Pro tip: your ratcheting screwdriver (or "clicky clicky" if you will) can take Hex bits to put together IKEA furniture. So much easier than those stupid L shaped Allen keys
@@miniaturesteamnick as someone that feels very unfomfortable with drilling, I'd suggest he stick with the improved hand tools for ikea. There have been times that I thought I was making my life easier by inserting a power tool, and it only made the situation worse.
Most drills these days have screw driver “clutch” where you can select a certain torque that it stops turning so you can’t over-tighten screws. I would highly recommend using these or an electric screwdriver - especially if you have lots to build. It will make it so much quicker and save your wrists.
Dude, you're so busy right now. We appreciate the vlogs you are doing but please don't feel pressured to get a main channel video out or even the vlogs. You've just moved into your own space after living out of rented rooms for 6 months, enjoy yourself.
Electric screw driver or a power drill set on low speed makes work go faster. Drill also usefull for installing shades and blinds. Get a tool box for tools so all in one place. You are an adult now!
Hey Evan, not sure if anyone commented already but TV licencing is for anything that you would be watching live. Basically, it means that anything you would be watching live streamed whether on your laptop or tv would be under tv licencing. As long as youtube premiere doesn't have 'live' sign on it you can watch it without a tv licence. If you wish to watch anything on bbc iplayer whether live or on demand you will need tv licence. Funny thing is that they don't have authority to enter your home and as long as you say that you do not watch live tv you are good. They do try to check it occasionally, but since you are living in an apartment building, it might be a bit hard for them to check your flat directly. :)
I was just building a shelf today because I rearranged some stuff in my flat and I really identify with the “this is not my coffe table, wtf manual” feeling.
Hey - fellow recent new build purchaser here! In terms of drilling and hanging I highly recommend you get a stud finder before you go putting in holes anywhere. I think the one I have was £25 and can check for studs, pipes, metal etc. I’d also recommend you pick up some good filler, a filler knife and trade white paint because you will make a few mistakes along the way and I find that I’m a lot less anxious when prepared! Don’t forget that some things can be “no more nailed” into place like bathroom fixings etc. Glad to see your place come together and as a design graduate it’s great to hear that you’re getting into interior design! If you’re into mid century - eBay is a great place to find unique pieces and a lot of the time they’re actually based in / around London. Can’t wait to see it all come together! 😁
As someone who has waaay too much “stuff” in my life and discovering the joys of minimalism, I highly recommend waiting to buy more furniture and decor until you have lived with it for a while.
The probable reason your normal screwdriver stripped the screw head is because they are different. One is a "Philips" (with 4 points) and the other is a "Pozidriv" (with 8 points, 4 big and 4 small). The actual angle of the screwdriver splines is different meaning the Philips is loose in a Pozidrive screw head and therefore it strips them. If you don't have a Posidriv to hand however one quick fix is the grind about 1mm off the end of a Philips (you can use a brick on an exterioor wall or something) so it sits further in the screw head and gives it that extra grip.
Soooo happy that you're worrying anxiously about furnishing your own place! 3:00 They can come in to inspect your home for "TV signal receivers" or something like that. And unless you watch BBC iPlayer in any shape or form, especially live, you'll be alright. I never watch BBC on my laptop😉🤥
A word of warning from a friend that lived in a flat with he same setup as you (he live in a victorian nurse housing block that got coverent into flats ~ also it was listed building)... after a few years his ground rent went up and up and up and him and his wile had to sellup and move out because that bill was more than his mortgage payments. Scotland has a cap and law about these type of payments/bills where in England it is totally unregulated and there been cases owners of the building putting the ground rents up 1000%+ just to drive out people that moved in due to the fact X% of the development had to be social housing and they did not agree with the current law or the people that moved in.
Hey, great video. I have that coffee table. By the way, it’s not live tv you have to pay your tv license for, it’s anything on BBC iPlayer too. So if you’re watching anything on iPlayer, make sure you’re paying it!
