- Expand your knitting machine skill set with this video. While making this warm winter hat, you will also learn several time-saving techniques that when practiced will speed your KM projects along.
The Half Hour Hat was designed as the practice project for two very special techniques. First, practice hanging an every-other-needle hem in less than a minute. Second, practice transferring select stitches with a garter bar.
Besides these techniques, an additional 5 time-saving tips are introduced.

You can do it!
I knit 3 practice hats and then one for a gift all in a row. My chunky machine has the ribber attached so, duh, me, the flipping technique didn’t work. Went to a flatbed and whoohoo! Just gave the gift hat to the recipient and the smile on their face when it went on was priceless! I used Patons Kroy sock yarn doubled. Fabulous hat! Thank you so much for this. I use it for every turned hem, now.

So much to learn from your video. You handle each technique with so much confidence.
It's just a matter of practice. Think about it. In about 7.5 hours of knitting and 7.5 hours of finishing you will have 30 hats. That's exciting!

You're very smart! The way I do the double thread at the top, is I always end my knitting on the left side of the machine, then take the stitches off, (threading them through) from the right. Once off the machine, I pull them tight... Thanks for the video!

i would cut the finishing yarn twice the length and thread it into needle, bring the needle to nearly half way of yarn, (leave the end piece a little longer, then pick off all your stitches, now you have double yarn through all stitches for a strong finish. works for me enjoy

Yes, absolutely. Tuck stitches tend to spread sideways.

oh my, that is a brilliant and fast way to make a hung hem! Thanks! I never saw those "stopper plates?" you used with the garter bar, what are these?
I believe they are actually called Needle Stoppers but before I knew their real name...they will always be stopper plates in my mind! They come with the standard bed garter bar set. I am assuming you have a garter bar for a mid-gauge or bulky. They only came with the Brother Bulky garter bar set (which is rare to find) but they are available separately through Kriskrafter.com for 6.5 mm and 9 mm machines. They may also have them for other sizes but I haven't looked as I don't have other machines. I use them all the time separately whenever I need to stabilize the needles such as for latchtool/crochet cast-ons. They just don't let the needles move so everything comes out even. You can use a garter bar without them but frankly they make the task far easier!
Love the hem hanging technique, that's one of my least favorite things to do by hand 😅
I was thinking about trying this on a Brother standard, and was wondering if you've ever tried doing the eyelet decreases with a lace carriage...
I've done this same hem on a standard bed using every and every other needle. I've never tried doing an eyelet decrease with a lace carriage. Want to enlighten me?
@@TwistedYarns @Twisted Yarns all just theorizing, haven't tried yet, but I'm so bad at using a garter bar I was trying to think of how to avoid it... Anyway, select your every 4th needle like in the video, then run the lace carriage across so those stitches get transferred. Then push those previously selected needles, which no longer have stitches on them, out of work and knit as the original pattern. Just using the lace carriage rather than the garter bar to transfer stitches.
I might have to give that a try for the crown shaping. Thanks.

Hi I love your video and wanted to download the pattern but the voucher code doesn't work, it says forbidden. also I wanted to ask:- do I have to use the stopper plates as I don't have any.
In answer to your question, you don't have to use the stopper plate (needle stopper) however, it makes the task very difficult without one. These can be purchased separately from Kriskrafter.

Yes you can do it on the standard gauge machine; just adjust for the gauge. The coupon code should work as everybody else is using it.

Hi Barb, I actually did some of the hats on the LK150. For a lighter worsted weight yarn, I was at 7.5 or 8 but the hats were slightly smaller. For charity work that's fine however I would go up one size if I were making them for a specific person. The heavy worsted weight yarns just wouldn't run easily on the LK... that is on every needle. I reverted to my tried and true Brothers Bulky 230 for those really heavy Red Heart worsteds.

This is a Brothers 230. What's nice about this machine is that you can also purchase a ribber for it. As most knitting machines, these are now only available used. You can try eBay or a knitting machine dealer. You can also try some Facebook pages that specialize in reselling knitting machines. Best wishes.
You can also use an LK150 to do flatbed work but the LK doesn't come with a ribber. It is a plastic machine. These can be purchased new at this time.
I am a beginner machine kinging learning, this technique is too complicated for me just to see all your tools 😢

How many stitches for a baby
It would be about 46 sts. you don't want it to be too tight on an infant. 48-50 for a toddler would be about right.
You'd need to cut back proportionally for the crown too. Probably about an inch. I will work out the specifics and get back to you.
Way too hard to follow.
