It was a part of my childhood and I watched it all the time, but still I want to hear what you have to say about it.
Tim Story's Fantastic Four movies obviously tried to be like San Raimi's Spider-Man films. The problem is that the Spider-Man trilogy had great stories, likeable characters and a good balance between drama and humor, something that these FF movies lack of.
Honestly, that comparison made me think of how different superhero movies were even a decade ago. Quite frankly, the early-to-mid 2000s now feel oddly nostalgic. The movies of that time wound up creating trends that have ultimately become tiresome (more edge and angst, over-reliance on established franchise names), but the days of LOTR and Spider-Man are still practically a world away from now. At the time it was arguably just what we all needed considering what the big movies of the mid-to-late '90s were - Independence Day? Armageddon? The Lost World? Twister? The Phantom Menace? Godzilla? I'll pass.
For what it’s worth, I actually DO like the 2004 Fantastic four movie. Sure, it’s not Endgame ; but as its own self contained thing it’s pretty enjoyable. That being said, I’m a HUGE fan of the Cosmic Marvel stuff, and needless to say, what Silver Surfer did to Galactus does nothing short of piss me off. I will give it credit for two things: Laurence Fishbourne/Doug Jones’s performance as the titular Silver Surfer, and having the good sense to not ruin Nick Fury for the following year’s Iron Man by having an original character in the Clonel.
On the subject of Victor going into space with them, my guess is it's a protecting investments kind of deal. The project could have serious benefits that would make Doom so rich he could buy several countries and help his company make several scientific breakthroughs, atleast according to Reed. Naturally it's crazy expensive and Victor wants to make sure it goes as well as possible. So it makes some sense.
Well in comics Surfer could do pretty spectacular things and he has a huge range of powers. For example he once took radiation from Bruce Banner body so he was "cured" from Hulk. So it makes sense that he was able to left Johnny without his powers but yeah, i agree that moves itself never told us this.
I don't remember if the second movie did this, but the main thing I remember about the first one is the absolutely balls-out insane amount of product placement they crammed into it. It actually puts Michael Bay's The Island to shame, and that's goddamn saying something.
I think if the Fantastic Four ever goes through *_yet_* *_another_* reboot, maybe they should just do what Marvel had done with Incredible Hulk and will do again with Spider-Man: Skip the origin story, just get to the point. Show them already with their powers, and already in action as the FF.
Nice review as usual Sean. After you review Fant4stic, could you consider doing these options as well? 1. Green Lantern 2. The Golden Compass 3. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation 4. The Lone Ranger 5. Batman V Superman What do you think? Reply if you agree Sean?
While The Lone Ranger is pretty bad, it's not all bad. The action and visuals are great (nominated for an Academy Award) and the acting/chemistry between Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer is a lot of fun to watch. I hope the two get together more often. But the story is bland, it goes on for to long and half the humour didn't work that well. It's a shame the movie wasn't as good as it could've been. I wanted to see them make a franchise out of this like Disney were planning (much like John Carter only that films actually good). So yeah, Sean should review it.
I heard that the makeup effect for Doom, after he stops being a statue, at the beginning didn't turn out well. The studio thought that it looked too gruesome for young audiences, so they got the makeup artist to keep changing it and in the end apparently all the changes made it look like something from a bad Power Rangers episode.
Neo-Xgray87 Eh, I haven't read the comics, but I agree that they're both better than the 2015 one. Heck, Fant4stic is the only movie I've ever seen that legitimately bored me.
funcoolfunfun You're telling me. And I only knew about the Fantastic Four, by watching them team up with Spider-Man, Storm, Captain America, Iron Man and the Black in the 1990's Spider-Man animated series and then later on in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
funcoolfunfun And there was also that 2008 animated series called, "Fantastic Four: World's Greatest heroes". Yeah, I'm surprised that nobody ever mentions that series, obviously.
Galactus has unknown godlike abilities depending on the amount of planets he has consumed. The Silver Surfer though has a specific set of powers. He can survive in any environment, He can fly in any environment (gravity or time doesn't effect him in space), He doesn't need to breath/eat/sleep/drink, has the most powerful healing factor shown in the Marvel Universe and can absorb/re-direct energy or use his own "power cosmic" for energy shields/Energy Beams/ Energy Blasts etc. There are other powers that have shown up from time to time, for "The Almighty Lazy Writer Plot Convienience" then disapearing (Like Superman's), but these powers that I have listed are the Surfers basic powerset that hasn't changed since his creation.
1. We're assuming the Surfer knew all along a hundred percent that would work. If he's wrong, he loses the people he cares about so it's one hell of a risk to take. In the same way the comic version sees life as unimportant at first, faced with a seemingly all powerful entity only his family matters. This is similar reasoning to Tony initially not doing the Endgame time heist. 2. Few people are prepared to die for a bunch of people they haven't met. Hell, we won't recycle properly for a bunch of people we haven't met.
Apparently, Galactus was made a cloud by order of then Fox CEO Tom Rothman (not the first bone-headed idea he had during his tenure). In fact, some pre-production artwork had him look closer to his comic book image: i.imgur.com/Smp8yEF.jpg
From what I learned from Midnights Edge, Tom Rothman had Galactus turned into a space cloud instead of an enormous humanoid because he believed that audiences wouldn’t want to see giant robots. Little did he know that in spite of having Michael Bay as director, Transformers (which was released the same year as Rise of the Silver Surfer) would prove him wrong.
i like how the one girl in the scene where mr fantastic expands his fingers gets this really creepy look on her face. you know whats going through her mind...
