Agreed 100%.. all killer, no filler-one of the few albums where each song seems better than the last, and hearing 1 song by itself isn't as satisfying without hearing the track you know is up next on the album.. each year the number of those "set it and forget it" albums, with no weak tracks to skip passed, are seemingly dwindling, as albums lose out to streamed singles, or music videos... Makes me feel old saying shit like that, but it's unfortunately very true.. 👴🦻🤘
Amazing to see some people actually react to one of my favorite bands of all time. Heavily underrated, love your channel guys. Much love from Sweden! Btw i also loved the opening when Judson played some Weezer on the piano.
I've always thought At the Gates, and melodic death metal in general, is very classical music-inspired. The chords move like Bach but it's shrouded in heaviness. Love it.
My favorite part of this song is after the solo when it's just vocals and drums, and he is screaming his absolute ass off and you can hear all the spit hitting the mic and everything. Magical.
Always interesting to get different perspective on things. Especially with bands and songs like this that i have listen sooo many times. Really like your videos, keep em coming. I'm here in freezing Finland (about -37 Celsius so -35 F) trying to unfreeze my plumbing while jamming to this. So thanks for making this shitty day a bit better 😁
One of the great albums in metal history! Very nice you could find some enjoyment in this track. Would be cool to do something by in flames from the same era, maybe Moonshield or Jester's Dance like you suggested.
Mors Principium Est would be awesome, the songs Pure, The Unborn and Leader of the Titans are my favourites! also the band Synthetic Breed and their album Perpetual Motion Machine, the whole album is amazing! Love the videos!
Love your picks, spent my teenage years listening to this album constantly. Opened the "gate" to all kind of melodic Swedish death metal bands, eventually Dark Tranquillity became my favorite band for a few years. Best song on the Slaughter of the Saul is Suicide Nation in my opinion, I was really surprised by Judson's reaction, didn't expect him to like it :)
The first time I heard this ATG-SOtS album was 1998 when I started getting addicted to the Gothenburg sound. If you want a little bit of a blackened version of this kind of music, then try listening to In Thy Dreams - The Gate Of Pleasure. I dont doubt you'll love the first song "into infinity"
For some reason many of the Gothenburg death metal guys were into Kyuss! I remember them playing Welcome to the sky valley and other Kyuss albums for us.
Saw them in Chicago when they first reunited and played SotS start to finish. Never seen the House of Blues go so wild. Tbf, the openers were Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste, and Darkest Hour. To say the audience was primed is an understatement.
SotS is a landmark album. Very consistent and not one bad song on the record. Speaking of ATG, hey Richard, The Haunted- Bullet Hole. BTW, nice Exhorder - Slaughter In The Vatican tee.
Well, since Judson mentioned he liked the cymbal work, I'm thinking he might also like Mgla's Exercises in Futility V I would say I'm a cymbal guy, easy to ring all my bells 🤣🤣
I’ve been all over these videos for the last month or two and it strikes me that J is getting more appreciation for the rhythmic component of metal that we tend to ignore as piano players. If you want to go hard into sideways counts, Car Bomb rips and I think it’s probably time.
I remember seeing At The Gates supporting Behemoth ages ago and they were amazing. I think this album was responsible for creating the whole industrial metal and metalcore prototype riff.
I remember having a gf that didn't get death metal, and i just improved out an upbeat 'bom bom bom bom bum bum bum bum bom bum bom bum bom bum badda bum' along to At The Gates ...' clearly alluding to non-death metal and that's what i still do when someone says they don't understand death metal
Check out the doc with "studio fredman" and how they made this album........the little shoplifter...... DAM! i relly wrote this before the comments.......you now REALLY need to see the doc......and about that snare!!!!!! And the little brother of cource plays in Arch Enemy EDIT again :) The Haunted.....the band Anders Björler and brothe went to form........HATE SONG!!
Love this video. Can we get a deathcore reaction? Shadow of Intent - Gravesinger is a nice start to some deathcore. Anyways love the content keep the videos coming.
"What is this chaos, sounds familiar, its like something we should not talk about but it is real... and then the chorus or what ever melodic beatdown starts and my emotions fly like a bat from hell ready to drive a car 300mph without any mistakes and a smiling". I would describe my feeling about the record when I first started to like it. One of all time great albums and Im not what you call as a metalhead when it comes to music taste. Ofc I like Megadeth and Pantera, but thats like saying "AC/DC and ABBA are good bands".
