!
In original, our Swedish anthem is a really dull and sad lullaby, quite unimpressing and not anthem-like at all.
These melodic changes significantly improves it all, makes it more beautiful sad instead of just dull sad.
Still not an anthem, tho... 😀

@@micke_mango Do no really agree with you ha our national anthem is dull and unimpressing. Its definately anthem like. Its an easy melody, thats easy to sing. Italien anthem is really complicated and more opera than anthem, the same thing with the french.
No the only problem is the lyrics. The Sweddish anthem is about all of Nordic countries. We dont sing in sense about sweden, we sing about Finland, Norway and so on. Its about then sweden was a European Superpower. So in sense it would be better to re-write the lyrics, just like they did with the russian Anthem that before was about the communist party. lol.

Have never heard this version of my anthem. It was very beautiful! She's earned another fan!
It's a very "traditional" folk version with a bit different tone (and melody) than the most common version that everybody knows, by Richard Dybeck. However, even that "official" version credits the melody as a folk traditional, so noone really knows how it originally sounded, or o if their were local variations.

    - I highly doubt it. Drop the "D" in the sound. Think "Yonna"! (In Swedish, one doesn't add/include a D in the sound of J, as is done in English. "Johanna" is thus pronounced "Yohanna", and John is pronounced "Yohn")

Dont know if anyone has spoken about this in the comments. but the song is a Swedish national Anthem. and it speaks about the old and the free "du gamla du fria", and it speaks about the free North.
and my interpretation of the song is that it speaks about the Beauty of the land, the free land, and i actually look at it as old gods the norse mythology (vikings and such). because in the melody it speaks about the old land, the free land. and sweden was more of a free land under the viking era, and even though its still green and Beautiful, Think about how it would have looked basicly untouched. and it continues to speak about the old memories of greatness when the name was honored across the Earth.
it continues to speak about how we want to serve the beloved country, and swear faithfully to Death. and to protect the land with glory. and then it speaks about fighting alongside God, for home and motherland? (fosterjord) and that i would never trade the land for Everything in the World.
no i want to live and i want to die in the North. (under is a translation taken from a site).
You ancient, you free, you mountainous north
    You quiet, you joyful beauty
I greet you, most beautiful land upon earth
/:Your sun, your sky, your meadows green
Your throne upon memories of great olden days
Yhen honored thy name flew over the earth
I know you are and you will be what you were
/:Yes i want to live, i want to die in the north:/
I forever will serve my beloved country
You faithfulness, until death i swear
Your right i will protect, with mind and with hand
/:Your banner full of feats, carry
By god i will fight for home and for hearth

    >I can recommend to see a reaction to another Idol winner from Sweden; Jon Henrik Fjällgren; search for "Jon Henrik - Daniels Jojk".
Jon-Henrik and his sisters comes original from Colombia but are adopted to Sweden, to a sapmi inuit couple and when he entertered Idol he started an amazing jouney for the sapmi people. Its not so often you hear jojk in the cities and so Jon Henrik have opend an arena for the sapmi people to share the culture with the rest of Sweden and the world. And jojk is a song that they sing in their own language (there are many language/dialects in sapmi) and they discribe something; like the wind, or a mountain or a person.
First time I heard him was at my parents home and my brother told me to say Hi to a friend of his and so I went up the stairs and into my brothers room and there he was, Jon Henrik (a couple of years before he won Idol), with a guitar and said Hi! He was down to earth and nice and he askes if I wanted to here him sing, I said yes! (I love music) He started to sing and WOW! I got goosebomps and thought Hi will go far in life with his music. And he did!!!
Just that thought have poped in my mind with Jonna Jinto and Chris Kläfford! So check out Jon Henriks audition to Idol of the song Daniels Jojk, a song dedicated to a friend to him who passed away a couple of years ago.
Thanks John and Lulu for making reaction videos of artist in Sweden and continue with your amazing music reaction journey!
And to Jonna; WOW! You are amazing! If you are going to Lit, Jämtland, send me a message some how! I live in a little house and in the evening I sing (kaukar) to the cats to come home and they listen, and the echo outside the house is something I want to share with others!

That’s not true. Sweden never ruled half of Europe (at its peak Sweden didn’t even have 1/8th of Europe) and the Swedish national day is also Sweden’s Independence Day. When Gustav Vasa was coronated as king on the 6th of June 1523 that meant the end of the Kalmar Union which in turn meant that Sweden became an independent kingdom and ended the Danish rule over Sweden.

They said even their teachers would take them out to eat. They said that if you couldn't find where to go, sometimes a person would actually get you a cab and ride with you to take you to where you need to go and pay for the cab. Or the walk with you to make sure you get to where you need to be. The world could learn an awful lot from a country like that.

What she sang was the Swedish anthem. Not my kinda thing per se(I don't mind it), but a really beautiful voice, no doubt.
Don't be fooled though ;D, not all of Sweden looks so great. She found some beautiful uninhabited/sparsely inhabited spots. My family owns a few miles of such lands around our summer house up north in Sweden aswell(near the slopes of the mountains), and we have a couple of those spots aswell. We occasionally take our snow mobiles and go camping near such spots in the winter. It's a great place to read a book, or play some games(like ring throwing, guessing/riddle games, or whatever games the family and my cousins happen to invent for the winter). And then we go back to either families summer house for more games, food and conversations.
Ahh, I miss it... Havn't gone for a couple of years, been too busy. I should try and make some time this winter... I might have moved around a bit, and I might be considering moving to Switzerland because I don't like where our political climate, or our economy is heading(it's just a mess of political conflict, between both the ppl, and the various powers in charge). But I do still love the north.

The person who wrote the lyrics, Richard Dybeck, did not intend for it to be the national anthem. Its original name is "Sång till Norden" (Song to the North) and was intended to be a celebration of the Nordics, which explains why the original verses don't even mention Sweden specifically. There is a verse added about 60 years later that does mention Sweden by name but it is almost never sung and isn't really recognized as part of the national anthem by most people. Sweden has no "official" national anthem as it was deemed unnecessary to give "Du gamla, Du fria" any legal status, but it is our de facto anthem.
I think it's actually pretty neat how our national anthem isn't only a tribute to our own nation, but to our wonderful neighbors who we share a long history and friendship with as well! It fills me with both love for our great country as well as a sense of brotherhood with our neighbors whenever I sing or hear it.
Fun fact: If you disregard the last verse (which most people do anyway) then the Polish national anthem is the only national anthem in the world where the country Sweden is mentioned.

Det är för att Norge och Finland en gång i tiden när låten gjordes tillhörde oss, det har inget att göra med att vi inte vågar sjunga om Sverige
