@@carlmclemore6104 I agree, but Pop_OS should not be the go-to distro. It has a few issues, one being that it uses Cosmic, which is forked from GNOME and is significantly slower than Plasma. Another is that I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have one-click WINE functionality. I much prefer Feren OS, which is faster than Pop_OS, and also has better functionality. You should try it out.

The thing is, that back in 2010, Linux really couldn't (realistically) be used as a daily driver for many people. Most times using Linux required (at least) some basic understanding of terminal and the system. However, I installed Ubuntu (not my favorite) on my dad's computer (he isn't really a computer guy) over 3 years ago, after windows 10 failed to keep running. Somehow that laptop is still kicking. Only had to help him once. Sure Linux _can_ be a hassle. But not as much as one would think. I've used PopOS for over a year now and it's one of the most versatile OS's I've ran so far and surpasses my expectations as far as usability and versatility. Especially running closed source and or windows applications. Linux was a difficult choice at first, but recently has risen to be a force to be reckoned with. Especially with the money Steam has poured into its gaming functionality.

My friend has daily driven his Lubuntu for 4,5 years now without never opening his terminal. I had to do use it once for him because he messed up the updates due to being hysterically allergic for terminal&updates and servers shutdown.
My grandparents has been using Mint for 2 years now. I've got literally 0 questions why their computer doesn't work anymore. With Windows it was regular basis.

Not really. My first foray into linux was running Ubuntu on my laptop in 2010... i was 14 at the time. 10.04 lucid lynx. You didn't even need apt-get to update back then. That said, all i was doing was basic browsing and word processing... but that's all it took for me to start learning more about how to operate linux
These days, you could install ubuntu, debian, mint, or some other similar entry level distro onto a flash drive and just run it when you want to play around.
People just aren't willing to learn new things.

QUICK TIP as this was not mentioned. Using the demo mode (flashed to an external hard drive) you can retrieve files off other drives if windows decides to crap itself (as long as they aren't corrupt as well). It's code and app exclusivity that really kills the platform. Even with Proton, Linux is still flawed as a daily driver for gaming, due to the fact that there's still far too many compatibility and performance issues.
Anthony is vastly overstating Proton's effectiveness, he hasn't talked about the biggest problem Proton faces: In the age of on demand patching and games as a service models, every single update has the potential to completely break a game's compatibility with Proton, and as a result Linux users are frequently stuck waiting to play games they own, as Proton/Wine developers forever play a game of compatibility catchup.
...Of course, the problem isn't just gaming, either, you're even more out of luck if you use Adobe products, or need music production applications, or your job wants Microsoft office apps, etc, etc.
More than anything the blame rests on Microsoft and the US Government. The extremist right wing market fundies that people keep electing into government refuse to do anything about monopolies and trusts, we'd be living in a completely different world right now had they gone through with the plan to break up Microsoft around the year 2000, and forced them to open source their APIs.

Four days ago my laptops' HDD broke, luckily I had my old HDD from my PS4. I used to run Win10 on the laptop but I HATED it, so I wanted to go back to Win7 as I like it more. But then I realised I'd to go to sketchy websites to download cracked version of Win7 etc etc etc. I remember my uncle (he introduced me to RPi's as well) mentioned something about Linux OSs, so I followed this tutorial and installed POP just to try it out. So far its a lot like the RPI OS so I am already comfortable with it. I'll most likely move on to the advanced Linux OSs, but we'll see.
    Thanks for the video!

I just installed Pop!_OS on my backup PC which is much older and weaker than my main rig, and there was definitely a huge difference in performance from Windows 10, since it doesn’t have all of that ads, bloat, nor any resource hogging that makes everything so crap and slow. It’s also way cleaner and aesthetic.
I prob wouldn’t have installed Linux if Anthony wasn’t there to convince me to, really like how chill and convincing he is.
EDIT: Now I'm using Linux on my main PC! Tried Linux Mint, but didn't live up to what I loved about Pop!_OS. Really loving and enjoying Pop!_OS, even with gaming! Huge thanks to Anthony for being the man to tell us about it!

