I stumbled on one of Alise's videos researching the Azores Islands. Then this one on angles landing. She does great videos. Definitely worth folowing her videos. I have done this hike 3 times. Haven worked for the boilermakers walking steel beams 100 plus feet in the air, i was comfortable doing it. The secret is to be very deliberate with every move. If you have a fear of hights, Definitely not a hike to take.
I hiked Half Dome, The Wave, Havasupai Falls and Angels Landing (many times) before permits. AL an HD charge a fee to try (for another fee). Havasupai costs $375 minimum/person. If the 5 of us had paid $1875 , that's what I would remember of the hike. As the required planning and fees inevitably increase, some will take risks (rain slickened ladders at the falls, slick mud/wind near cliffs, lighting...) that they wouldn't take if it were spontaneous and free (other than park passes) to come back. Also, I've hiked The Wave post permits and many people simply ignored the permit requirement. I felt like a fool for following the rules. I'll probably never do these hikes again.
Wow I guess you’re right there is that illegal hike in Hawaii thousands have done. I’m a rule follower so stuff like that really ticks me off, I wouldn’t have been happy to wait years to get a wave permit and then see people doing it without permits either
This is my favorite hike in the park. Over the years I have hiked it 11 times, including once in the winter. Last year I hiked the West Rim Trail as a 1-night backpack. By the time I got to Scouts Lookout the line of people at the chains was probably 200 people. I decided to pass, especially since I had a full size backpack. I think the permit system is necessary.

Love it. This is a hike I’d like to do someday but I’ve had no interest in sharing this hike with a million other people. I’ll be curious how it goes this year and think this is a great idea that many other, more spacious trails, already do.
Got lucky and did the hike in December and don’t have to deal with a lot of people! However toward the end it definitely started getting busy so happy I did it when I did.
I hiked Angel's Landing on my birthday last November. I was on the first shuttle of the day and hiked to the top as quickly as I could and still had to deal with a throng of people on the way down. Let's give it a chance. Those that are committed to doing the hike will do the work to get the permit. Looking forward to the video of you on the top! #redo
This is actually good news. After watching your last video on Angels landing i put off a trip here. There was a few second clip of your decent. It looked like a crowded mall. Normally I hate a lottery system but this and similar hikes it can be very useful. More and more hikes require a permit. Old Rag in Virginia now requires a day pass for 1$
Sounds like they're trying to determine which option is best: either require a permit to enter Zion or to hike Angels Landing. Having never been to Zion, I'll take the latter option (for now...). Plenty of other hikes as shown in your other video. I appreciate you taking the time to discuss in detail. If entering Glacier from the west, be sure to stop at the natural spring on your right as you travel along US Hwy 2E where it runs along the Flathead River. Short little pull-off for pure, clean water.

The permit system is great for such a popular and dangerous spot for many reasons, but the lottery system is abysmal. Before anyone disagrees, hear me out.. It should have been on a first come, first serve basis when it comes to getting permits online. This way it keeps things fair to everyone, especially those who are planning entire vacations around this and can't just drive to the park at any time. We were checking every day for weeks and eventually stayed up and applied the moment it was possible. It was a massive letdown not being selected after all that, since we're travelling thousands of kilometers to get there. We have a permit system in some of our Canadian park spots, but it's not a lottery. It's on a first buy, first serve basis. Works great and helps people plan a lot easier.
The first come first serve for American parks doesn’t work. This is what they use for day before park permits for RMNP and almost always the system crashes as so many people are logging on at 12:01 that even if you have things in your cart you can’t get them.

Hopefully they update their website/servers to better handle this sort of thing in the future, or look for a better solution. Assuming there are funds to cover this sort of thing. Thanks for the gorgeous scenery from Angels Landing. Sooo glad you did this...so I don't have too. Exposure like this makes my head spin. A permitting system like this is fine by me bc some popular natural wonders are getting loved to death. Not a necessarily good thing or bad thing, just the way it is. Not a fan of crowded outdoor spaces so I'll miss visiting these types of places in person. Like Yogi Berra famously once said, "nobody goes there anymore, it's gotten too crowded.
glad to hear a permit system being implemented or at least tried. I've felt for a long time that our national parks and wildernesses are being overused and even abused at times. In my biggest adventure of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 1988 - there were about 50 people who attempted the entire trail the entire year. Today there are 50 a day who leave the border in April and May.

Having worked in multiple National Parks across the US, it is a necessity now (love it). Too much erosion, too many careless carefree people oblivious to their surroundings when they are in “vacation mode”. Restricting the volume of people accessing these areas has taken way too long. NPS needs to be a lot harder on those wanting to hike something that is life threatening. The amount of people up there in 2020 was ridiculous so having a restricted amount is great, about time. Have seen a lot of unnecessary things going on in the Parks when NPS is no where to be seen. Places like this and Half Dome, which are perilous hikes, need to be regulated. Thanks for all you do, be safe, keep inspiring us all and remember to breathe it all in…. :)

When you weight the risk /rewards, i would skip this hike, not worth it. Even with a caribiner on a steel cable, equipment can fail, usually at the worst time.
Just joined.. please help I want to hike this with my daughter in April 2023.. I need permits, lodging and places to stay.. closest would be better for gramps which just climbed the Half Dome
The trail is closed April 3-6th and since reservations are closed for that period you will have to try to get them one day prior which is probably pretty unlikely for a group of 3. I would recommend staying at the Zion lodge in the park which is almost across the street from Angels Landing trailhead. The other option would be to book a lottery date for further down the summer which opens in April

