Soooooo exhausting! I was a bank teller lifetimes ago and there is always a way to verify a check during business hours. People like this get-off on putting Black people through unnecessary obstacles.
Levon, I was a bank teller as well. The bank could've call the clinic and the bank in which the check was drawn on and verify that the check wasn't a fraud. I hope she gets a lump sum from her lawsuit. Sadly Chase Bank is probably still treating black customers this way.
Outing racism like this can only bring to it to white and black people that Chase isn't where your money needs to be. If a bank refuses to open an account for this black woman, it should be on every media.
@@jacquelineneely2100 it would have been great if this had gone viral and the black community decided to pull their money out of Chase Banks across the country . Chase Bank messed up big-time . And oh by the way I am going to make sure I go to the media, after i get his or her business card so I can put their name out there. After all they will be named in the law suit which will be public record. Karma is a biach.
I had a teller at a Chase Bank in Des Moines, Iowa ask me "what does a boy like you do to get clothes and a car like that?" a few years ago. I ended up closing my accounts, and later, left the state. For anyone wondering, I told the $15/hour teller, "medical school, and I'm 53, I'm not a 'boy.' We get to vote, own property and everything!"
Never beg any bank to keep your money. You’re doing them a favor, not the other way around. They will make more interest from your money than you will.
@@C2G2 JP Morgan Chase is not the only bank. Instead of trying to prove to them that the check was authentic, she should’ve gone to another bank. She wasn’t trying to cash the check; she was trying to open an account using that check as her first deposit. Filing the lawsuit is the right thing to do. If she wins the lawsuit, she should deposit the proceeds in a bank that treats her like she’s the customer.
That's cool , but that is of no relevance. My Indian people in the UK have risen to very high professional positions ( a few possible future prime ministers even ) despite extreme racism from whites. And we will support low paid workers with the same passion as we support those on huge salaries.. everyone is equal to us. This happened to me (a black woman) this week in Texas. My check was rejected for days for mobile deposit. Then blocked for further attempts for mobile deposit with the message that the "security certificate" was not valid. When I called 3 days into rejection, I was told that I didnt hsve enough money in my account to cover the check if it was not valid. I was told to go into bank where the branch had the right "to refuse" to deposit it. So I dont know why they wanted me in branch. I told the CSR it was discrimination to refuse to accept my mobile deposit and tell me to go into bank. This meant that I dont have the mobile deposit service available to other customers. After the call, the bank took one of my attempted mobile deposits and approved it and just held money. So my bills are late and I have been assessed fees I couldnt afford to pay.
She is black, professional, a doctor, intelligent, and pretty. They wanted to belittle her and make her feel less than. They wanted to let her know she is still black, even though she has those attributes and credentials. That is some kind of prejudice that they don’t even want Black Americans money. God will be your vindicator.
I was a bank teller in college. This is beyond racist. When someone comes in with a large check to cash or deposit it is typically put on an automatic hold. The funds are verified during that holding time. The bank employees were being the evil racists they are. I hope she gets what she is suing for plus additional punitive damages. Because these bank employees were jealous of this beautiful black woman’s accomplishments, they cost the bank a lawsuit and probably lost their crappy jobs.
I so pray that they were let go; and told in no uncertain terms by Chase Bank that they would not tolerate their clients to be treated in such a degrading manner thenI could see the bank as being Non complicit.
For foreigners to understand, going to the bank as a black or brown person in America is like a foreigner going through immigration at a US airport: there is tension, unease and an irrational feeling that you have done something wrong.

Why would she brush it off when the scam is working ? After she sues the bank she gives half the proceeds to the teller who discriminated against her and everybody wins.
This story is about a banking worker hating on the fact that a young black woman could roll in with a big check. They literally could not believe it to the point they knew it had to be fraudulent….. that’s some bs…
And the fact that they have probably done this to others and nothing was done! Especially the Indian lady who is a minority herself. How dare she act like this towards this hard working citizen! BYE CHASE!