Slaughter of the soul is one of the best albums ever made. From that to another of the few perfect albums ever made, the album that captures the melancholy of the north and makes up at least 50% of the dna of every swede, not to say the musical foundation in Swedish music. From the father of the drummer of Manowar and Hammerfall, it does not get more Swedish metal than this: th-cam.com/video/-pZOcVvbEhw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=H6gjjA8ZrukiZRLb A real treat for Judson to analyze
Maybe it's time to meet 5 beautiful ladies in high heels and dresses playing classic heavy metal? For starters, I recommend the song Break the Wall from their earlier albums. Boasting over 70 hit singles, they won Best New Metal Band at the Metal Hammer Awards in 2018. The girls play heavy, thrash, power and prog metal, they also have some beautiful ballads. Break the wall th-cam.com/video/5Pc0XK0lNmU/w-d-xo.html or Nameless warrior th-cam.com/video/Dl29tiJCbNM/w-d-xo.html
Please do "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" by Ne Obliviscaris. That's a beautiful Prog Metal song that's so interesting that it's been studied at Sydney's Conservatorium of Music!
One of the greastest Gothenburg melodic death there is. Also one of my favorite singers and drummers as well! Great stuff! PLEASE>>>JAGUAR GOD - MASTODON>>>PLEASE....
Great reaction! But the title track of Entombed's Swedish old skool death masterpiece "Left Hand Path" is vastly superior to this At The Gates track! They should make a video to react, analyze the aforementioned song...The excellent pianist would be amazed, impressed, "ecstatic"...Greetings from Brazil!
I think a good album for introducing Judson to In Flames would be "Colony" instead of the earlier "The Jester Race." I love both albums, but Colony was when In Flames started incorporating more rock and electronic elements into their music, but it is also early enough in that experiment that they still retain all the folk and metal influences of their early career. It also has more pronounced, mid to high vocals rather than the low growls which Judson doesn't appreciate as much. The tracks "Colony" and "Ordinary Story" have survived the test of time, as does "Zombie Inc" and "Scorn." For me, while I love their early catalogue, I think they really peaked with Colony as a band. Everything leading up to it is was great and unique, from the EPs with Stanne on vocals, to the early Anders years with The Jester Race and Whoracle, but they showed the most accurate vision of "what makes all eras of In Flames still In Flames" with Colony. Clayman was great too, but I thought it was a slight step down after Colony... I can't say I enjoy most of their catalogue after Clayman. Basically the entire Colony lineup, minus Anders, but with Mikael Stanne (from Dark Tranquillity) on vocals and instead of Bjorn, one of the more recent In Flames guitarists formed a band called "The Halo Effect." They just released an album a year or so ago. It's actually quite good at recapturing that early era of "the Gothenburg sound." At the Gates and talking about the rest of the Gothenburg scene really takes me back decades. It's hard to believe it's been that long since those CDs were blaring in my headphones as I walked to class in a snowstorm. That music sure made enduring such a storm a lot easier.
A classic album. Not sure what version of it this is or it's the upload, but the vocals are unclear and down in the mix. I have the original on CD and I bought an reissue on LP on Record Store Day. The LP sounded right, I'm sure the cd is the same. The Beautiful Wound would have been a good choice, but...... it's a capital crime not to introduce someone to ATG with The Burning Darkness
I just shared “cold” as my “metal song of the day” last week. I think that’s a better option to start someone who’s never heard this album either cold or the first song or my fav #4 under a serpent sun ☀️
This is one of the greatest albums in aggressive music history
Right, gold age of metal, early '90.... 👍👍
*Aggressive Music* 😂
I agree 100%.
The Reign In Blood of the 90's. Masterpiece.
one of the most important metal albums ever made
💯
Fuck yeah!
Maybe yes...
The older I grow, the more I appreciate this album. Pure energy.
One the best melodic death metal albuns ever.
If Judson enjoyed that song, he May as well enjoy the whole album. Melodeath at its finest.
Amazing to see some people actually react to one of my favorite bands of all time.
Heavily underrated, love your channel guys.
Much love from Sweden!
Btw i also loved the opening when Judson played some Weezer on the piano.
