Testing out the new Wood Stove

  • 3-19-16 Today I test burned the Pleasant Hearth 1200 wood stove. I used dry kindling with newspaper. The first two burns are only supposed to get to 250ºF to slowly cure the paint. Today's fire will be a full burn, which is supposed to be 500ºF. As far as smoke goes, we'll have to see how well it gets up to temperature and if I have enough draft. The dented Selkirk stove pipe was unfortunate, but, I got $30 off for being dented. Thanks a lot for watching to all my viewers.

      That would stove looks identical to the one I plan on purchasing but it's a different name it's by us stoves it is Defender 2 is the wood stove I'm looking at. It says it takes a 17-inch log online and an 18in log by the manual. I wanted a wood stove that takes an average piece of wood. And not have to cut every log down I put in the wood stove.

    Craig...I've been passing this information along to wood burning enthusiasts; To clean the creosote off the glass, take a half sheet of kitchen paper towel, fold it in thirds, get it damp wet, and dip it into the cold ash in the morning, and use that to scrub the creosote off the glass. Works like a charm. No more expensive cleaners in a plastic bottle.

    Hi I am a professional fireplace installer for over 25 years. You need a ceiling support box to make the transition from single wall to class A pipe. All of your single wall pipe should fit so the pipe above fits into the pipe below so any creosote will drip down into the stove.

    Very nice video. You did a good job with the installation. My only other comment has to do with the thermometer. I think 400-600 is a little "too hot". People should judge their "comfort zone" rather than following their thermometer. I have 3 thermos, different ages, all same styles. They all have their "burn zones" between 250-450 Yeah i know, not much difference. Just don't get it too damn hot, especially if it starts turning "RED" Oh yea, if there's no blower on the stove, you should at least have a FLOOR FAN nearby, just in case the stove "overheats". That will help bring down the stove temp and push more heat into the room. Keep a steamer-pot filled because "warm air" will hold a lot more heat than COLD AIR. I fill mine every couple hours. Happy Burning

    my plate runs best between 450-550 degrees, it really wont gas too much on the secondary burn till you get over 500 and then you need a good draw pulling that air through the dryer vent. i dont let my plate get into the red over 700 degrees. my stack is 12 ft, and if you get any higher off the roof you will need bracing by code.

    Install a damper inside the chimney to regulate flow through the woodburner to get the most btu's it can produce

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HONEY B GUYS I don't have a draft problem so I don't think that would help. My pipe is only 14' tall so I could actually benefit from more draw. I thought a damper slows a fire down, I could actually use a little more heat to keep my creosote down. Next year will be better, the wood isn't quite seasoned yet.

    • @honeybguys6346
      @honeybguys6346 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Craig Arndt It does slow the flow this giving you more heat and will allow the wood to burn slower thus burning less wood. The chimney will get hotter because the fire box is hotter. Best of all worlds.

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  ปีที่แล้ว

      These EPA stoves need well seasoned (bone dry) wood. Any moisture in the wood will cause steam, lower the stove temperature and cause creosote. When I have dry wood, the glass is clean or powdery white. But unfortunately, my wood pile got snow covered in the blizzard and is now wet. Planning to clean the stovepipe next weekend. When you clean the stove pipe, vacuum up all the creosote on top of the insulation blanket in the stove, that can cause poor air flow of the super heated air. Dry wood really makes things a lot easier, this year I plan an outdoor wood cabinet/rack to store my wood so look for a future video.

    Hey that fresh air intake. Is it necessary to install this in through the wall or can it still be installed without it

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can be installed without going outside, but then you're using heated air from inside the house. That creates a vacuum and generally in a home, would make other rooms much colder. For my shed, I didn't need to do that since air is coming in from lots of places. But if you have a tight house, you'll have a hard time getting air to the fire and struggle to get a good burn. Adding- even in this little shed, I can hear the air being pulled in from outside the vent I installed.