It will. And typically race discrimination suit are so difficult to win but these banks makes it almost a slam dunk. And once they pay her, they will continue to practice the same thing.
I'm a retired IT manager from a large bank. The first questions were valid. Because of money laundering laws questions like what do you do, where is the check from, and other personal informamation is required. However, that information is to help the teller investigate if money is possibly illegal, not whether or not a check is fake. As mentioned in the video, the teller could have called the issuing bank or business. Additionally, I can tell you as a white dude, any checks over a couple hundred dollars are deposited on a hold until they are validated and cleared by the bank they come from. So, their argument that they won't even try to deposit it because they think it is fake is total BS. I worked in a few industries in my IT career, and believe me, the banking industry is among the worst. Insurance companies are probably the only places that treat people worse than banks. Also, the bigger the banks, the worse the experience. Local credit unions are normally a better place to bank, if you can get hooked into one.
And then not all credit unions are good. We left one after banking there for years after they screwed up our account and said it was our fault. I told them that if they do not fix it; my wife and I are leaving their credit union and so will many members of my family. I did not tell them this, but I worked for a very large business and had face to face contact with many people each day and I can tell people I know not to bank there. They finally fixed the issue but with no real apology so we left anyway and love the credit union we are at now for over 20 years.

Whens l go to Houston, I stay with her sometimes and that area is filled with successful Black People. They were just messing with her and if the check was a good, what difference does it make she wasn't trying to cash it. She was trying to deposit it and even if she were ghetto, these young people have money. They all are on the internet making money and small businesses. My niece is a hair stylist and she is only 22 years old and she did a wedding and got paid $8,000 for doing the hair. So these tellers were probably just jealous because black people were not supposed to be making that type of money BUT there's no need to withdraw your money out of Chase because this is not a policy of theirs. I have worked there and they have black people in upper management everywhere in the state.
@Mia Yancey Definitely do that. Or better yet, I'd go with a credit union if I were you. I left Wells Fargo a few years ago and haven't regretted it since. My mother followed suit.

They actually called the police but I demanded that they give me the check and I left. I called and eventually spoke to the regional manager of Chase and all I received was an apology. All they had to do was call the other bank to verify the funds. It's absolutely ridiculous that this is still happening.
I canceled all my credits cards with chase and any affiliations. Chase doesn’t even give you your money back if you have been scammed. This is the worst company ever and I’m glad she’s suing them.

Most banks have a "merchant check verification" option a person can select when they call the payor/employer's bank. The bank's employee or the lead teller should have done that.
Employees in the branch can very seldom contact other banks to verify or request the release of checks and funds. That has to be done by another department (I’ve been working for chase for 2.5 years as a banker)
@Adrian Maybe someone else was referring to calling another bank. One of the banks that I bank at told me that they utilize a banking clearing house system to verify the validity of the checks that they receive. Agreed, but unfortunately, the bias is so deep, that they think multiple players are in cahoots, meaning, even if they had called the issuer, they're thinking they're in on a scheme as well. In their heads no matter who they called, somewhere, somehow, someone is in on a fake check.
Why on earth would they deny the deposit of the check? Worst case you call and verify with the employer that the check is real because of the amount. Most banks only a couple hundred dollars of a check is initially available until the check clears which would limit their liability. Sounds like a bunch of corrupt idiots on a power trip.