You know Evan. You're smart bloke, educated, tech savy, cosmopolitan, friendly, great personality, personable, young and a proffessional person. You are going to go far in life. I can see good things for you including wealth, because buying property in London is a very hard thing to do, and you've achieved it. You have the knowledge..upwards and onwards. London will embrace you. .
Hello! Your episode popped into my feed and I have a couple of suggestions that you might find useful. I’m female and very handy with my tools… first up, buy yourself a stud finder and a level to make sure you know if you’re drilling into a stud or just sheet rock. Measure and re-measure ‘till you’re 99.9 percent sure you have your mirror located where you want it to be. To avoid pencil marks on your walls, place a piece of masking tape where you need to mark and draw a line using your level to guarantee everything is straight. If you are truly uncomfy with drills and such, don’t force yourself to do it, just find a friend you know is handy, buy him/her lunch and done! Not everyone needs to be handy, do what makes you most comfy and happy! Good Luck and Enjoy! 😊
Second point on the 'do you need a TV licence' rules. Watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, *TH-cam*, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)
Your desk looks a lot like mine, but I suppose these adjustable-height desks all look very much alike. But they are great. BTW: In Germany, you have to have a licence if you have any kind of device in your home that would allow you to listen to the radio or watch television, regardless of whether you actually do so. That includes computers with internet access. So yes, virtually everyone is required to pay for a licence. Whether they do or not is a completely different question!
I don't have to pay because I'm on benefits but my flatmate has to pay still so I still kind of have to pay for that stupid license because it would be unfair not to share that expense. Absolutely ridiculous we don't watch tv and only use sites like Netflix and don't use the öffentlichrechtliche Sender online either. I think it should be free or at least you should be able to get out of paying it easier. Like just block access to those sites and those tv channels if I don't pay I don't care. I don't listen to the radio either and with how much money they get every year and somehow they still want more I understand why so many people are angry.

I've been catching up on the house videos. This is really funny, I am just finishing up a massive renovation of my first house. Basically reno'd everything. I feel for you Evan with figuring stuff out but I am laughing at how entertaining it would be to see you go through everything I've done in the past six months. Best advice a friend gave me, houses are very modular, if you break something it's easy enough to fix. I managed to destroy a corner bead (metal part that makes the outside corners of doorways sharp) had to call back my drywall guy and have him fix my mess up. Paint it again and it's no big deal.
Pro tip, Hex keys can be used long ways too. much easier to spin the screw using the opposite end first and then crank with the long arm. Also check out blackbeltbarrister, he has done many videos on the TV license from a legal perspective. Live youtube is ok if it isn't broadcast on TV at the same time essentially. rewind TV is fine also, so catch up. The license only covers LIVE TV on whatever platform it is broadcast on. The only rewind you can't watch is iPlayer.
I once bought a 12 cubby hole shelving unit. Couldn't imagine how i could manipulate all the bits by myself so paid the shop that sold it to me to send someone out to build it. When he came he couldn't follow the instructions properly so we ended up doing it together (lol) So now I always put things together myself
Watching you go through what you did to get your place and how much you appreciate even the annoying life stuff reminds me of our journey to buy our home. It was a humbling 10+ years and when we finally got to call this house ours, we really do appreciate everything so much more!! We're still getting used to the idea of doing what we want to the place without our landlords crying about any improvements that needed to be made, but I'm getting there. Enjoy your home journey, now that you're in it!!! Soak it up. It's YOURS!
Highly recommend getting a wobble board for your standing desk, to keep circulation going (I like the ones that are basically a curved board with bumps to massage your feet... you can keep it very still when needed or can wobble back and forth). It makes you a couple inches taller, so the extra height on the desk would be useful!
One of the first things I bought for my new flat - (first time living by myself in an unfurnished place!) was a step ladder! It was much needed! I actually just assembled my last bit of furniture and I moved into my flat in early October! I had to wait to buy a few things due to you know, money... but my dressing table was the last thing to be put up today - which I bought in early January...
