I highly recommend the guide they offer. It was very informative and easy to use. We stayed in Rapid City two nights and we able to do a lot of the activities in the guide. Favorite by far was Custer State Park. I recommend going by the visitor center there to see were the bison herd was last seen. The park ranger told us exactly how to find them, which was on one of the side roads.
We just went and it was beautiful!! My parents came to California for a week from Mexico on Vacation and we decided to go to South Dakota to go visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial since my parents have always wanted to see it in person. Just wanted to say thank you so much your video really helped us out a lot!! We had an amazing time even though we kept getting dirty looks for speaking Spanish and got told 3 times to speak English and one guy told us to either speak English or to get out of there country because we were on a patriotic memorial zone and to show some respect by speaking English 🙁 we tried to explain that my parents do not live in the US they are just tourists so they do not know English so we all had to speak Spanish around them so we can communicate but he didn’t care. But that was ok we did not let that ruin our trip because there was a lot more friendlier people that were very nice to me and my parents😊
I apologize for my fellow citizens. There's been so much mentions with undocumented immigrants people for get American is still a great place to visit and we should be kind and welcoming to tourists agian I apologize i hope you parents come back in learned a little Spanish w hen I decided to go take a vacati9n in jalisco to make things easier for me plus my eldest is m8xed with white Hispanic ans Spanish
Wonderful. You guys do a really good job of not only detailing the different do's and don'ts, but you put a lot of necessary time into the video production which is appreciated. Keep it up .
I am winding my trip down and heading back to North Georgia and after watching your videos I realized I missed some things, I will have to do this trip again! Thanks so much for the effort and enthusiasm you both bring!!!
Hi there! I stumbled across this video while searching for Sturgis videos since I am going to the Sturgis rally for the first time in 2023 (Yes. I will be one of those thousands of bikers during the time to avoid going, LOL). I just want to say what a great job you did in making this video. My group that I am going with has been to the rally before but I enjoy doing my own research and this video is very informative on the area. There may be a few days that I am on my own and this gives me plenty of ideas on what to do and where to go. Thank you for taking the time to help everyone to get the most enjoyment out of their vacations.
Your videos are fun, informative, easy to follow.... downright awesome! We are doing our Black Hills/Devil's Tower/West Yellowstone RV Camping trip in late May-early June. We've never been and cannot wait! Thank you for helping us plan our bucket list camping trip!
Thanks for the memories. My summers were spent in Spearfish Canyon 1949-1957... we were able to take all the backroads and were thrilled to find one that took us up the back of Rushmore right in front of Washington's nose...it is huge! All those towns were regular stops. Those were wonderful years and even better, there were no mosquitos in Spearfish Canyon...yea! Next time take in Cosmos mystery site. Kiddos love it. Can't say enough about the great times we had in the Black Hills of South Dakota and in Medora, North Dakota
I am from SD and I bring people to the Blackhills. Your video is very informative. I appreciate you doing this video so others may know about our underrated state of South Dakota.
Glad I watched this. I saw some areas that my family would NOT want to see. Don't want to take time away from places we would enjoy, so many sites here were way too crowded for me. We're going this summer, 2023 for a few weeks crossing S.D. Wyoming, Montana.
I've been to Wall Drug four times over the years. Never had a problem, but never went during prime vacation (July 4 to Labor Day) time. For a central location, I recommend Palmer Gulch Lodge especially if you have kids. The lodge features rooms, rustic log to deluxe cabins, large KOA campground, restaurant, trail rides, playgrounds, bus rides to Mt. Rushmore, and a chuckwagon dinner. For the romance, solitude, & high-rollers stay at one of the Custer State Park lodges. Consider going when Deadwood his holding their Wild Bill Hickock & Days of 76.If going there from Nebraska's I-80, be sure to check out Carhenge and Fort Robinson State Park.
Thanks for the video! It has been 14 years since we have been to the black hills and are going this summer. This brought back so many memories and really helped us plan our trip.
I recommend the 1880 train. Done it at least three times with no problems. Take it from either end, get off and peruse the town. You'll have about 1.5 - 2 hours when you can catch the next train back. I have to disagree regarding Wall Drug dining. Been there three times with no problem for lunch in June prior to 4 July.
I absolutely love Mt Rushmore/ Black Hills!! We visited there about 5 years ago on September 11th. They had a special program that evening with some of the first responders from Ground Zero. That was super touching. Deadwood was very interesting as well!! Thank you for sharing all of those fun area’s!!! It’s especially fun to hear from Matt & Cheryl!!! 😁😊😃🥰
I got 3 of the 4 presidents! Missed Jefferson. We're planning a trip to the Badlands. After watching your video, I think we're gonna have to stay longer because there's more there that I'm interested in doing than I thought. Thanks for sharing your experiences and these places!
You guys are just so sweet and nice I had to subscribe! Thanks for the info… still dreaming of making a trip from Florida to see the Badlands/Black Hills and Yellowstone.
great video..we are visiting rapid city in late october from ontario canada..for a demolition derby event GoldRush..we are driving all the way there..after the demolition derby event of 5 nights we plan on staying at keystone to branch out and see custer state park and do some of those great scenic drives......during the week in rapid city we plan on seeing mount Rushmore as an day trip..and also another day trip to see sturgis and deadwood.......bad lands we hope to take in on our road to rapid city..... question? i will be traveling that long distance that late in the year with a brand new set of good winter tires on our awd suv...what are the chances of snow the last weel of october and early november ?? now of course i am use to driving in the snow here in northern ontario,,so no biggie lol
I wish weather was predictable and we could give you a definite answer but we can't. I would assume there's a good chance a show storm will have happened or could happen at that time but probably not so big a storm that it's not navigable. Good luck!
Wonderful informative video! We had to cancel our trip rving our west this year due to gas uncertainties. We hope we can come next summer! I missed Jefferson :/
Great video. I loved the trivia. I did this in 2019 and want to go back. I was there 50 years ago too. I love the Black Hills. Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway (Needles Tunnel) are my favorites. Bison chili at Mt Rushmore was delicious. The Badlands were better than expected. Spearfish Canyon was beautiful and I lost satellite radio reception in that narrow canyon. I was hoping to see some aliens at Devil's Tower, but I was safe. Roosevelt NP is worth the drive. I visited both the south unit and the north unit. In the north unit the bison outnumbered the tourists. Seclusion. And the Cannonball Concretions are unique formations. Deadwood was a great place to visit along with Mount Moriah Cemetery (Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity). So much to see and do there. Time to return.
We really enjoy your guys videos, and we love how you guys do these things as a couple and family 😁 is it possible to just purchase the audio guide by itself?
Hi Matt and Cheryl, love your videos and just bought your guide. When you recommend staying in Custer, would that include the 'Under Canvas' lodgings near Mt Rushmore? Would that give me that 'being in the mountains' feel Cheryl was referring to? Also just wondering generally if that would be a good place to stay. Thanks :)
Depends on what you want to do. There will probably still be snow, hiking trails will be closed, and many roads could still be closed in Custer State Park. If you're passing through and your trip isn't changeable, you can still make the most of it, but if you are planning a trip there, I'd go May or later.
We just posted a guide for the Black hills on our website. It includes the Badlands. See wereintherockies.com/black-hills-packages/ We also did a short video on it: th-cam.com/video/gqFurr6SjUM/w-d-xo.html
You have been misled. Real Chislic is cubed sheep on a skewer and deep fat fried with Garlic salt. Years ago a favorite South Dakota bar food. Beats pickled eggs and pigs feet!
Summer is the busiest, so we recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons (late spring and fall) when people with kids are in school. Here's an article we have written about the best time to visit Mount Rushmore: wereintherockies.com/best-time-to-visit-mount-rushmore/
The motorcycle rally is the biggest money maker for SD. You tended to down talk it, and Im pretty sure the residents of SD wouldn't appreciate that. The 1880 Train, is a landmark. sorry you gave it a thumbs down. You missed several really scenic areas, maybe next time you're there, you can do some more research.

