Good pencils are a must ! Especially if you want to draw seriously. And... I don't know about you when I get new art materials it makes me want to draw and paint even more ;)
I miss your classes Leila! I've just joined the community art gallery's art class, Drawing Fundamentals and the 1st class was using pencils. However the experienced teacher said she didn't know what the F or B, H stand for that she would ask the art shop next time 😅 so I'm so glad I'm ready to watch all your videos and excel in my art again under your guidance!!
Oh no 🙈 Is she an artist or just teaching? I actually had to cancel so many art classes because of lockdowns and restrictions. When you are back in Auckland you can come back for a class 😆it would be lovely to see you again!!
Man wish I knew this when I was still in primary to high school. Those "disappearing pencils" always end up being your last one you needed during a test and you gotta sharpen it awkwardly for like 10 minutes. The pencils with sliding graphite used to always amuse me in my younger school years🙂.
Sometimes we think we are saving money by purchasing cheap pencils but really you are spending more at the end of the day. I used to collect the pencil cores that would slide out and later use them is a mechanical pencil.
If you go to an art shop you will most likely find good quality stuff. But school students are usually stuck with cheap HB pencils and when they try to draw it becomes a problem
Hey Flower : - Yet more contact from N.W England...... A promise soon broken??!. Anyway, a brilliantly clear and informative tutorial on a "civilisation-changing" yet simple invention/impliment. I found out a few minutes ago where the term pencil "lead" came from - after a huge seam of pure graphite was found in the 16th century, 80 odd miles away from where I live, in the Borrowdale valley - within the fairly famous Lake District in Northern England (hence why the well known "Lakeland" pencil brand are named so.... "Derwent" pencils as they are now known are still made in the Borrowdale Valley - the expensive ones anyway??!). Metallurgists/Miners found what they thought was very similar to lead metal, rather than carbon that it really is, so they named this newly discovered material "Plumbago" - which is derived from the term Plumbum, which is latin for Lead. And I guess the term just stuck??. And - *saying this with dark (9B?!) humour attached* - anyone who sharpens pencils with a sharpener rather than a sharp blade (children excepted of course!), has a broken mind...... My Dad is/was an aerospace engineer, and showed me at a really early age how to get a really workable/useable pencil tip - teeep?, Sorry! - with a Stanley knife : - And I never use any other way...... Hey, I was wondering if you've ever done a video on stomp/tortillon techniques? I noticed that you use a different stomp than I do for blending and I was curious if I'm using the right one, or if it even matters.
@@LeilaAtaya absolutely, you have like this really big fat one and I just have a few different pencil sized ones. I'm just curious, how often do you clean them off? Sometimes I feel like the charcoal or graphite that's on them affects what I'm working on?
@@14ajencks Ok I see what you are talking about. It's the same thing the size is the only difference. If you are working on A5 sized drawings you can work fine with pencil sized smudge sticks but for larger works you might find it easier and quicker to use large ones. Also make sure to keep different set of sticks for graphite and charcoals. Your art will be a mess if you use one for both materials. The only reason you would want to clean them is if the stick is depositing more graphite than you need then you can use some sand-paper and clean it off by sanding the blenders. I just use few sticks and use cleaner ones for lighter areas and dirtier ones for darker ones. Hope it helps :)