In general for online viewing with the TV licence. You need it for catchup services like iplayer. You don't need it for TH-cam, with the exception of where it's being used as a catchup service. You need it for services where the broadcaster is treating it as a linear broadcast not just a livestream (so think it it like the UK Parliament twitch channel, or when Channel 4 broadcasts Formula E on TH-cam) You don't need it to watch livestreams from normal streamers (so if you were streaming, we wouldn't need to have a licence to watch you) The whole livestream thing is a huge grey area. There's no real definition over what constitutes a TV service vs a livestream broadcast,
Dont worry evan, im trying to get my apartment fixed up and its alot to take on, overwhelming, i really want to organize and have everything neat, clean and tidy and it seems like i cant get it that way. Lol. Its a big undertaking.
Thank you so much for this video Evan! Seeing more of how your home is set up made me feel a lot less shit about my own abilities in interior design. You are good at it, but your abilities seem more realistic here than the image we get from your main channel :) Your home looks great!

Keep us up to date on the licence fee stand off. I wish I was brave enough not to pay but I know they'd get me and I do watch some live tv.
TV license is just for TV channels e.g. BBC, ITV. It is how the BBC is funded so TH-cam, Netflix etc. in any form doesn't count... You can go online and tell them you don't need one and they will stop sending letters
Kim N ......... the Queen of shelf brackets. I'd trust her for any handyperson advice if I was you. Good to see DJL making an appearance ..... I'm now waiting for his vid titled "I helped !!!"
You only need the TV license if you are watching live "broadcast" TV (I realise it's no longer technically broadcast, but like if you hooked up a Freeview box) or if you are using the BBC iPlayer online for anything live or streaming later. Interestingly, you don't need the license to watch iTV player or any of the other online players that have a live option, so you wouldn't need it to watch TH-cam.
Anyone know if Evan has detailed his desk setup as yet in terms of where to purchase? Including the riser and laptop holder - exactly what I’m looking for at the moment but haven’t found anything that looks this good!
As someone who does a lot of DIY (I built an extension and porch) it always makes me laugh when people struggle with flat pack. Not to brag, but the other night I built and installed an entire kitchen. I mean, I was up until 3am, but I was determined to get it done in one night.
hello! plz tell me the brand of your couch/ sofa! I was looking such a color from one year and in june (maybe earlier) I will have my own flat. And fabric is great, too!
I thought you only needed a TV licence for BBC channels (including the Iplayer) because every other channel was paid through ads so having a TV and only watching online content should be fine, just don’t plug your aerial in. I’m pretty sure I opted out of it for this same reason but I can’t remember exactly.
You tube lives aren’t covered by TV license. You need Tv license to watch any live broadcast TV (recieved over TV frequencies) and for BBC iPlayer live streaming and BBC iPlayer on -demand. But you can watch other broadcasters catch up with out a license.
Hey, welcome to 2022 time traveller. Here in 2022 (and in 2021 and in 2020 and in 2019 and in 2018 and (IIRC) 2017) you pay TV license if you watch anything live, regardless of platform - this includes youtube.
@@channul4887 - sorry let me clarify. You don’t need a license to watch a random TH-camrs live stream. You only need one if the live stream you are watching via TH-cam is also being broadcast on traditional TV. This is the exact wording from the TV licensing website…. “Do I need a TV Licence to watch TH-cam? You don’t need a TV Licence to watch videos or clips on demand on TH-cam. But you do need a TV Licence if you watch TV programmes live on TH-cam. An example of this would be watching Sky News live. But it isn’t just live news or sport which needs a licence - it’s any programme which is part of a TV channel, broadcast or transmitted for everyone to watch at the same time.”
@@bu3034 Yep. Those too, and how could I forget all the special edition BBC Sounds podcasts. People won't know what hit them if they start to move to American subscription formats.