I agree. This album is one of the best. Much love from Iceland 🇮🇸 🤘👊🙏🤙
The In Flames album is called the Jester Race and is also one of the greatest albums in music history. Jester's Dance is an instrumental track
Yes, do Inflames!
"Artifacts of the black rain" or "Lord Hypnos" would be great choices
I lie in your soothing arms LORD HYPNOS!!
Jotun
Moonshield
I've always thought At the Gates, and melodic death metal in general, is very classical music-inspired. The chords move like Bach but it's shrouded in heaviness. Love it.
Agree 100
I thought sometimes it sounds like classical Spanish guitar from Spain… particularly Southern and Central Spain
Metal, especially melodic death metal is considered cannon (clasdical music) I'm proud yo have been one of the first to write a paper on the subject.
My favorite part of this song is after the solo when it's just vocals and drums, and he is screaming his absolute ass off and you can hear all the spit hitting the mic and everything. Magical.
Richard is wearing a shirt from one of the best thrash metal bands out there. Exhorder is soooo underrated!
Say it louder for the people in the back! 🤘
RICHARD IS WEARING A SHIRT FROM ONE OF THE BEST THRASH METAL BANDS OUT THEEEEEEEERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that loud enough?...🗣@@Greatmeasures
😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 my second favorite song from this band, my other favorite song is blinded by fear by this band.
Holy Molly! The godfathers of melodeath! SOTS is one of the main reasons I found inconditional love to metal overall! Thanks for the reaction, guys!
Thanks for reminding me how great this album is. Been collecting dust for too long.
I met these guys on this tour , the singer and maybe a bass or guitar player .Super good dudes
Hell yes MPE. "In Torment," "The Ghost," "Into the Dark," "Apprentice of Death" and pretty much that whole album are also great
Such a good band. I’ll put them on the list. Thanks!
One of the greatest songs of all time!
This album and song are legendary. They insipred most modern metal. Not to mention its the inspiration for metal core in general.
Landmark album, one of the best Melodic Death Metal albums ever released and probably the better of the big Swedish (Gothenburg Metal) bands.
Dark Tranquility next!
Nice to see y'all having fun already in the new year!
Id love to see Dead Eternity by In Flames off of The Jesters Race, absolute underrated classic.
I love Whoracle yessir
One of my all time fav albums 🤘
Holy shit this is amazing
The first time I heard this ATG-SOtS album was 1998 when I started getting addicted to the Gothenburg sound. If you want a little bit of a blackened version of this kind of music, then try listening to In Thy Dreams - The Gate Of Pleasure. I dont doubt you'll love the first song "into infinity"
I saw them live a couple years ago at a festival and they played this entire album from start to finish. It was incredible.
I saw them live whilst they were touring this album. Unforgettable experience.
For some reason many of the Gothenburg death metal guys were into Kyuss! I remember them playing Welcome to the sky valley and other Kyuss albums for us.
It's the groove.
You guys gotta do Under A Serpent Sun. That song that this awesome melodic bridge that sort of reminds of a megadeth 2 step riff.
Really should make him react to Death, songs like Voice of the Soul or Story To Tell. Masterpieces if you ask me.
Judson rocking the buckaroo banzai look.
Absolute classic album. And a banger of a track.
What an awesome reference
Saw them in Chicago when they first reunited and played SotS start to finish. Never seen the House of Blues go so wild.
Tbf, the openers were Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste, and Darkest Hour. To say the audience was primed is an understatement.
Classic extreme metal album - splendid choice!
SotS is a landmark album.
Very consistent and not one bad song on the record.
Speaking of ATG, hey Richard, The Haunted- Bullet Hole.
BTW, nice Exhorder - Slaughter In The Vatican tee.
Maybe Leech too
Good song and seemed to be over way too soon. Definitely checking out more of their stuff.
yes i love you guys
Judson you understand more than you think. And metal is awesome!
Well, since Judson mentioned he liked the cymbal work, I'm thinking he might also like Mgla's Exercises in Futility V
I would say I'm a cymbal guy, easy to ring all my bells 🤣🤣
I’ve been all over these videos for the last month or two and it strikes me that J is getting more appreciation for the rhythmic component of metal that we tend to ignore as piano players. If you want to go hard into sideways counts, Car Bomb rips and I think it’s probably time.
