    We’ve had a ton of adventures since we sailed to the Azores Archipelago, but with a baby on the way we’ve got less than two months to sail over 2,000 Nautical Miles to Malta so it is definitely time for us to get a move on.

    26:02 That's a Lockheed Martin P3 ORION Submarine hunter out giving you a look over. They fly all over the ocean trying to spot submarines, so I'm sure a sailboat out in the middle of nowhere brings a little break to their monotony. Fair winds, Love Y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Noticed that too. Probably doing MP duty in the area from the nearest coastline. Looking for illegal fishing etc. they do a lot more of that sort of thing than just look for subs. In Australia, our RAAF AP-3C Orion MPA are doing constant Maritime Patrols and making a list of all traffic in certain zones, making sure the AIS matches what they see visually. The nice thing about the P3 is that it can fly lower and slower over water than the new P8A MPAs which are based on the B737NG. Those old P3s are just great aircraft for MP work, you can switch off a couple of engines and patrol for hours and hours.

    That’s a P3 Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft, they fly low over water doing patrol work and looking for submarines. It would be a Navy or Air Force asset patrolling the waters there, so it’s good to see them since they do Search and Rescue as well.

      The US Navy P-3 are in reserve, they operate P-8s now so what they probably saw was a Portugal Air force P-3 out of the Beja Air base or maybe even Spains P-3s

    • @tlevans62
      @tlevans62 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@firecap yep, I doubted it was a US aircraft. I think the only P3s the US have left are with the NOAA & Customs & Border Protection. As you said, it's probably a Portuguese or Spanish aircraft since both countries have P3s and are active in that area.

    My sister, who weighed just two pounds when she was born 2 months prematurely in 1959 was almost born on our 28 foot wooden S-boat that my father used to race. You absolutely have to see the Pillars of Hercules when you pass through. It's part of the myth of Atlantis. The Northen pillar is the Gibraltar cliff, and the south pillar is Monte Hacho. The statue of Hercules is in Marocco though. They only have a boring monument in Gibraltar.

    • @tomriley5790
      @tomriley5790 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually people can't agree on the southern pillar - Jebel Musa is the other main candidate.

    • @dribrom
      @dribrom ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomriley5790 True. But as Monte Hacho is more strait south of Gibraltar and it's the first landmark you see if you're sailing west, IMO it's more logical to see Monte Hacho as the southern pillar. Even though Jebel Musa is taller and can be seen from the Gibraltar cliffs. If the weather allows it.

    watching channels over a couple of years: Bobby White lost an entire boat because the anchor came loose, many other mentions of anchors dropping and causing less damage, but the best approach seems to be to have a hole drilled and a metal lock go through the anchor and the bracket and make that the definitive anchor lock each time.

    Desiree. When u go below close one eye, or both if you are doing repetitive things or getting dressed/undressed. This helps you brain balance the conflicting messages between your eyes and your inner ear. I’m prone to getting sea sick but this has worked for me on multiple offshore races and deliveries. If you can, also try to orient your head downward like you are lying down. This helps tremendously as it mimics lying down. Final thought. Sleep with your feet facing forward. This way u won’t have the pressure of your stomach contents pushing on your upper stomach with every wave the boat pushes through. On my boat I go into the Q berth head first as the contours of the hull keep my head above my feet. There are no comfortable sailboats on the open ocean for the first three days. There still not comfortable after that but you body adjusts.

  • @meestahwah
    @meestahwah ปีที่แล้ว

    that plane you saw is a P-3 Orion. the navy uses this plane to do anti submarine warfare. they drop buoys that transmit sonar to ping submarines. the stinger on the tail is the receiver for the sonar signal. the plane flys a pattern at a VERY low altitude to receive the signals. My dad flew them when he was in the Navy and he said they would often circle around sailboats when they saw them, take a photo or two and log their position. he occasionally flew out when a distress call was made to assess the situation for other responders. My guess was the P-3 you saw was on patrol that day and came over to check you out.

    About the “looking forward constantly” while on watch. As a garbage man I have to constantly back up the large garbage truck out of blind alleys & in a lot of different situations. Because the truck is so large & has so many blind spots we have a rear camera on with a display in the cab. So we always know what’s behind the truck. Maybe you could install a forward camera on the front of the boat with a monitor down below? Not that you have to watch it constantly but it would be nice to glance at while below? Could give peace of mind & may even prevent a huge collision.

    There is one thing you can do to deal with the risk of running into a floating container. That is have a proper blue water boat under you that can shrug off such a collision.
    To me, such a boat has a beefy hull and an encapsulated long keel with a nice taper to the lead edge.
    Think a Cape Dory or Island packet. I'll give up that extra knot or ability to point very high.
    The PS40 does have a longish keel and a pretty good slope to the lead edge, so you should be fine.
    One other thing, that section of hull which could experience an impact should be a water tight compartment. Check out some of Atomvoyager's work. He glasses in this area.

    The aircraft that was making low level passes is a Lockheed P-3 Orion. It is a long-range submarine hunter. The long, thin piece that sticks out behind the tail is an antenna. I could not see the markings, so it could be from the US or a NATO country. You may not have been the only folks in that part of the ocean. There might have been a Russian submarine close by. Or, the air crew may have been just practicing. Is Atticus equipped with sonar, you may consider that upgrade in the near future-along with some depth charges! Love your videos.

    Floating Objects:
    IMHO you would never see them early enough to prevent from. Saw some bigger lumber parts in the water - just some 5 - 8m at the side, no opportunity to see them as early so you may manoeuvre.

    We really understand a tough passage and upwind 😭 We sailed 200 miles recently of which half was in 3m steep waves on a very short period, with waves breaking all over the deck. Winds, seas and swells twice the predict wind and local area forecast and it truly was a hard 12 hours! Ps we also had the anchor issue and yep it's now also on our pre departure list! Happens to the best of us and always at the worst time!

    Another beautiful video, liked seeing the Navy P-3 buzzing by you in the end. Their stationed on the island of Tercera in the Azores, I lived there for two years. Your visit to the Azores was as beautiful as I remember it, thanks for the trip back down memory lane. Continued success on you trip!

      My dad flew P-3s, and Lages Navy Air Station in the Azores is not far by air. Plus, these low passes are what P-3 crews train for. But now that the Atlantic Fleet has transitioned almost fully to the P-8, my first thought was that the aircraft was probably a hurricane hunter scouting out TS Gustavo, since I don’t know exactly when you recorded this episode. Now I’m concerned about what we will find out in your next video.

    I look forward to your update every week. I’m so excited for you guys! I had to look up Malta to see where it was. I bet the plane just wanted to see the boat! :-) OSO is so cute! We went out to get a little lap dog in May and came home with Dexter a beagle golden retriever mix! Woah! He’s so big! But so much fun! Just got the snip, Chip, and clip (nails)! Hopefully he will be a bit subdued lol! Can’t wait for next post!

    I'd like to add, you guys living the dream. Used to be my dream to sail about the world like Tristain Jones, but watching the work you put in, things breaking, and vast knowledge and experience.....I'll fly to those locations. I had a 30 ft fresh water sail boat, they are work. She was named "High Maintenance". Great vids, keep em coming.