It's intentionally opaque but generally understood that you don't need a TV licence to watch live streaming except stuff that is also broadcast, e.g. Sky News or ABC News on TH-cam (yes even if it's broadcast abroad it counts). I like the BBC in theory but haven't had a licence for 8 years, it wasn't worth it for me once they gave up F1 - I'm not paying £150 a year to watch Dr Who. I no longer tell Capita that I don't need a licence (I object to having to keep telling them after years) and am waiting to see if they ever turn up at my door. So far I just have hundreds of slightly threatening letters.
Yeah I never understand the instruction on putting together furniture, I always - always-just look at the pictures to see if I'm doing the right thing because the instructions confuse me so much.
Americans when faced with putting together Ikea furniture: Oh nooo! We're doomed! Germans when faced with putting together non Ikea furniture: Its not Ikea???? We're doomed!!!
Newb....shortly you'll think "hmm if I had an battery powered drill with some hex bits, putting all the furniture together would've stopped all that RSI I now have"🤔😁 7:35 oh then you've only yourself to blame 😁
Love your content Evan, you don't need a licence to watch live TH-cam vids so long as the creator is not a TV company. Blackbelt barrister on YT covered this in a recent video.
The licence fee is just for all television I'm pretty sure...like owning a TV makes you legally have to pay it..although contrary to popular belief the law isn't actually enforced.
"unless they transmit it using tv signal broadcasting at the same time" You just made up your own law there, gringo. This isn't stipulated anywhere, hence any live broadcast requires tv license.
@@channul4887 just google it, you will have the tv licence page saying the same If something is transmitted on TV and TH-cam at the same time you need the licence It doesn't matter if something is live or not, tv might show a prerecorded channel. What does matter is that something is transmitted to the tv receivers "live" meaning at the same time. If your TH-cam live stream, is not transmitted to any tv channel at the same time, it is all good But if BBC will decide to play this video and broadcast it and you will watch it at the same while BBC viewers were watching it, you will need a tv licence
Tv license and viewing TH-cam…… Watching a normal everyday vloger is fine, the tv license covers companies that have a broadcast license from the government. So it would only be needed if you were watching something live from one of those companies, which would be very rare if ever…..
@5:23 Please Evan, don't do this type of thing barefoot in the future. Desks like this one are really heavy and you really don't want something like that to land on your toes. Please wear some sturdy shoes, with steel toecaps if you have them.

I’m pretty sure it’s a ‘Smart Desk’
Evan, you're such an avocado whisperer!!
As someone who does a lot of DIY (I built an extension and porch) it always makes me laugh when people struggle with flat pack.
Not to brag, but the other night I built and installed an entire kitchen. I mean, I was up until 3am, but I was determined to get it done in one night.
You can really only mess up a flatpack by overthinking everything, and I believe that's Evans problem.
Building Ikea furniture can be a pain at times. I have 7 Ikea builds of my own. :)
A chair mite be safer to stand on while installing the lights. :)
I love those screwdrivers!!!! Best purchased when I moved out of home!
Thank you for the video! Have an amazing week!
Leatherman: the perfect tool for rounding off nuts. I guess it does a fine job on screw heads too!
What's the easiest way to stand up a desk, "I know, we'll do it lengthways" . . . 😶🙄
Love the desk
Nice chill video. Awesome to see everything coming together.
Woah, Cheers Evan. My homepod has just gone mental 😂😂
Please link the study desk--I'm in love
It looks just like my uplift desk, except a lot smaller.
Where did you get the desk? Everything looks lovely! :)
hello! plz tell me the brand of your couch/ sofa!
Parlour Palms bounce back, ,mine have been through it and their growth is now better than ever.
Me: feels fear over Evan gesturing with a full mug of tea "at least it can't get worse than this!"
Evan: holds scissors
Me: "oh no"
Love the music!
