I heard this song for the first time earlier this year and was captured by the poetry in the lyrics as well as the amazing melodies. I love the references to Narnia and LOTR, but especially how it inspires me as a Christian on this voyage of life. Plus the beat and tune sounds like an awesome sea shanty. Thanks so much for making and sharing this song with us. God bless you guys!
This has recently become one of those songs, that makes me happy and nostalgic at the same time, while bringing back some happy memories. But unlike most of them, I actually really like the music itself as well. #goodbyehgy

I read an interview and Dave and Licia said this song's inspiration was a conversation between J.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis www.classicaldifference.com/the-gray-havens/
I wrote this short story based on this song as part of a writing prompt, hope you enjoy! The ship rolled over wave after wave as the wind picked up like the growling beginnings of a lion's roar. The men scurried all over the deck, tying ropes and securing barrels. One of the sailors dashed up to the captain and shouted over the roaring waves and whistling wind, "A storm's picking up, sir! We should give the sails more slack so we don't lose the mast!" The captain shook his head, his beard dripping from the sea spray. "We need to keep our pace!" His voice was strong despite three days at sea shouting orders. "May I ask what for? We don't even know where we're going!" "No," the captain replied, taking his piercing blue eyes off the water ahead and looking into the eyes of the other man. "But we know what we're looking for and we haven't found it yet, have we?" "But we don't even know if it exists!" "Not for certain, no, but we'll look for it, or die trying. That's what you volunteered for and there’s no backing out now." The sailor nodded in agreement and left the captain, running over to help drag a trunk below decks. The captain reached into his breast pocket and fingered a folded piece of paper as if only to be reassured that it was real and safe. After a pause he pulled it out, its surface shimmering, almost metallic looking. He studied the notes painstakingly inscribed on it, making up a tune. THE tune. It made him think of home and he suddenly, vividly imagined the royals in the palace. Every one of them, queens and kings, hearing that song in their dreams every night for the past year and waking up in feverish sweat, called by the song, but not knowing what it meant. He remembered the day when he had gone before the queens and kings and had volunteered to be the captain of the fleet sent to find the song. To lead a ship out into the unknown to uncover the source of that haunting melody. A song, beginning low and slow brought him out of his thoughts. Not the song on the paper in his hands, but a song from home, a celebratory song sung by the people of his country when heroes returned to their homeland. One of the men, standing in the middle of the deck, was singing it out through the storm-charged air. He no doubt was imagining it being sung for them when they would arrive back home with the long awaited answer for their kings and queens, with the source of the song from their dreams. More of the crew joined in and their song wove up on the wind. Ooohh... Oohhh... Welcome back, welcome home Ooohh... Oohhh... Cease to fight, cease to roam The silver soldiers have returned Burial wreathes were never burned Great honor to the very blessed Much feasting, singing and much rest Ooohh... Oohhh... Songs and cheers, wines and toasts Ooohh... Oohhh... Tales of glory, honors and boasts Families welcome you back well The tower rings its silver bell Yelling, 'Victory, victory!' Ringing it's sound of liberty Ooohh... Oohhh... The journey's over, the battle won Ooohh... Oohhh... Welcome home, and cease to run... As the song faded, whisked away by the storm, the captain heard it, almost as if in response to the singing of the crew. A hauntingly beautiful melody began quietly, coming in fragments and echoes, floating between the winds from across the waters. It was the same tune heard by the kings and queens in their dreams. The song was found, now all that was left was to follow it.
Really good! According to a live version of this song, it's based on a discussion between CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, and your story, with a little more detail for Lewis or a lot more detail for Tolkien, could fit into either one of their works!
You know my ex made a playlist for me when we first started dating that had this song in it. Decided to listen to it today over a year later after breaking up (mainly because it is stuck in my head and was a good song). I thought I’d be hurting listening to it. I’m not surprisingly.
Whenever I refind this song it makes me smile, it's popped back up every once in a while for the last several years and I always forget how much I love it
+Nathan Beard Personally, I've been trying to memorize the speech it starts out with. I know it's not the whole thing, I've actually got that on another video, but it's not nearly as visually interesting.

Joel The Hole its not necessarily a christian song as it is a much as a song written by a christian band. Its about the friendship between C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and how they helped each other grow stronger in their Christian faith.
There's also the fact that the imagery of a ship sailing in search of a treasure hails back to C.S. Lewis' _Voyage of the Dawn Treader_ and the the image of silver chairs also references C.S. Lewis' _The Silver Chair_ in which the Prince of Narnia is trapped in an ensorcelled silver chair. _The Chronicles of Narnia_ was written as part allegory, part re-imagining of the Christian narrative as how it might be re-enacted in a fantasy world; there are even spots in the books _Prince Caspian_ , _The Voyage of the Dawn Treader_ , _The Silver Chair_ , and _The Last Battle_ where Lewis directly hints that Aslan, the Creator of Narnia, is the representation of Jesus in that world, and _The Last Battle_ is written with very large amounts of Judeo-Christian apocalyptic imagery as well as undertones of salvation theology.
One time Lewis and Tolkien were discussing what at that time Lewis referred to as "the christian mythology", and Lewis described this and all myths as "lies, breathed through silver". Tolkien immediately contradicted this statement, and soon after wrote a poem which he titled Mythopoeia, in which he said that myths to some extent convey the truth and are certainly not lies. In his essay On Fairy Stories, Tolkien referenced this conversation and quoted part of the Mythopoeia, and later stated that in the story of Jesus myth became fact. Tolkien, as a Christian, believed the gospels to be an accurate historical account, and also recognized a similarity between events in folklore and the good news of Jesus, making His story the place where myth was incarnated into fact. Silver is based off of this story. It speaks of the creation of myths, of Man's search for God and for truth, of the all-conquering power of the truth, of myths reflecting truth, of the power of truth to free us from the things which hold us back from knowing God as our Father and Savior, and the change which the Gospel brings in us. Shortly after his conversation with Tolkien, Lewis gave his life to Christ. Later he wrote many things which not only embraced as reflecting the truth but also invented mythologies. If it were not for the influence of Tolkien and of Jesus, we would not have The Chronicles of Narnia and other well-loved classics. I hope that you also realize the Truth and let it change your life.
