In this video, we will talk about the values of moves in our games. Once you have a rough idea about what your moves are worth, then you will be able to make much wiser decisions. We will not only take a look at values of influence, but we will also take a look at why a Ponuki is worth 30 points and so on.

Why is the rule of thumb that you need to make double the points when pushing? Intuitively it seems like making an equal number of points + the value of sente should be enough.
Is the idea to make the profit much bigger because the center is easier to reduce than the sides?

In Kyu games, if the opponent is willing to crawl on the 2nd or 3rd line, then you could push until the opponent plays away. If it is a lower dan game, I sitll might push until the opponent plays away unless there is an obviously bigger move to play, like smash another stone on the side to turn this influence into a moyo.
If there has to be a rule of thumb, then it is... If your opponent is crawling on the second line, then you can push until your opponent decides to play away. If your opponent is crawling on the third line, then push until your opponent hane-ing up doesn't bother you THAT much and you playing away has much more value than your opponent's hane.
I am a huge fan of influence and controlling the middle of the board, so when my opponent is thinking "ah, that is good enough territories for me. I am winning!", I'd be there thinking "Ah, he took those very pathetic territories and I got the influence. Very good game for me" haha
Considering Kyu level players have almost no skills in reduction and invasion and shinogi, I always recommend to play moyo and influence style instead of territorial style. Also since there are almost always nasty fights in Kyu games, I recommend Kyu players to get some thickness and influence instead of grabbing territories too early on. Having influence and thickness makes mid-game fight so much easier for you.

@@simplebaduk makes sense, thank you. Kyu players do love to overplay and start ridiculous fights everywhere so trading a few points for thickness does sound like a great strategy

If your stones are facing the edge of the board, they are already making territory. However, if your stones are facing the center of the board, then there will need to be at least another wall on the opposite side to turn it into territory. That's the source of that "double the points" suggestion he gives. Efficiency of stones equals amount of territory divided by number of stones used to achieve it.