It seems Chase is sending the message they don't want to do business with black people. For Chase to say they can refuse business from anyone without a reason sounds fishy. I was a Bank Fraud Investigator for the then Wachovia Bank, Charlotte, NC and also for JP Morgan/Chase, Houston, TX.. It is true that whenver a check is presented for $10,000 or more, bank personell are trained and directed to be suspicious of those amounts and the check be placed on hold via the verification process. Mr. Martin you are correct, they could have contacted the fraud diivision, placed an initial hold on the check, and/or verified the check through the routing number and account number. Now as an employee of Chase I was treated horribly by my employments superiors because I complained and commented on how they handled customers, especially people of color; it was unfair. As I did my job I observed so many inconsistencies when it came to people of color. I was terminated by Chase and they stated that my performance was lackluster. This was in 2011.
I was just discriminated against and called a fraud yesterday by a Hendricks Mercedes Benz sales manager in charlotte, nc. The sales manager also called the police and banned me from the property. And all i was doing was completing the payment transaction paperwork for an contract that was signed by another manager prior agreeing to sell me a car. This has really gotten out of control. But at the same time, it has been going on forever. Nothing has changed.
Don't despair. 30 years ago, I went to the local Merc dealership in Hove (U.K.) and was treated with utter contempt. I brushed the dust off my feet and left the place. 8 years later, I went back to the dealership and there seemed to have been a change of ownership. But being 22 and black and having a check with earnings as much as or higher than the judge's check because of all of the felony transcripts I did, my checks were viewed as suspicious and they put a hold on mine for 3 days every time I went to cash my check. I resented it but assumed the holds would stop after a couple of times, but nope!! An older family friend who had worked in a bank prior and was then in law school happened to be there one day and witnessed me asking the teller why they were still wanting to put a hold on my county-issued payroll check and she intervened and blew up and demanded to see the manager and she lit into them both about verification procedures, protocol, and discrimination, etc., etc. The manager profusely apologized and instructed the teller to never do that again under these circumstances. As if we are incapable of being successful is the true mindset of the average white person... Somehow they aren't wrong... Capitalism was created on the basis of having superior empires whom construct their wealth on the back of "lesser" people or "savages". Capitalism is inherently racist, imperialism is inherently racist, classisme is inherently racist. We won't get rid of racism as long as we don't fight the root cause of that racism which is capitalism... Capitalism needs hierarchical structures to survive, to get rid of racism we need to get rid of those hierarchical structures that have put black people (both African and indigenous Australian or any other indigenous population in the world) at the bottom of those structures. Anti-racism=anti-capitalism. Some of you may not like to hear this but that's the way it is.
Type of car doesn't tell much. During covid I've seen BMW pulled up at the food bank. Still I don't get why with all the technology access that banks have nowadays why is it still so hard to verify check on the spot 🙄
I live in NY and a few years ago I was part of a self help group in my church where we pooled money every week and give to one person to be used as a Morgage down payment , when I got my money and went to chase where I have been banking for years the cashier asked me so many questions and refused to take the money from me . I had to ask for a supervisor who recognized me and explained to her that she didn’t have the right to humiliate me because a check which was drawn on a church account is not difficult to verify . After an apology my check was accepted but a hold was put on it for ten days . Once my check was cleared I took my all my money out and went to another bank . I am sure that my situation is not unique
No that situation isn't unique and one of the reasons a lot of people tend to move their business or even companies out of the West Coast or the Western general is because of s*** like that. So many shenanigans feels like being on a Broadway musical. The work environments are no different.
MIND YOU THAT'S "DEPOSIT" not cash on the spot...deposit, it would have had to clear and be verified...instead of just treating her fairly...they...just...well. CHASE come on now, you are a big, reputable bank. Have standard procedures...and FOLLOW THEM.
Dr. Malika Mitchell Stewart, I am proud of you coz you are a hard working doctor who save lives everyday. Go girl. Continue working hard and ignore the racists in the bank.
This is why we should work towards opening and owning our businesses. A medical degree STILL doesn't get you in the door because of your color. Shameful, very shameful!
It is because we are trying to get into the wrong door. We need our own banks. And it is a message worthy of making the extra effort to spread every time we get the opportunity.
Getting into the banking business is super expensive - but you can always join a credit union. At credit unions, the customers own the bank. You'll get better customer service, better interest rates, and lower fees. Some even offer financial planning/investing services.
We could start our own but seeing black men are so in love with white women their wives would still be over our business 🤦♀️. This is why we need to keep black families like every other culture does.
I find it disgusting that people have to use things like degrees to condition their acceptance! You are HUMAN, you ought to be treated as such, no matter what schooling you did or didn’t get.
I just saw this video. And at this time I'm trying to get my deceased mother's money from Chase Bank. Their giving us the run around and Roland I could use your help!!!
I'm upset that this young lady who's achieved her dream of becoming a doctor had to experience this. For shame on Chase and they should release those 3 employees. No customers should be treated this way EVER. She should have been congratulated instead of humiliated. Best wishes for your future, doctor.
Carla Perry Agreed, but this will keep happening as long as we remain in the Western world. The black skin makes most non-black people feel uneasy, weird, didn't you know? By the way, what are you wearing in your Profile Pic? I'm so obssesed with women's sexy lingeries and clothes 🥰🥰🥲
The only problem I see with Black owned banks is that they may not have branches nation wide, or they may not have many online features a bank like Chase has. I mean through a Chase app on your phone you can wire money to anyone's account, or make mobile deposits. Until Black own banks can compete with the other bigger commercial banks they'll always have these issues competing.
doctors take an oath, tellers dont. but your point is valid, treat the check as any other check, once you verify the CHECK is real no need to do anything else
I had patients call me a while I was actively trying to keep them from dying, or trying to treat lacerations and broken bones. Those sister fisters would still get 100% of my effort and knowledge, even when I could have totally slow coded them or send them home with Tylenol and an ice pack, and even when they literally don't see me as fully human or fully American.
If I was her I would still bank there for a year if she wins. I would then bring the cheque with my lawsuit money. Then request the two women who were involved to deposit for me.
This is so different than my experience. I am Asian (so at 28 I still looked like a punk kid) and a doctor too. When I first became a doctor, my azz was broke as fk 😂!!! I went to deposit a $10,000 Sign on check just like her and to open a savings account when my checking account had like $100 in there 😂!!! They asked me what I did for a living and I told them I was a recent graduate and a new doctor. All of a sudden they start calling me sir 😂!!!! Their demeanor changed completely. Suddenly I am someone to them 😂!!!! They offered credit cards and housing loan info 😂!!! Black folks are discriminated on so bad…

