    Round 3 with the BK9... maybe should've chosen a piece of wood without a huge knot right at the top! Honestly I think they all would've struggled to get through that piece.

      it's things like that that necessitate throwing out the best and worst result. Every knife had a tough and an easy piece of wood, and the average of the remainder was extremely consistent.

    Well, Jessica X performed precisely as advertised, and dollar for dollar, that's tough to beat. Nice work creating a relatively uniform set of testing conditions!
    Best moment of the video - chasing the chickens...lol

    I like your vids, your very thorough. I have to admit that I'm partial to the Jessica X. I really didn't want to like it, but it performs great.

      I have to admit that I didn't expect to be surprised by the jx. it has performed beyond my expectations.

    Next chopping test should be that rooster! lol Just kidding I grew up on a small farm and I would rather wake up to a rooster than any alarm clock.
    That wood seems a little weak or those knives are really great. I don't have any of then so I can't say for sure.
    Chop on! I'll keep watching.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      You know, I did this full test halfway through in the past, but I broke my baton, and had to do it all over.
      It was MUCH harder the first time, because I used a smaller baton. (would still be considered large to most people)
      That huge baton made things MUCH easier, and from now on in the bush, I will be making large batons, no questions asked. they save a TON of work.

  • @preparedmind101

    I could have saved you the trouble, but glad you did it. That being said, that's an easy medium. The Jess-X geometry is going to spilt better every time. That's why its a low saber.
    I suggest a second baton test. The hardest, nastiest most evil wood you can find. Twisted oak from a tree they hung witches on. Stuff you'd be scared to baton with most knives. If you break one of your 1095 knives, I'll replace it.

      +PREPAREDMIND101 Which blade is thicker stock Jess or BK9? I don't have either of them.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cyclist01222 Jess-X might be a hair thicker on stock (I dont recall exactly) but where it SEEMS thicker is the grind of the blade. the Bk9 is a combat knife. Designed as a combat knife to perform as a large combat knife. Also happens to work very well in the woods. To me, that makes it a great SHTF knife.
      Jess-X is WAY different. There is a lot more flat space in the blade. That's on purpose.
      When I design knives, I start with the question "What do I want it to be great at?" Then I figure out what shape the blade needs to be 3-dimensionally to accomplish that. In this case: batoning and chopping. A lot of times that means what you end up with isn't going to be "pretty". That grind on the JX is a specific height to achieve a specific angle for the specific thickness of the knife. It forces the wood appart more aggressively causing it to spilt faster.
      It works so well that I worked with Schrade on an offshoot project....a "Super-Froe" batoning tool based on Jess-X geometery. So even if you hate Jess-X you can get a large kindling maker that's like a Jess-X with a flat end and a thin, straight handle. The ultimate unbreakable froe.

    My biggest (and only) complaint was the BS reason that Chris went with 1075 over 1095. Big mistake.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TurtleWolf Pack you think so? I thought that is was actually a really good idea.
      why would you prefer the jx to be in schrades 1095?

    • @turtlewolfpack6061
      @turtlewolfpack6061 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThePreppersBunkerOutdoors He claimed that he didnt trust Chinese 1095, when they have been making perfectly good 1095 for years that is easily just as good as any other. The choice to go with 1075 makes no sense as there are few, if any, Chinese knives in that steel so you can bet they have less experience with it and thus more likely for something to go wrong with the unknown metal.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TurtleWolf Pack well, with Schrade specifically, I know that they had two batches of 1095 that were really bad. (warped blades and broken blades and chipping etc)
      Now with 1075, 1075 with lower carbon content, is a tougher steel and it is easier to heat treat, but with the drawback of not holding an edge as long.
      For me personally, I would actually choose 1075 over 1095 for a blade this size. just for the toughness.

    • @turtlewolfpack6061
      @turtlewolfpack6061 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ThePreppersBunkerOutdoors see that is a valid argument that makes sense to me, but a bad batch of steel does not make a bad steel. Even a company like Spartan Blades or Eickhorn might get some bad steel but a lower volume maker would be more likely to catch it before it hit the shelf than a company like Shrade, especially during the time frame in question when they were desperately trying to meet consumer demand.
      Even the Ruger 10/22 rifle suffered recently during a shortage and Ruger turned out some pretty piss poor examples.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TurtleWolf Pack yeah, I totally agree. 1095 is not a bad steel, and Schrade is doing a better job with it now.
      if I were to have knives made in China or Taiwan, I would just want the simplest effective heat treat method for a steel. because anything that you can do to lower the odds of a mass screw up is worth it.
      with all that being said, I am really impressed with the 1075 on this jx. they could tell me that it was tin foil and I would just have to tip my hat to them, it turned out quite impressively, especially for the price.