Rise of the Silver Surfer is a huge guilty pleasure for me and, truth be told, I find it a little underrated. But yes, the problems still remain and Sean pretty much nailed most of my thoughts on it. Feel free to check out my review here: letterboxd.com/dvass91/film/4-rise-of-the-silver-surfer/ The first Tim Story movie, however, is fucking garbage - it's worse than The Phantom Menace, in fact (YES, I FUCKING SAID IT, COME AT ME, BITCHES!!!) - and almost killed my love for the Fantastic Four. For 2/3 of the movie the Four sit on their asses and waste our time until the climax when they fight Doom. And that's the reason why I won't ever bother with Fant4stic - because both it and the 2005 version are essentially the same film in terms of structure. It really is sad that Rise of the Silver Surfer is the best Fantastic Four movie we've got, but I'll take what I can get.
The only thing wrong in this video is that the Fantastic Four are not and never have been 'Super Heroes' in the classic sense. They are explorers who get into trouble and use their powers to get out. That has been their thing since day one. If they happen to save the world then so be it, but it's usually because they caused whatever it is that is threatening the world, or at least discovered it.
(18:07) - You Missed it! She obviously figured out how to make her suit disappear ! Hang on...(...mutter...mutter...mutter...) Ahhh....never mind....the writers were just hung over that day.
I've always been annoyed by "As you already know..." exposition. As a seven-year-old, I remember recoiling at an Enid Blyton book, I can't remember which, but I remember the expository monologue practically word for word to this day. The intrepid kids are on the trail of a shady underground group, but they don't know what they're up to yet. However, they are holed up in the castle when the lead baddie says to his trusted lieutenant, "As you know, we've invented this new explosive. It's called Stellastefany..." and it goes on from there, telling the minor heroes everything, so they don't need to find anything out for themselves.
I wish Michael Chiklis could've gotten the chance to play The Thing in a good Fantastic Four movie. He deserves it.

The glowing cloud part. Ah a reminder of when Night Vale was still fun.
What? Where exactly it isn't fun now...?
9:30 yea they did hav more scene with Alicia cause there’s an extended version of the movie that gave her more screen time
Well played, Smeg .. especially the 'cant stay mad at you' set up..
damn,.. the voting for orange wannabe hitler was even better
If there are 4 reviews of Fantastic 4 movies on Cinematic Excrement that would a Fantastic 4 Reviews.
The fact that we even see Galactus' silhouette in the movie and the storm cloud is what we got?
“Bitch, you had a choice the whole time!”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Chiklis probably took a cue from Ana Steele to make "crap" his catchphrase
Jessica Alba is STILL smoking hot! Does this woman EVER age?! Also Maria Menounos who plays the nurse in the first movie is gorgeous!
Show them already with their powers, and already in action as the FF.
personally in my opinion i feel like they screwed up the silver surfer and the power cosmic because that's not how the silver surfers powers work
Nice review as usual Sean. After you review Fant4stic, could you consider doing these options as well?
1. Green Lantern
2. The Golden Compass
3. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
4. The Lone Ranger
5. Batman V Superman
What do you think? Reply if you agree Sean?
While The Lone Ranger is pretty bad, it's not all bad. The action and visuals are great (nominated for an Academy Award) and the acting/chemistry between Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer is a lot of fun to watch. I hope the two get together more often. But the story is bland, it goes on for to long and half the humour didn't work that well.
It's a shame the movie wasn't as good as it could've been. I wanted to see them make a franchise out of this like Disney were planning (much like John Carter only that films actually good).
So yeah, Sean should review it.
Love the welcome to nightvale references peppered thru your series lol
One reviewer, whose name I do not recall, summed up Jessica Alba as follows: "she makes bad acting look effortless. "
I heard that the makeup effect for Doom, after he stops being a statue, at the beginning didn't turn out well.
The studio thought that it looked too gruesome for young audiences, so they got the makeup artist to keep changing it and in the end apparently all the changes made it look like something from a bad Power Rangers episode.
love your channel dude
I honestly really like these movies.
Well, at least it's better than the 2015 version. But man....they really fucked up the Silver Surfer and Galactus' characters in the sequel.
Neo-Xgray87 These two movies were actually the first time I saw the Fantastic Four in anything.
funcoolfunfun And there was also that 2008 animated series called, "Fantastic Four: World's Greatest heroes". Yeah, I'm surprised that nobody ever mentions that series, obviously.
@ 7:30
This REALLY bugs me. Why would a man missing his right eye be holding a rifle in his right hand?
Raja Gosnell almost made a Fantastic Four movie? Good lord, just imagine that parallel universe.
Yes, next time will be Fant4stic. Fuck that movie so much....
On a silver platter.. I see what you did there..😅
the best part of the movie is when the thing says its cloberin time and clobered all over doom.
Some of us had to strategically move our popcorn when Chris Evans abs showed up.
i like how the one girl in the scene where mr fantastic expands his fingers gets this really creepy look on her face. you know whats going through her mind...
It wasn't until recently that I learnt that Raymond Holt was in the Second One? RIP Andre Braughner.
the first one is a guilty pleasure.
To this day, I don’t understand why neither of the big screen Doctor Dooms are ruling dictators of Latveria.
F-YEAH! Fant4stic's next month!
D Vass I remember the second movie more than the first one for some reason😅
Grainne Quinn Maybe it's because some actual effort went into it.
+Cinematic Excrement I am so glad you did these two movies in one review that is AWESOME!!! Will you do more reviews like this in the future??
(18:07) - You Missed it! She obviously figured out how to make her suit disappear !
Hang on...(...mutter...mutter...mutter...)
Ahhh....never mind....the writers were just hung over that day.
I dunno, I still like the 2004 movie, though it’s also the only one of these I actually saw, so...
Best birthday present I've gotten all day!!
12:03 You were saying, bitch? XD
God help you for the next one.
Now I haven't read an FF comic, but I do fans say that Evans was faithful to his comic counterpart, despite him being older.