Best melodic death album every
That reaction caught me completely off guard lmao
Great measures!
I remember seeing At The Gates supporting Behemoth ages ago and they were amazing. I think this album was responsible for creating the whole industrial metal and metalcore prototype riff.
saw BEHEMOTH supporting AT HE GATES couple years ago w/ WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM opening-very nice
Something off the Condemned album by Confessor !
The drumming on that album is totally unique! Stephen Shelton is a genius! 👌
good album, except for the vocals, lol
@@triumphtinltcomicdg I have grown to love the vocals over time... 🤗
Exhorder!
I'll be seeing them at Wacken 2025 playing that album
banger album full stop
I remember having a gf that didn't get death metal, and i just improved out an upbeat 'bom bom bom bom bum bum bum bum bom bum bom bum bom bum badda bum' along to At The Gates ...' clearly alluding to non-death metal
and that's what i still do when someone says they don't understand death metal
Love that Exhorder shirt, Richard. When are we gonna get to some Death?
Have you checked out Dismember - Like an everflowing stream?
Agreed. This is the blueprint for metal banbds in the 2000s
2000’s? This came out in 1995
@NEKROMONICON. Um yeah... hence why metal bands in the 2000s used it as a blueprint.
Give the guy some proper metal like that. He knows nothing yet.
Check out the doc with "studio fredman" and how they made this album........the little shoplifter......
DAM! i relly wrote this before the comments.......you now REALLY need to see the doc......and about that snare!!!!!!
And the little brother of cource plays in Arch Enemy
EDIT again :) The Haunted.....the band Anders Björler and brothe went to form........HATE SONG!!
Judson commenting on the rimming instantly reminded me of that same clip. All in one take too.
A totem of it's kind.
Fuck yeah! 😆
I love your channel. Please proceed… Richard. (More of Type o negative please)
You forgot to mention THE most important band/album in the formation of the melodic death metal sound: Carcass: 'Heartwork'.... 🤗
Do December flower - In flames
Man you guys really need to do As I Lay Dying I he would really like them
hoooooooooooly crap I didn't expect this song woooooooo
Pleeeease do Blinded By Fear next!
Oh nice. In Flames next?
Love this video. Can we get a deathcore reaction? Shadow of Intent - Gravesinger is a nice start to some deathcore. Anyways love the content keep the videos coming.
Carcass Heartwork came out before Slaughter of the Soul and that's the og of melodic death metal.
Another excellent song.
Hey! At The Gates is one of the greatest. You should do Entombed, out of hand. The pioneers of death ‘n roll.
"What is this chaos, sounds familiar, its like something we should not talk about but it is real... and then the chorus or what ever melodic beatdown starts and my emotions fly like a bat from hell ready to drive a car 300mph without any mistakes and a smiling". Hey richard, check out dance of ixtab by carcass music video.
Coroner❤
maybe something from the first two albums?
Please react to Suicidal Angels - When The Lions Die! Newly realeased great thrash metal!
Please do Cold by At the Gates
moreswedishmetal,candlemass,sabaton,andmuchmore!
I didn't even know they're swedish and i have lived in sweden my whole life
🤪
Blinded by fear is my fav! :D
Now please react to Equilibrium - Kurzes Epos!
Maybe it's time to meet 5 beautiful ladies in high heels and dresses playing classic heavy metal? For starters, I recommend the song Break the Wall from their earlier albums. Yes Blinded by fear and Cold are a couple of other good tracks on that album.
DISFEAR Live the Storm
You guys should do DNR by Testament
Yes! Many great Testament tunes.
If you are up to suggestions, I would highly recommend the song Of Beast and Worms by Allegaeon. And i say this as an avid at the gates fan.
My "gate" way into deathmetal
Yeah this is cute and all, and it's a classic. But You have to do Carcass too now. Any song from 'Heartwork' will do.
Mortal Coil!!!
Agree, Great Measures needs to try some Carcass.
do hypocrisy slippin away!!
Yes !!! 🤘
you might like punk rock if you like a steady snare
it would be good an interpretation of Into the Dead Sky
Please do "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" by Ne Obliviscaris. That's a beautiful Prog Metal song that's so interesting that it's been studied at Sydney's Conservatorium of Music!