Tv licences aren't just for live TV, you also need one to use bbc iplayer
@@CulturePhilter ah, you see that's a tiny but very important detail. I missed it.
Live TV only counts for organisations supported by the licence so not TH-cam
you're a real pro (crastinator/ductinator)
TV licensing does not just apply to live BBC TV but also to BBC iPlayer. It also funds Channel 4/4 On Demand.
And all local and national BBC radio stations including BBC news channels...as such it's brilliant value!
@@bu3034 Yep. Those too, and how could I forget all the special edition BBC Sounds podcasts.
People won't know what hit them if they start to move to American subscription formats.
The TV licence doesn't fund channel 4. It is publicly owned but entirely self funded through advertising and selling content.
Luke has cool socks !!
Where did you buy this desk? I am looking for a similar one.
Americans when faced with putting together Ikea furniture: Oh nooo! We're doomed!
Germans when faced with putting together non Ikea furniture: Its not Ikea???? We're doomed!!!
That desk is amazing. Where is it from?!
It looks like he bought a Jarvis from a company called fully. You can mix and match your own set. Can recommend :)
0:08 love the map of Middle Earth Evan! Thoughts on RoP?
Newb....shortly you'll think "hmm if I had an battery powered drill with some hex bits, putting all the furniture together would've stopped all that RSI I now have"🤔😁
7:35 oh then you've only yourself to blame 😁
Where is the rug from please?
There was a hsbc ad before this video 🤣
Love your content Evan, you don't need a licence to watch live TH-cam vids so long as the creator is not a TV company. Blackbelt barrister on YT covered this in a recent video.
BBC iPlayer even though it's not live, needs a TV license to watch so… that's interesting.
Extra engagement to maybe help when you can’t post as much
This is just me trying to make TH-cam happy
💖
The licence fee is just for all television I'm pretty sure...like owning a TV makes you legally have to pay it..although contrary to popular belief the law isn't actually enforced.
“Adult legos” There are two things wrong with that sentence
Sandays studio film
Is that a damn smash mouth reference in the thumbnail?
Evan, you're a homeowner now, get yourself a better set of tools. Even just a small tool kit with spanners and real screw drivers would work.
Plus at least a small step ladder or stool.
Live TH-cam doesn't count, unless they transmit it using tv signal broadcasting at the same time
"unless they transmit it using tv signal broadcasting at the same time"
You just made up your own law there, gringo. This isn't stipulated anywhere, hence any live broadcast requires tv license.
@@channul4887 just google it, you will have the tv licence page saying the same
If something is transmitted on TV and TH-cam at the same time you need the licence
It doesn't matter if something is live or not, tv might show a prerecorded channel. What does matter is that something is transmitted to the tv receivers "live" meaning at the same time.
If your TH-cam live stream, is not transmitted to any tv channel at the same time, it is all good
But if BBC will decide to play this video and broadcast it and you will watch it at the same while BBC viewers were watching it, you will need a tv licence
@@michal4705 I stand corrected, muchos gracias gringo.
Tv license and viewing TH-cam……
Watching a normal everyday vloger is fine, the tv license covers companies that have a broadcast license from the government.
So it would only be needed if you were watching something live from one of those companies, which would be very rare if ever…..
Get yourself a decent electric screwdriver, makes life so much easier.
Annoyingly yes you do need a tv licence for youtube.
@5:23 Please Evan, don't do this type of thing barefoot in the future. Desks like this one are really heavy and you really don't want something like that to land on your toes. Please wear some sturdy shoes, with steel toecaps if you have them.
Why would you need to put in a new light bulb already in a new flat?!!!
Cause they’re smart, dimmable, and temperature changing
I want to print 40 copies for paper toy for local school
Bote 3euros for a cocola
you should buy electric screwdriver) it even better the clicky one)))
Live streaming content doesn't come under the tv licensing law, even if the letters say it does - that's just them being twats. Just don't get a tv license :)
