This video brings back old memories when being Catholic meant a lot more than just a name. Back in the day, before Vatican II when you said "I am a Roman Catholic" people automatically respected or hated you now things are different. I'm 76 and have seen it all.
Great documentary! As a Philadelphia Irish Catholic from Kensington who moved to the NJ suburbs in the 80's,, this put a lot of things into perspective. I never realized while growing up Catholic how large a role the Church and the Irish played in the city. It all makes more sense now seeing this film. Thank you!
In the late fifties I attended St. Philip's Neri school and did one year at St. Stanislaus. I am seventy now and I enjoyed this documentary so much. Thank you. Long live the Catholic Church.
I'm amazed that this video says it was uploaded 8 years ago but there are only 61 comments. Public interest really shows that what was in that wonderful video is no longer alive. I graduated from Nativity BVM in Port Richmond in 1977 and North Catholic in 1981. This video brought back many great memories.
My maternal side is from Swampoodle in North Philly. My grandmother would look at St. Columba Church, Bless herself, and then cross Judson Street. No matter how many times a day she went out, she did the sign of the cross.
This reminds me of my Grandmother...she has been a practicing Catholic all her life. I'm myself practice and believe in Mother worship Shaktism, of Sanatan Dharma. But this is amazing.
We are so challenged these days like incline Nostradamus Peter the Roman. Our Shepherds good league's vs their bad shepherd Grinch's team's. The suffering of our people crying Mercy
How anyone could think that Italians don't practice "real Catholicism" is beyond me. Rome is in Italy, the church has as its liturgical language the ancient Italian language of Latin, and if anything, it would be the groups from the fringes of the Catholic world which diverged from the real practices.
we are now in my late sixties I amstill coming up against cold in the winter most of my money going to medical expenses wish I could get oil to heat my house

I went to Our Lady OF Lourdes until med 3rd grade, 1965. I loved living there.

You mean how large a role Polish and Italian and French Catholics played…just as much as any “Irish catholic” bigot.
That was a great documentary on the history. Well done !

I am Catholic. I attended St. John Cantius in Bridesburg until 1992, Nazareth Academy until 1996, and Chestnut Hill College until 1998.

Well said. Lots of Irish Catholics were rural racists. Religion was as much about societal control as it was spiritual.

Catholic schools and church is dying in my hometown.
That's because nobody's proud to be Catholic anymore.
There will probably never be an Phila. Archbishop who's a cardinal again. That's proof of how unimportant Catholicism is in the Phila. area today.

We need a black pope
We do?
Why?
You should have a talk with God about that.
There already is one he is the head of the Jesuits.
We have a black pope the Jesuit is the black pope
