    This guide is pretty much straightforward on getting rEFInd to work, nice!
    It's been interesting to try it for my triple boot macOS/Pop! OS (now ZorinOS)/Windows PC -- though for obvious reasons I actually don't recommend wanting to use this if you use OpenCore as bootloader for macOS. The devs at OpenCore have already said so, and it's easy to see why -- sometimes rEFInd does not recognize OpenCore on the options, and whenever it is recognized and you boot to it to get to OpenCore, by the time you restart, OpenCore usually most of the time takes over as the main bootloader, and you might as well use Del or F2 to the BIOS setup each time.
    For just Windows and Linux though, sure, it's a neat option.

    Thank you so much! Just solved my problem with a cloned Pop_OS boot. It always booted with console GRUB and was a huge pain to boot with a problem that I was not finding out. Saw about this rEFInd in the Pop_OS forum and you helped so much! Best regards Herbert!

    Thanks so much it works like charm!
    I installed windows 10 after a clean install of Pop_os. Windows bootloader became the default bootloader and of course it doesn't recognise linux os, so my PC would boot into windows 10 by default. However I got into the advanced startup options and I managed to boot into pop_os then I installed rEFInd and it became the default bootloader. It manged to recognise windows 10 and Pop_os, they both work just fine now.

    Thank you so so much. I installed pop os, zorin, mint and win10 in a Toshiba laptop. When I pushed f12, the boot option only shows the hard drive NOT each operating system. I almost gave up till I researched online and found your video. It's interesting that in addition to the zorin booloader including zorin, mint and win10, each of them has their individual boot option so I can directly boot into each os. Thank you again and Happy New Year.

    Hi, I just burnt a copy of rEFind to a CD-R and booted it up on my Mac Pro 2,1 (using alt key at start up) and my machine boots into the rEFind menu but how to I procede from here? I would like to install a Linux distro on my Mac Pro 2,1 but so far I've had no luck. Also, when I boot into rEFind, it automatically boots into my macOS after 7 seconds. Any tips you can provide would be appreciated

    How does one set custom kernel parameters for refind? Having a hard time to understand

  • @LorenzoBettini
    @LorenzoBettini 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video. If I understand correctly, you left only an entry that boots a specific kernel version of POP_OS, so if you install a new kernel, you have to update Refind as well? If you leave the GRUB entry (that you deleted), this should not be required anymore: you just boot in the POP's GRUB which is kept up-to-date automatically when you install a new kernel. Is that right?

    Thanks for the video I tried to follow your instructions but I did not get quite the same experience. I have UEFI mobo with Secure Boot turned off. I have Windows on an nvme drive and PopOS on a 2.5 SSD. Installed refind with the two commands that you showed rebooted but the Windows icon did not show up at all and the Ubuntu neither I got a whole bunch of penguins instead. In one of them I got into PopOs but to get to Windows I still have to press F11 and selected it from there. I have uninstalled refind following the instructions on the refind site and then sudo apt remove but refind still shows up as a boot option in the bios (even though it does nothing at this point). Do you have any ideas of what that could be? Do you think it has anything to do with the one the ssds being an nvme and being physically attached to the motherboard?

    • @Herbertech

    Thanks for the video! Now, how do I uninstall it? :/ I decided I didn't like the lack of options (like setting a default operating system), and I want to remove it now. Also, is this app installed on the hard drive? Or has it embedded itself into the bios (is that even possible?)? If I replace my hard drive (which I'm planning on doing as soon as I get the part in the mail), will rEFInd still be there?

    • @Herbertech
      @Herbertech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! rEFInd is not stored inside the EFI firmware, it's stored in the EFI partition on the hard drive. You can install GRUB, then mount the EFI partition in Linux and remove the rEFInd folder and boot from GRUB. Hope this helps! :)

    • @fyaerwe
      @fyaerwe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HerbertechI'm brand-spanking new to Linux, so I don't know how to do that yet. However, it sounds like I don't have to worry about it, anyway, since I'm replacing my hard drive and will be doing fresh installs of both operating systems. I wish there were more boot managers. I tried EasyBCD on the Windows platform, but Microsoft doesn't allow it to do its thing in EFI mode. I'm currently reading up on how to bypass this so that I can use EasyBCD with the new installation. So far, I've read that EFI is more secure, though, so should I avoid installing Windows in legacy mode (if that's even possible on a newer system)?

    • @fyaerwe
      @fyaerwe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Btw, I'm not an IT person or anything--just a computer hobbyist. I used to know all kinds of stuff, but I've been out of the loop for about 12 years now, so I have to learn all over again.

    • @Herbertech
      @Herbertech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fyaerwe You should watch my video on how to install GRUB on pop-os (read the pinned post too before you continue), it works pretty much for any Linux distro. It is the best bootloader with the most options imo, rEFInd is just prettier. I havent tried easyBCD, I always used GRUB and it always did what it had to do. :)

    My problem with bootloaders is that they don't like to stay in their place. They all try to take over, and change the bios so that they're the one that gets booted first. Grub is real bad about this. It'll go that way for awhile, and then as if by magic, the windows bootloader starts trying to take over again. All on it's own. I wish they guard the bios as law. Whatever the user set for boot, can never be altered by any program, ever. Then and only then would I trust installing and messing around with bootloaders.