I had the same issue with the park in Yosemite.. it was a terrible experience I had to pay someone 350 dollars because of my windows that I have.. do you know if they have guilds for this climb?? It was ridiculous then and it is now..
@@davidelcess6559 David if you don’t apply during the permit window the only way to get a permit is to wait until the day prior and hope you can get one then. Don’t ever buy a permit from anyone that is highway robbery and they also aren’t transferable. There are a lot of other great hikes in Zion with great views, I would go see if you can get one and have a back up plan if you can’t

I did the same for the half dome I paid the ripoff charge just to get the pass for that window.. wasn’t happy but I checked it off my list.. this will be my final climb for fun the remaining climbs I do will be for prospecting in the west.. thanks for your help.. believe me it’s like pulling teeth to get any thing done with the parks..

Have you experienced Ouray’s Via Ferrata? Climbers wear a harness and click onto a guide wire. I’m curious if a similar solution has been considered for the chain portions of Angels Landing.

Any idea when or if they will reopen the Observation Point trail from Weeping Rock? That was a great trail. You can still get to Observation point via the East Mesa Trail but that doesn't look as interesting as the trail from Weeping Rock. Observation Point looks down on Angels Landing and it wasn't nearly as crowded. I hiked the Obers Point in 2011 and didn't see anybody for maybe 30 minutes to an hour and only saw a few people on the way up.
Weeping Rock had a big landslide/rockslide I haven’t heard when it will reopen and am super interested to see what it looks like now, I’m not sure if the rock face broke or if it was the trail itself.
I'm a bigger guy and got up to Scout's Lookout without much issue. That's the harder physical part. Didn't go to Angel's Landing due to it being later and it was too busy.
The permit system is ridiculous in that there is no penalty for those that get a slot and end up not going. I live in the midwest and it's a $1200 investment for me to fly to the state/rent car/lodging and not including food and fuel cost. To potentially not get a permit and knowing there is for certainty people who don't actually use their permits is infuriating. I get the reasoning for it but the fairness for it is lacking.
Apply for a permit in the permit season and you don’t have to worry about the worry of trying to get a last minute one. I agree this punishes people that don’t or can’t plan ahead but it has great benefits for the area
It looks way more dangerous on camera than when you're actually doing it, in my opinion. It's wider than it appears. You don't even really need the chain except in a couple of spots. I know it has a reputation for being "one of the most dangerous hiking trails in America", but it's not. Not even close. I've done dozens of trails way sketchier than it. That being said, it is one of the best hiking trails in this country. The views up the valley from the very top are spectacular.
Oh yes you are so correct. It is a great hike but there are way too many people making video with camera angles that make this seem way too scary then it actually is.

That place has been ruined for decades. Worse than Disney. What they really needed to implement was a physical requirement because of the hundreds of people going up there every day that don't have the ability to remain safe, but that's not PC for the snow flakes.
I hiked angels landing last November and seen a couple at the top with a one year old kid on one of those kid harness backpacks. Oh, and the mom was also pregnant. I could not believe what I was seeing,
When comes a time you have to buy a permit or keep your fingers crossed hoping to win a hiking lottery, this is when it is time to consider moving on and trade parks. Since the beginning of the pandemic, too many new hikers have been seen on a trail, and looking at this video, that tells us to stay away at all cost. Anywhere there are accommodations, hotels and such at a trailhead, I see this as a fair warning sign. The outdoors is not a manicured lifestyle, this is what we do to appreciate the comfort of city life from time to time. 🇨🇦😎🏔🥾

Love Zion NP. Went there in 2019 and did a lot of hiking. Springdale is a very chill place to stay in.
I actually done this hike a few years ago and I got to be honest I don't like this permit system at all!

When I first went to Zion in 2009 there was no permit system. We just went, hiked up, hiked down, and took the shuttle. When did this become a thing?

Moved to Sothern Utah in the 80's and hiked Angels Landing many times with NO one on the trail. I won't hike it today.

I have done many via ferratta’s and if you clipped into angels landing it would be somewhat similar but most people do not wear harnesses.

It’s called a lottery for a reason. The chances of getting a permit is probably slim to none.

That place has been ruined for decades. Worse than Disney. What they really needed to implement was a physical requirement because of the hundreds of people going up there every day that don't have the ability to remain safe, but that's not PC for the snow flakes.

I hiked angels landing last November and seen a couple at the top with a one year old kid on one of those kid harness backpacks. Oh, and the mom was also pregnant. I could not believe what I was seeing,
When comes a time you have to buy a permit or keep your fingers crossed hoping to win a hiking lottery, this is when it is time to consider moving on and trade parks. Since the beginning of the pandemic, too many new hikers have been seen on a trail, and looking at this video, that tells us to stay away at all cost. Anywhere there are accommodations, hotels and such at a trailhead, I see this as a fair warning sign. The outdoors is not a manicured lifestyle, this is what we do to appreciate the comfort of city life from time to time. 🇨🇦😎🏔🥾
