In addition, the steam locomotive seen at 7:03 is the Rock Island #1961, a 2-8-0 that spent a lot of time around Topeka. The RI & UP shared track from KC-Topeka.

The segment beginning at 2:15 is the former Rock Island RR yard just west of Topeka Blvd. on the south side of the river.

My mom and dad lived in downtown KCK in a 2nd floor apartment in1951. They were on vacation at Yellowstone when the flood hit, so were unable to save any of their belongings. Their downstairs neighbor put my mom's new Singer sewing machine (& cabinet) on top of the kitchen table attempting to save it, and they were able to save it. My mom described the horrible mess they faced when they returned. My sister still has that sewing machine to this day.

in Armordale in K.C Ks. a 40' wall of water came down the Kansas (or Kaw River) and it couldnt make the bend into the Missouri River at Kansas City. All the Bottoms in K C Ks. and N. K C , Mo. and K C , Mo. flooded. The K.C Stock yards and many animals drowned.

I remember my Dad taking us down to the Kaw river in Lawrence to see the trees washed up under the bridge and the awful smell after the water receded

My dad's employer-Bendix Aviation sent him (our family) to visit victims & take money to help. I remember a family living in a railroad car.