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
      The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

      You've completely missed his point.
Contributing to solutions that allow programs written for Windows to work on a Linux distro makes it... uh, easier to run Windows programs on Linux. This is a specific hardware device, yes, but Valve will continue to improve ProtonDB to work out the kinks as to why games DO or DO NOT work on Linux in general which translates to all hardware platforms... that work translates to other programs because you're swapping out Windows software layers for Linux software layers. Which leads to installing Windows programs directly on Linux even more reliably than WINE currently. Like VIDEO EDITORS!
Furthermore, GAMES working is one reason why many people don't just jump over to Linux. If you hit sufficient critical mass for working applications/games then Linux gets used enough to cause an acceleration in Linux support.

The step where he chooses "Clean Install" ERASES your entire hard drive. The WHOLE thing. Do not overlook this or you will lose both Windows and your personal files even if they are on a separate partition of that drive!

Yeah, I think it was at best an oversight and at worst irrisponsible not to mention this. And if you have multiple drives installed you would need to know enough to choose the "right" one for the OS. I know they're trying to make this process look easy, but that part needs a little more explanation.
edit: They did pop up an annotation but even only saying "This method will erase your drive so double check before installing" doesn't really communicate the vagueries involved here especially in a video that is expressly targeted at first time Linux installers, and in many cases I would assume some people watching haven't installed any OS from scratch before.
It would take one moment to say "Careful here that all the data on the drive you've selected is backed up in another location or not needed because this process will completely erase it. Prior OS, data, everything"

@@raja7775 Bottom line is yes. There are two options to avoid this:
      1. Either do a dual boot system that will allow you to have both OS by dividing the drive in two. It's a bit more technical (and mostly requires setting up Windows in such a way that it is possible) but largely feasible.
      2. Do a backup and then retransfer your backup in the new file system. Realistically, you should always make one of your system anyway

@@raja7775 No, only the disk you choose to install it to and all partitions on that hard drive/SSD. If you have a completely separate drive it won't be touched. But the disk you choose will be completely blank and rewritten for just Linux. Back up everything before running the clean install option.

With VMWare Workstation/Player being available for free for personal use, just download the .iso to try any Linux distribution you like in a nice Windows VM window. That was so much harder 10 years ago. Today it's a matter of 2min to set up your Linux VM in Windows for testing/evaluation.

My Linux OS of choice has been Lubuntu for the past twelve years. I love how its low system requirements make it easy to run on older hardware. My two previous laptops were replaced ONLY because of hardware failure instead of software obsolescence.

I have had two Windows 11 devices so far.
1: My personal desktop that I finished building a month ago.
In this case, Windows 11 told me that I NEEDED to have internet to setup windows 11. The issue? I had no drivers installed so I physically couldn't have internet, AND I couldn't install the drivers because windows 11 wouldn't finish setup without Internet. After a few hours of online searching, it turns out there actually is a "continue without internet" button, but it is so cryptically hidden it beggars belief (Hint, you need command prompt). If that new build was my only way of getting online to find the solution, I would never in a million years figured that out.
    2: My Work issued laptop.
My work Issued me this laptop with windows 11 mostly set up, but I needed to finish the set up. Overall it went pretty smooth until all my files downloaded from the cloud and I now had more Icons than could fit on my screen. I legitimately had Icons covering icons covering icons on my desktop (I like minimalist desktops, but for work, quick access to information via shortcuts is crucial) No, the issue wasn't that I had too many Icons (normally the desktop wasn't even half full), the issue was the spacing between the icons was now 3X the size of the icon itself. Now, I cannot stress this enough, it. took. me. HOURS. of fiddling with every setting windows 11 offers, deinstalling and reinstalling any and all drivers, and delving into the deep recesses of my mind to try and figure out how to set the icons back to an acceptable spacing. Finally I found one answer online that worked. Regedit. !#%#ING REGEDIT. I had to make a REGISTRY EDIT to fix my icons. Apparently there is an icon spacing setting in the registry where you can set the spacing of icons. I edited that value to be 1/3 of what it was before, rebooted windows and BOOM, fixed. Why in fiery hell that couldn't have been some kind of option is so far and away beyond me that it is unfathomable.
Every. single. thing. on this OS is just harder for entirely no reason. It continuously fails at tasks that were once simple because some setting was removed, or some design was "Simplified" and gives you no easy solution to its self imposed problem.
I just learned today that Steam now allows you run Windows games on Linux. That was my last reason to stay on windows.