      It depends on the pipe. Double walled pipe I used, the exterior stainless pipe is expensive. I believe I wound up paying around $400 for the 15’ of pipe including the bracket for the roof, cap, etc. The interior pipe is black and its extendable so that save me from buying several pieces and paying all that shipping. I remember I paid more for the pipe than I did the stove.

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kelly, I think you will like it. Since I insulated my 200 sq ft shed, it heats it nicely. I really like the stove, but like any stove they have quirks you need to learn. Dry wood, is a real must with it. The vent rod doesn’t do much as most have said. I installed new door gaskets, that made a huge difference, performance got so much better. I draw fresh air from outside. Im using 14’ of double walled pipe, minimums are 15’ foot tall pipe and I draw pretty good. Only thing I wish was better was air glass cleaning, it only cleans the middle. I run the stove, get it hot, let it burn, pull coals forward, reload. All fire bricks are still intact after two years, all internal baffles are rust free still. Well made stove, just spend time with it like any stove. I’m going to have more videos on it, I love to use it.

      @@CraigArndt I have 256 square foot cargo trailer with a 76 or 77 inch ceiling then I'll probably lose 2in on when I insulate the ceiling. It's 8 foot wide x 32 ft long I think I'm going to need a fan to push the air around. How tall is your ceiling? I would say your ceiling height is taller than mine. Is your wood stove rated 1200 square foot and around 58,000 BTU? Any thoughts on cutting the heat back on the wood stove if it gets too hot? I guess I would rather have a wood stove that's too big than too small.

      @@kellybishop6801 how was the wood stove too big for your place? Too hot and you couldn't cool it down? I've got a wood stove that's a lot bigger than my place and I was just wondering. I thought I might want a wood stove that's too big versus too small.

      Newer stoves have an inlet for pulling in outside air. Behind the stove tucked under the rear, is a 3" fitting for the hose. The air for the stove pulls from outside so I'm not using air from inside the shed. Just have to watch it so it doesn't get filled with cobwebs I suppose.

  • @twoweary
    @twoweary 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The stove top temp. is pretty much IRRELEVANT . You need to watch your flu temp. to keep creosote from building up. I keep a thermometer on my stove top just know what temp it is .

    Hi how important is the tube that is the back

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is just a dryer tube hooked up to supply fresh air. I think it is code now pretty much everywhere that all stoves need to pull in outside air for combustion. The instructions showed two methods of hooking up the fresh air tube, but said it needed to be operated with that in place.

    • @jescalona444
      @jescalona444 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yesterday was my first day and I do not have the tube installed it happens to me that so soon the door extinguishes the fire.

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jescalona444 I didn't use the tube the first burn either. Too excited to use the stove. I found that opening the door caused a negative pressure without the fresh air tube and I got smoke inside. You'll want to plan where the fresh air will come from. When the stove is working, I've gone outside and put my hand near the rodent screen and you can feel the air going in. It definitely is designed to pull from the outside.

    • @jescalona444
      @jescalona444 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CraigArndt Is it possible that this will be the reason why the fire extinguishes not having the tube?

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jescalona444 Assuming you have dry wood, yes probably. Try opening a window nearby and see if that relieves the pressure. These stoves are sealed so I never crank it closed tight, I just want the door gasket to seal a bit. Once a good draw is going and the stove is hot, it works great. This stove needs bone dry wood, any wet wood is futile. If your house is well insulated and tight, without that tube its going to be starved for air. Try opening a window and see if that helps.

    Windex on the glass when it's cool or just warm. Let it soak then razor blade takes it off easy. Lay Kleenex on the inside of the glass if a cold stove. Spray as putting it on & let it soak then razor blade it off. . Nice job !

      Pipelyon Thanks! Wet paper towel with a little ash on it works like magic. It’s really incredible. I just bought another 36” section of double wall stainless pipe and a roof brace. I really need more pipe to draft better. That should give me 16 or more feet and make the stove do a little better. That video is this weekend.

      +richard crane Right, I measured mine from the floor to the top of the chimney, its 13' and the minimum is 14'. I think a taller flue would help a little, but I really think this is the design of the stove. It draws pretty good but the door has to be open just a hair, literally.