I work at a bank so I can understand wanting to mitigate fraud. However to what Roland if we suspect possible fraud we have to do our due diligence to contact the company. Additionally we contact our fraud department who immediately begins an investigation, by sending paperwork that has a set of requests whether it be paperwork, asking questions, or both. Again to what Roland said we literally put holds on refunds and checks of a certain amount. We had a customer who was upset because she had to wait up to 30 days for her deposit. This was racial profiling.
This appears to be outright discrimination; they didn’t even attempt to open the account to see if she qualified… that was their first error. Then, if they questioned the item at hand a new account hold (usually 7 business days) could have been placed and they would have been well within their rights and avoided this issue. I’ve worked all over Houston and it is a tough market that deals with a lot of fraud, but this was improperly handled. I hope she gets a very nice settlement.

JP Morgan Chase is not the only bank. Instead of trying to prove to them that the check was authentic, she should’ve gone to another bank.

Oops. mis commented. Wrong story.
Dear Lucius McCray: It must be nice to become a doctor, understanding the throughgoing aspects of wanting near perfection -- then have a cloudy understanding of others who want to be just as meticulous.

Most banks have a "merchant check verification" option a person can select when they call the payor/employer's bank. The bank's employee or the lead teller should have done that.
The problem is they don't call anyone they just deny.
I was thinking the same thing. Why didn't they use the clearing house to verify the check.
Banks can place the check on hold to do there due diligence.
However, I think the check in this scenario was a Chase Bank check, (I can't remember). I still don't understand why they couldn't place a hold on the check or even open her a banking account. Why couldn't they open her a bank account?
I used to work at a clinic and had to get change and cash to top up the till every few weeks. And on one of my visits this lady did the same thing and looked me up and down and asked me “why do you need all this change all the time? “What do you do for a living?” “How old are u?” The woman must have thought I was a stripper or something but regardless of what I do for a living or what I want to use my money for they have no right to inquire squat about me! They've never had a $16000 check of their own in their lifetime, so there's no way possible she has one.

you got it ...they were wrong and that bank will probably end up being sued
Yup. People get jealous.
All they had to do was call the business who gave her the check. The legitimacy of the business and their verification would have been enough.
Some banks would have put a hold on the check so due diligence can be done to verify the check.
That's what the bank should have done. Put a hold on the account and verify that she works there and is the money in there account too.
Agreed, but unfortunately, the bias is so deep, that they think multiple players are in cahoots, meaning, even if they had called the issuer, they're thinking they're in on a scheme as well. In their heads no matter who they called, somewhere, somehow, someone is in on a fake check.

