    A great tip to hold the powder down in the Vitamix or an blender, is loosely put plastic wrap over the top before putting the cover on the container. You won’t lose powder on the lid or be so overwhelmed by the powder when removing the lid. I also dehydrate the stems of the spinach leaves.

      One year later…, I hope you see this comment. That is an awesome idea. As is using the smallest blender/processor available so you don’t lose that much on the container.
      Now my super hot peppers that I smoke and powder will not nuke my kitchen again!!!!

    Haha, this video made me chuckle. My thirty-year-old "hipster" son (he hates it when I call him that,) comes up to visit us in the country from the city a lot. In the morning he goes out to harvest nettles, usually collecting about half a bucket. I always tell him, whilst it's great that he loves to forage here, don't bother with the nettles because by the time they are time consumingly prepared (yes, by moi, naturally,) all that effort only produces about 1/4 of a cup of food! I'll stick to frozen spinach. Cheers from Oz! 🦘

    I put the spinach powder in my morning mixed-Berry fruit smoothie along with cinnamon, a banana, whole milk, and chia seeds. My doctor waves the paper with my test results on it at me and grins! Good food is life! I started powdering with ancho chilis several years ago. Soak in hot water, remove stems and seeds, then purée and dehydrate, then powder. Pure ancho chili powder is wonderful! I have been freezing my chipotle peppers in adobo, but I think I will try puréing and powdering those as well. The new dehydrator arriving tomorrow will take the stress off my Breville oven! Not long ago, I tried to dry fresh basil in my dehydrator. I set the temp @ 145. After just an hour, it came out with blackish spots (some pretty large). It looked terrible so I threw it away. The leaves to start had no blemishes. I did wash them first & allowed them to air dry before dehydrating.

      Hi Sue. I think you might have cooked/burned yours. I just dry my basil on a large tray on my dining room table, flip once a day, and they are dry in about a week. The house smells great, too! My first choice is to dry outside under the sun. I can’t stand bugs or flys, so I use the umbrella as a stand to hang a mesh bug-net over the table & clip it to the edges of the table.

    • @phtwiss9248
      @phtwiss9248 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The volatile oils of basil don't like heat. Best to just hang the branches upside-down in an airing cupboard, then pull off the leaves when they are dry. I sometimes will lay out the leaves on a baking sheet in the car, (if it's a Nice fall day -- Not a Hot day!).
      Dehydrators aren't a "magic" machine for every plant. Dehydrating without a dehydrator is all about temperature and humidity.

      @@adriane7608 I would say 6 months to be on the safe side. Generally I do not keep my dehydrated goods more than 1 year.

    I'm starting to powder my veggies, from the garden, and just have a question, that I haven't seen answered yet. How long will these powders last, once you have them in the jars??? Thanks for all of this wonder information.

      I am guessing about two years, but ours will be gone long before then! So I will be constantly making them!

      I have done a video on green pasta using asparagus powder! We could do one on spinach, but it would be the same recipe except using spinach powder instead.

    How does dehydrated fresh spinach hold up just as cooked spinach for a side dish?
    Have you ever dehydrated from package frozen spinach from the grocery store? I was just wondering how it would work. I think there may be too much water content in frozen spinach.
    I just found a good dehydrator and another vacuum seal machine yesterday at a thrift store. I have a dehydrator like the one I found.
    My daughter and I want to set up a dehydrating station. Our houses are next door to each other out in the country and we share evening meals. I am 72 my husband is 76, she and her husband are 54. We both have been long term preppers.

      I powder most of my dehydrated veggies and don't rehydrate them as side dishes.

    Have you ever rehydrated the leaves by themselves. I put spinach in my wedding soup. Wondered how this would turn out.

    • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not see an advantage to using my freeze dryer. The dehydrator is very fast with spinach--faster than the FD is. Plus, I was going to powder it as well. You could certainly use a FD if you prefer.
