  • For NICU Awareness Month, we continue our series by helping nurses and trainees learn basic mechanical ventilation, part TWO. This is a two part lecture. In THIS video, which is PART TWO, we focus on discussing volume vs. pressure as well as non-invasive ventilation, such as NIV, NIPPV, and CPAP. I will briefly describe high-frequency ventilation and then end the video with a step-by-step instruction on understanding blood gases. If you missed PART I, that video focuses on SIMV and AC modes. Learn about synchronized intermittent mechanical ventilation (SIMV) and assist control (AC), in easy to understand terms and examples.ENJOY!

Thanks doctor! What a wonderful video. I will appreciate if you can make another video on how to interpret gases and make changes on the ventilation with few examples please. Thanks again!

Please make a video on paO2. We recently had a cardiac baby that had to be transferred out to a higher level of care.

Does your facility use NAVA? We use is frequently and it’s a love/hate relationship among the nurses. If you do use it or are familiar would love a video!

Thanks for your question. Where I am currently we do not use it. However, where I did my training, we did use it occasionally. It has its use, but have yet to see amazing results that would require a change in practice. Maybe more studies will show this. I will add NAVA on my list of things to discuss. For other topics, please visit my Instagram account @thenicudoc and follow me. I post many times a day on cool and education topics.. thank you!