I went through something somewhat similar to this when I started working as an official court reporter. Downey Savings would cash the county-issued checks of the judge, the bailiff, and the clerk of the court without issue or holds. But being 22 and black and having a check with earnings as much as or higher than the judge's check because of all of the felony transcripts I did, my checks were viewed as suspicious and they put a hold on mine for 3 days every time I went to cash my check.

If I was her I would still bank there for a year if she wins. I would then bring the cheque with my lawsuit money. Then request the two women who were involved to deposit for me.
@@Noirfury 😂👍💛
In California, that bank manager would have been arrested because this kind of discrimination is against the law.
No, no they would not.
This is so different than my experience. I am Asian (so at 28 I still looked like a punk kid) and a doctor too. When I first became a doctor, my azz was broke as fk 😂!!! I went into the bank dressed in raggedy holy tshirt and sweat pants. The workers looked at me like I was was a scrub.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Most wouldn't be that forthcoming or empathetic.
Thanks for sharing this! Your people in California and Texas apparently don't think so!
Unfortunately, human beings can be shallow.
Not a funny thing. An evil that is done under the sun!
Black and brown folk, stoptalking, take our monies and deposit in black banks and promote them, Roland educate our people on banking black. We can make a difference
Yeah fuk them...
Stop with all this black and brown. One of the bank worker was an Indian.
@@butchfils9464 theyre VERY RACIST
@@butchfils9464 Exactly! Not sure if she meant South Asian Indian or Native “Indian”, but either way both groups exhibit extreme anti-Blackness in their communities. I would even dare to say that the most anti- Black people I’ve ever dealt with were always South Asians & East Asians. Natives I never experienced anti-Blackness from until I started visiting my husband’s hometown in Arizona and came to realize that Navajo are *very* anti- Black. Literally had to go full goon with this Navajo man that called me ugly Black bitch and slapped me out of nowhere. We beat the breaks off his ass, but still…..
Anyway, Black & Brown my ass! I’m Black and those folks ain’t got a thing to do with me.
@@meloise1696 exactly.
CHASE did this to me as well for 14k as a VETETERAN I had ID everything they needed. I left with no services rendered due to suspension they said long story short. never told anyone I was embarrassed and confused. I am glad she is sharing this!!
@@luv4ever101 I agree with you. And why would the fraud dept need to be contacted so fast? I agree with calling BS
Sugarland, TX is actually a historic slave plantation town.
Imagine working so hard and tirelessly to gain the prestige of calling yourself a doctor to have all that positivity be crushed by a chalk woman/man bank teller who's jealous they didn't work hard to achieve that status. They are despicable people. Always have been and always will be. Get your additional bag sis and live your life. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Wouldn't crush mine. They are the idiots.
Imagine not expecting this type of behavior like the person above said.....this is who they are.
DAMN right.
Exactly. It’s so sad. It’s like no matter how educated or professional a black person is, some of our counterparts will ALWAYS question our education, profession and our character ! This is sad ! Very unprofessional and racially unjust for those people in the bank to have done to her ! Glad she spoke up ! This should never be tolerated ! Ever!
@@1tenacityify girl yes!!! Last year veterans day my chalk neighborhood, a man btw, went on a racist rant out of nowhere. I turned the corner in my car and before you know it he was calling me all type of N words, I didn't belong in the neighborhood yadda yadda in the middle of the street not letting my car pass him...sad thing is I did call the police, he apologized or attempted to I was fuming and told him screw his apologies and the real terrorist of America are chalk people. The police didn't do anything but write a report for such a negative unwarranted attack against me..smh..I'm still traumatized by that experience....I've never been treated so badly in my life. I'm moving to a different city in June but there's nothing more dangerous than a bored chalk woman or man ready to ruin a black person day! I pray for your safety too sis🙏🏾🙏🏾
Their upset that this young African American women could actually earn this amount of money....jealous.
That’s why it’s great having our own media and not having to rely on the mainstream to tell our story.
