My guess is he got a lot (as in a bunch of figures in bulk of varying levels of condition), so collectors wouldn't value them anyway.

I disagree. While JJ is good at making flashy movies, he doesn't seem innovative or creative when it comes to an established franchise. Which I agree is hard to do.
But they had mounds of lore and stories from the EU. If they wanted a strong female lead, I would have loved if they had went with Mara Jade. A great character in my opinion.
However I believe Rian Johnson is in fact a great director but he should never have directed a film that is established and has the lore that Star Wars does. He seems to me like the type of director that has his own vision and the need to create his own world.
That style and mentality doesn't fit well with Star Wars in my opinion. And I think he should have said no to the job personally.
