I wish the internet existed when I first bought my Brother KX350 about 25 years ago. I needed a sponge strip when I bought it but I didn't know it. The machine never really worked as good as I know it should have. It wasn't until last year that I realized the sponge strip was dry rotted and needed replacing. I finally replaced it and wow. My machine works. I could have been using my machine a lot more than I had in the past 25 years. Thank you for posting this video and giving the sponge strip tip.

MILDRED PIERCE Yes, it is really amazing how much better the machine works with a new sponge strip. I hope to make other tutorials with my knitting machine.

Hi, I am new to machine knitting and love this hat...I started today and tried it on a Bond I purchased on E Bay to see if I would like it...It came out o.k. for my first project. I casted on 65 stitches and made my brim 30 and then did 35 rows. I think next one I will cast on a little more. Thank you for this great hat, I am going to make them for charity also.

Janet Wachter Great job! Yes different machines might need different stitch counts and rows, you will find what works best on your machine. You might try changing out the plates also.

Yes, I noticed she had the extra weights to the left and back on her table and didn't use them. I find they help keep the stitch sizes even and pull the fabric down as it is created.

A quick transcription of the video, done by someone who has never seen machine knitting patterns and just did his best. Watching the video is critical to understanding this all, but I hope this helps!
    Worked in bulky setting.
Pull forward every other stitch, from -35 -> 35, for a total of 70 stitches, 35 currently pulled forward.
Cast on, hang your cast on combs, ensuring you have all edges done correctly with no excess yarn pulled nor left unweighted.
    Pull remaining stitches forward.
Work 49 more rows, moving weights appropriately. This makes a total of 50 rows worked.
    Remove cast on combs.
To make the hem, put the bottom line of stitches onto their respective needles. You should have 2 stitches on each needle now, the first and last stitches worked at this point in the pattern.
    Re-hang your cast on combs.
Work 30 more rows, moving weights appropriately. Be careful on the first few rows not to drop a stitch with the added bulk of the hem stitches.
Transfer every other stitch to the same direction by 1 needle. For instance, the stitch on needle -35 goes to needle -34, the stitch on -33 goes to -32, and so on.
Push back all unused needles to the holding/original position.
    Work 2 more rows.
Cast off from the machine using a tapestry needle to pull your end through each remaining stitch, removing it from its needle as you go. Pull the end tight to get the tight top of the hat, and sew up the sides of the hat to close it all up with a nice mattress stitch, shown in another of Knitting Bloom's tutorials.

cool thanks! I'm assuming on a regular 4.5mm machine I could pull out every other needle, then push every other one of those back for cast on (so 1/4 of my needles are forward), then bring them back forward again and knit the hat using every other needle (a.k.a. 9 mm or 1/2 the needles)? It's a KnitKing kk98 and/or Brother KH-868, described as a standard 4.5mm model "or 9mm using every other needle". It's a metal bed machine... I'm sure I will figure out the benefit of a convertible machine at some point, like maybe when some of my 4.5mm machine sort of gets in the way when I'm using every other needle (or 1/4 needles for cast on). Of course mine doesn't seem to have "key plates" per se.

A good way to use the skein is to pull it out into a small container (small bathroom trash can, box, etc) and then the yarn will flow freely without having to pull it .

I have the option to choose between a Singer LK-140 and a Brother KX-390 and I can't decide. I already have a Brother KX-350 and I love it! I understand that the main difference is that the KX-390 is convertible, but the LK-140 is new and the other one isn't, although it is in very good shape. What would you recommend me? Help!

It looks so fiddly , not sure I'd be able to really do this, I taught myself to crochet about two yrs ago and I want to learn to knit . This looks great I'm just not so confidant xoxo

    • @Bloomingknitter
      @Bloomingknitter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

It is pretty fiddly, and not something that you can really do in a group or even while watching TV, because of the noise. However, if you need to get something knit in a jiffy then machine knitting is the way to go. I have mostly used it to knit up squares that I crochet an edge on and back up to another square for an animal snuggle. It works great for simple projects like this that would normally require a lot of time to complete.

Silver Reed line of knitting machines and the Ultimate Knitting Machines are the only ones, I believe, that are currently manufactured. Brother, Studio, Toyota, Singer, Knit King, Passap, Bond Classic, Knit Smart Afghaner, Empiral Knitmaster are no longer manufactured. You can purchase a used knitting machine on Ebay, or maybe find one for sell locally through a private seller.

@@prabhagondi8900 The Bond (Ultimate Sweater Machine) has not been manufactured since around 2012. There are a couple of Chinese companies currently manufacturing 'clones' of old Brother machines. These seem to be of variable quality - nothing like as good as original Brothers of course, but functional.

Nice tutorial, just a little observation, when the needles are all the way to the back of the machine, it is called "non-working position" not "holding position". The holding position is when you put the needles all the way out to the front and the carriage on hold.

What charity do you send the finished hats to? 😃 😃 😃 I use a Knitting loom : how wide is the brim? (2"or3") & how many inches is it from the brim to the top of the hat( 7" - 8") maybe . I see it is single yarn being used on the machine , does it matter if you double the yarn to make it thicker for whichever charity this is for?

What is a good price for these on ebay? if i could get an electronic for a comparable price, which would have the most versatility? i am leaning tward convertible based on the variable yard weights. Nice music choices btw. a refreshing breakaway from that classical music most knitters play.. i'd throw in some metal, just to be honest haha.

How many stitches wide would you make a toddler sized hat?

    • @Bloomingknitter
      @Bloomingknitter  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Jessica Duncan It would probably depend on the yarn and the size machine you are using. I do my preemie hats 60-72 stitches, but that is on fingering weight. If you are using worsted weight 50-60 stitches would probably work for that. Maybe a bit more if you are using sport/dk weight. Hope that helps.

Push back all unused needles to the holding/original position.

hi, i don't know if you will read this but if you do, can i knit this hat using a a brother kh 881 knitting machine? thanks

    • @Bloomingknitter
      @Bloomingknitter  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Bahay Kubo Hi, yes, you could knit it on the KH881. From what I can see the KH881 is a 4.5 mm machine, so if you are using worsted weight or heavier yarn you will need to be sure to only use every other needle, and leave the other needles in the back of the bed out of use. I hope that makes sense. If you are knitting a fingering, sport or DK weight, you should be able to use every needle. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am praying it work. I purchased a kh551 with ribber I made several item but could not get the ribber to work. I thought it was missing connector arm. It was not. So I have it out again trying to teach myself on using it. I also have a bond but need a new row counter. Thanks keep me posted

Prices for flat bed (or circular) machines vary. Most are available on eBay. Some by private sellers such as on Facebook Marketplace or Craig's list.

I really really wish you'd worn the hat or put it on a mannequin head.
Otherwise great video! I've been thinking about graduating from circular knitting machining... pluses and minuses, but this looks simpler than I had originally thought.
