UP Big Boy 4014 south of Bonner Springs, Kansas
มุมมอง 1115 ปีที่แล้ว
After waiting for 40 years to see a Big Boy in operation - today was the day! We had picked the hill out for a good long view asafter 40 years - I did not want a "fleeting encounter" of mere seconds down next to the tracks. This is the cell phone movie on a beautiful day. Another item checked off the bucket list.

Another piece of 16mm film from the estate of Ted Sexton, Leavenworth. This is one of many Christmas scenes, the house seems to have been full of friends and family. The family home was built in about the 1880's and Ted lived his entire life here except when in the Army. This is believed to show Ted Sexton Sr in the checked suit and Ted's grandfather in the black suit at the end of the table. A...

    1:18 Is that bridge the one on Gage Blvd. that goes over the Shunganunga Creek? The house that my husband & I own is 1-2 blocks west of the tornado path, near 29th & Gage; since it wasn't destroyed by the tornado, it’s one of the oldest in the neighborhood (it was built in 1959).

      @@mgmlvks1627 I have a photo of the tornado track through Topeka, & I'm pretty sure the creek only intersects with the track in 2 places: on Gage Blvd & just west & north of 6th & Branner. Since the photo has what’s left of trees in it, & there are no trees around the creek & 6th & Branner (it’s just east of downtown), & guessing it IS where the creek crosses Gage.

    I have lived south of Mt. St. Helens for all of my life, near Vancouver, Washington. These photos are from the July 22, 1980 eruption. Actually, there were two that day, and this is the second one. I was fortunate to have seen both of them. The photos were likely taken somewhere south, southwest of the mountain, likely in the northern part of Clark County, Washington, judging from the hills. Hope that this information is helpful. :)

    is there any way to remove that awful stabilization effect?

    • @mgmlvks1627
      @mgmlvks1627 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if was stabilized - it may be original camera shake or my filming methods at the time - will try to find the original copies and/or reshoot the film (at some point).

    • @amtrak706
      @amtrak706 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely not camera shake - it looks like TH-cam applied its stabilization filter. You can tell by the boundaries of the film moving around at either side. Even if the original film is shaky, that’s still way better than with the stabilization filter applied. It’s always great to see old treasures like this on TH-cam so it’s a shame when their awful stabilization gets applied.

    • @mgmlvks1627

    Great video! My Mother was 7, she, my Aunt (12), and Grandma and Grandpa went to a neighbor’s house who had a basement. My Grandpa was on the front porch, watching, while the others were in the basement. He joined them after he witnessed the debris flying around. That house sustained minor damage, thankfully! Then my 2 other aunts, my Mother’s older sister and sister-in-law were in the direct path. My Aunt was working at a restaurant, close to Washburn University, everyone had fled to the basement and were screaming at her to get down there. She was so concerned about the cash register so she was the last to go...she made it into the basement and shut the door just as the whole restaurant was obliterated. Lastly, my other Aunt was a student at Washburn University. She and several other students fled to the basement and huddled in a corner. Right before the tornado hit, someone said they needed to change corners. They all ran to an opposite corner just as the building collapsed down into the basement, and crushed the corner that had just been huddled in. All survived. Crazy to think about!

      Yeah older people tend not to be too fearful and often more curious than scared.There's a video of an elderly man who filmed his house from when he first caught sight of it, until it hit his house. No fear at all. His wife died. She was downstairs in the kitchen, and as the upper story (where he was) began to collapse, he rode down with the bricks, but the upper floor crushed down on his wife. I don't believe why people didn't have homeowner's insurance. It's not that expensive, and if you have full coverage for the house and personal belongings, you can start anew. Otherwise, you have to apply for relief funds, and have to settle for something much less. Not very smart!!!