Thanks Dana! And that’s a perfect idea, to ask the Ranger where the bison are!

Great places to go out west. We saw several of them. Would definitely go back again & see some of sites we missed.
Definitely!
lol yall are so LDS but it's adorable I'll be using a lot of tips from this video the first 2 weeks of September coming up thanks 😊 😂

Headed back to the Badlands and Black Hills in June for the 5th year in a row.
The Stables at Palmer Gulch have a fun trail ride/chuck wagon dinner show. Expensive but worth it.
Thanks for sharing.

Wow , I didn't realize it , but I need to go back and explore more things to do
You should. There is so much to see and do!
Thanks for this. We will be there in June. 😊
Hope you enjoy it!
Enjoyed your video. We climbed Black Elk Peak, last year. What a beautiful hike.
Thanks for sharing. Black Elk Peak was amazing and our teenaged sons liked it too

Where was the place you went in Spearfish Canyonto okay in the water with your kids? We're going in Sept. Your video is a fabulous help!
It's called the Devil's Bathtub. Thanks for watching.

Please tell me more about the swimming spot at spearfish canyon! That looks amazing! What is the trail called?
It's amazing! The swimming hole is called Devil's Bathtub and that's the name of the trail as well.
We really enjoy your guys videos, and we love how you guys do these things as a couple and family 😁 is it possible to just purchase the audio guide by itself?
We are working on that! I’m going to put the audio guides out as separate ebooks/audiobooks in the future.
Fun fact, Custer is as high in elevation as Denver.
Is that real life? 😮
@Brogrl Custer is 5400ft.
Thanks :)
Yes, that would be a good location for sure!
I can’t speak for under canvas specifically, but the area is good 👍
I missed Thomas Jefferson on Mt. Rushmore. The other 3 I got right. LOL. Thanks for your videos!
You’re welcome! Good job on getting 3 right!
Really well done guys. Very informative . We’re doing it in late February … I’m guessing most things are closed?
Yes, a lot of the tourism stuff won't be open.
Thanks for the video! Thoughts on visiting the Black Hills in mid-March?
Depends on what you want to do. There will probably still be snow, hiking trails will be closed, and many roads could still be closed in Custer State Park. If you're passing through and your trip isn't changeable, you can still make the most of it, but if you are planning a trip there, I'd go May or later.

the sad part about that "bike" trail is there is nothing listing the history or the railroad that once was there. more lost history.

The black hills are sacred to the native Americans and should be returned to them.
At least the natives aren't killing each other over it anymore. Geez, there's always one...
If we didn't take it, someone else would have. Perhaps the natives would rather be under Chinese or Russian rule instead?
