I really enjoy your videos and have learned so much - thank you! I have 2 questions and a comment. 1) do you recommend using warming mats to keep temps stable during winter months? 2) Do you notice a mildew smell on the plants? Also, perhaps a reminder to your viewers of the importance of hand washing (before and after handling plants) with respect to disease transmission? Cheers and keep the videos coming!
Not sure about warming mats, never tried them. I didn't notice a mildew smell, when my plants had it - maybe because I caught it early. I read that it might have a smell of rotting vegetation, at severe stages. Hand washing is a must in African Violet care, absolutely! Appreciate your feedback!
Excellent video, thanks so much for sharing this information. I've been growing AVs for several years and haven't had any PM. Noticed it the first time today, and this video was very helpful! 😇🌺💖
I use the aerosol spray by Lysol, it’s worked for me. I take the plant away from lights, take of the flowers, then lightly spray a mist over the top. I check that night & spray again if needed (usually does) the following day I spray once keeping it away from lights & repeat the next day & then wait a few days to see how it’s doing. The following week it’s usually all gone. But this is how it works for me in my home environment. I have 3 fans that are blowing but there’s always gotta be that one drama 👸🏻🪴
I hear you - even in the most favorable environment there will be always one or two plants that require extra special attention! Aerosol spray would for sure create a finer mist than a spray bottle - I need to try it sometime. Some growers also use combinations of baking soda and liquid soap, baking soda and neem oil, etc. - so many things to learn and try out! Appreciate your feedback!
@@grayturtleviolets first time I got powdery mildew was last year and luckily I had the aerosol spray. I didn’t know what to do so I looked it up and I watched bloomlovers video & it worked! I was so happy! Since then I’ve just experimented with it. But definitely take the flowers off & if the leaves are too far gone. Then spray & I keep away from the lights.
A year ago I had a small powdery mildew problem I caught early and only had to spot treat. The Lysol wipes that we were stockpiling in those early covid days worked great - a little dabbing eliminated the few PM spots in one treatment. I didn't notice any lasting damage to the leaves from the PM or the Lysol wipe.
you hurt my heart when you said we have to remove the blooms! Luckily I already had these products from watching your videos. But I am stubborn. I followed all your instructions except for removing the blooms. lol. I hope I don't regret it later.
I usually let my plant rest in the dark overnight after the fungicide application, to make sure the leaves are dry, and then repot into fresh potting mix the following morning.
When I just started growing in 2019, I bought a potting mix that was infested with gnats - the only thing that helped me eliminate them was starting to mix my own potting mix and adding Bonide Houseplant Insect Control systemic granules to it. I talk about it in this video: th-cam.com/video/pLLcZOfIo-E/w-d-xo.html
Should've used the aerosol type, for finer mist - thanks for the tip! Got to wait till I've used up all of the fungicides I've accumulated first though, and then try that one - always so much to learn!
Watching now, maybe you will answer in the video so apologies in advance but is their systemic treatment for PM? I hate spraying my violets it’s a lot of work.
Sprays are my least favorite products, too. Unfortunately, systemics for powdery mildew that I've come across so far, come only in the spray form - Immunox, with the main ingredient Myclobutanil - a systemic fungicide applied as a foliar spray, so far has proven most effective, based on the expert growers feedback.

Thrips are known to feed on pollen, so removing the blooms is an extra precaution. Hope it works out for you, too! Happy growing!
