Been listening to them since they released their debut in 2000. Hard to believe it's been 20 years, but it's awesome to see that they're still at it and evolving as musicians.
Probably one of the most modest guitarists out there. Dude has come up with some of the coolest riffs in Thrice’s albums. He’s the reason I picked up the guitar.
The illusion of safety changed my life. When they played to awake and avenge the dead at the warp Tour (2002 or 2003), probably one of the best songs i have ever watched live
As a musician I totally get it, but It's honestly depressing to see almost joke on his old riffs like he will never write shit like that again. Because I'd give them all my money to produce even something close to Vheissu again, that album was the perfect blend of heavy and beautiful melody. I remember buying The Artist in the Ambulance and War All the Time on I think on the same day in Hot Topic. The early 2000's were incredible.
Yup. As much as he's a master of tone, creativity and restraint these days, the guy could fucking shred and wrote catchy riffs like they were nothing. The Illusion Of Safety and TAITA are a masterclass in catchy metal riffs.
Why are so many artists ashamed of their old music, especially if it was heavy. These interviews with hardcore artists commonly have moments where they'll mention old music they played, and downtalk the music and themselves. Growing as an artist is good, but be proud of what got you to where you are. Don't worry about what the scene kids today think. Under a killing moon was amazing. The whole album was, and songs like that got so many of us through that period of time. I certainly hope that, at least at the time, there was some emotional connection for them to that song. If not, they sure can write incredible music outside of what they enjoy. Thrice is one of the few hardcore bands that evolved, and continue to still put out incredible music. Love you guys
I think for thrice, based solely on interviews and comments from the members and some comments from fans. They faced a lot of backlash from not "typecasting" themselves and wanting to create different sounds. So they feel a need to defend where they are and what they're doing. At a certain point they became very blunt about it, like you hear Teppei here, "I don't like playing like that". I follow Dustin and Riley and know for a fact they listen to heavy metal, just doesn't mean Dustin wants to scream on every song HE sings.
his playing under a killing moon makes me want to go listen to that song and paper tigers . interesting all the comments about him playing smoke in the water.
Not gonna lie it hurts my heart a little bit to see how dismissive he is of Under A Killing Moon. I love that era of the band, and that song is so fun *because* of the riffs. Totally get that he's grown and likes to write different things now (and I continue to like their more recent work), it just stings to see him criticizing and almost embarrassed by older stuff that still holds a special place to me.
cant deny how awesome it was when the philosophy turned into lyrics. made you think. turned the songs more artistic. separated from most other bands in the "scene"/ genre
Its so interesting to hear him talk about Metallica being an inspiration because they were the band that made me want to play guitar and then I heard Thrice and it just elevated my mind on riffage.
@jasper426 hell yeah tho the illusion of safety has a special place in my heart. if were talking riffs cant ever leave out deadbolt and to awake and avenge the dead
"So yeah our old stuff is lame" **plays fun cheesy riff from Under A Killing Moon** "Our awesome new stuff with feel is way better" **plays a chord progression any 90s alternative band could have come up with** As much as I love Thrice's evolution as a band, I don't think anybody kids themself that TIOS > Alchemy was their golden era. Even their early cheesy Metallica-meets-Refused-meets-In Flames stuff was REALLY good for what it was, especially in the riff department. Everything since M/M is average to good - they've never put out a bad album - but they kinda feel autopilot and missing that energy and experimental spark they were known for. I totally get outgrowing your old material, but keeping and celebrating those beginnings to what made you who you are today is a big part of keeping that inner creative fire lit AND keeping the fans happy, imo.
Metallica and Thrice are my favorite two bands. Metallica will always be my all time favorite but in the last 14 years or so it’s been all Thrice for me. So to hear him name Metallica as an inspiration is awesome. Wish Thrice got more coverage.
So funny Teppei and Dustin can both absolutely shred on guitar.... but both seem so uncomfortable in a setting like this. Dustin was the same in an Ernie Ball add... Just so funny to me, I'd kill to be as good as them on guitar but they both are so humble you'd think they suck.
it is hard to find a new band for me to listen..i listen Alice In Chains alot..and umm STP..one day i accidentally heard one song from Thrice in my friend's house. I found it
Seems like most bands get less riffy over time, sorta sad he doesn't enjoy playing those sorta songs now, wish they could co-exist in a way he enjoyed playing them.
Artist in the ambulance is your best album, dude. Sad, that you guys exchanged Thrice for Radiohead-clone. I still like your music, but it is just nit the same :(
I have a theory that many of the bands that start playing heavy music young end up playing less heavy music once they get older due to a lack of testosterone once you age
@@Lunareste lol no trust me I know that joke very well. However there are people that hate on anything new Thrice does and only cares about their “heavy” days. So I never truly know when someone is either being sarcastic or funny.
Ahh yes one of the old school Thrice fans one who won’t except that they grew up and matured into better song writing and musical capability and just want them to make The Artist In the Ambulance 10 times over
@@darthjalapeno not really, the artist in the ambulance didn't have the energy and musical drive that illusion of safety and identity crisis had. And hell no, its not about them making another copy album. The thing about thrice is that they turned out to be a completely different band with the same members, i think that's what old school fans mean. Anyways, I've come to appreciate their latest 3 albums though to do so i have to think of them as 2 separate bands lol.
No idea who this guy is but I thought I'd give him a shot Then he played smoke on the water completely wrong There's many ways to play it I get that but either play something the right way or don't bother playing it at all

Thrice has this extensive style in its discography and yet I keep finding myself playing A Torch to End All Torches over and over.

Long ago the mission failed!
But in the distance, there appeared a light!
Thrice is one of those bands that no matter how many times their sound might evolve, it always works.
Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets.
*plays Smoke On The Water*
Yesss Teppei playing No Knife! Two great bands collide
his playing under a killing moon makes me want to go listen to that song and paper tigers . interesting all the comments about him playing smoke in the water.
I was floored when he played The Red Bedroom by No Knife riff. Ultimate favorite riff.
