Yep. It was released about a year before the first variator in a car. The motobecane variator has two clutches - one that spins up when you pedal the wheels (to start the engine), and another that lets the engine spin up the back wheel when you drive away. Once the back wheel is moving fast enough, the "Starter" clutch has swung out and grabs on too.
About 65 years ago, I used a similar moped to travel from Chatham to Newcastle upon Tyne and it took me about 15 hours of driving non stop along the M2 , A1, the A15 and A19, if I remember correctly. During the night , I stood on the pedals, because my bottom got too flat and needed a rest, but to save time, I rode that thing standing up. Luckily every time I did that journey, I never got wet, nor cold. It is a faithful machine, and I felt sorry leaving it behind when left Britain and I returned to my mother's country. Nice memories, thank you.
I bought an very old Motobecane years ago at a yard sale... in pieces. It was a chore figuring out how to mount the flex-mounted motor. Mine had the variable centrifugal clutch like yours, and would hit break 42mph. DOT ordered these models be modified with a wedge preventing the clutch halves from fully closing (mine wasn't). Unknowing people think the pedals are for riding, but they are only for starting the motor... you pedal, then close the compression valve to start. :) Fun ride!
Thanks so much for the video! I am in the process of helping a friend sell her husband's collection of bikes and I found a motobecane just like yours among the collection. Now I know what the heck it is! There was also a motobecane with "D52" written on it.
Yes, I put a bicycle speedo on my AV88, mine will do about 40-41 mph which surprised me....this is about the speed the chassis goes into death wobble ! I now play it safe and ride 35 mph. Still super fun
Didn't realise you had one of them! My Motobecane Mobylette works the same way. My Peugeot however has a double cariator (not all of them did). It has an "expandable pulley" on the engine like yours, but instead of having a spring to "move" the engine to make up for the tension of the belt, my Peugeot has a system that the tension actually pulls on the big pulley (atytached to pedals) and that pulley "opens" making it smaller, to have higher gearing! Great systems! JP
1959 was the date where this model passed the test who abilitated this model on the road if you want to have an estimation of the year of production you should look on the carburetor or on the jantes
I have a soft spot for orphan modes of transport , and, I earnestly recycle. This moped and two others were pulled from a scrap pile. Took me a while to figure it all out and make parts to get it going again. The other two may be beyond hope. Then again, maybe not.
Glad it helped.! I had a hard time identifying our Motobecane when I 1st got it.. I don't know what "D52" means, maybe it's a model number?? Good luck.
Wow, that's pretty cool... never seen a CVT work quite like that before! And an interesting way of putting it all together with the absolute minimum weight. Stamped steel bicycle-type frame and the engine not so much mounted as just hanging from a hook, partly held in place by the drivebelt itself... I wonder, is it actually light enough that you could hold it up over your head? And, it looks/sounds quite punchy for a 50cc moped, what kind of pace can you get from that? 40+?
Mon Dieu !!! So odd to discover a "blue",french nickname for the 88 Motobec,on the American soil... How did it land here? You really are an amazing man..How are you seen by the average US citizen,héhéhé???The crazy guy,the nutty one who repairs foreigh UFOs ?? Anyway, congratulations for your preservation work, nice to see that otherseas, our products are appreciated (wine apart)
Yes ,it is very rare here, I had no idea how rare until recently. There is only one other in AV88 in Florida. I saved this one from uncertain death as it was about to be thrown away in the trash
axel ayerdis You are the most strange mech of the States. I don't know if they ship overseas, but these kits are state of the art of cheap models.www.ebay.fr/itm/MOBYLETTE-MOTOBECANE-AV88-bleu-1-18-/360917037649?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_71&hash=item540854f251
Kids are so flexible and durable. It wears off later in life, and payment is required for youthful amusement .... due with exponetial interest as we age more... hahaha
With this sh*** new presentation of our channels, we don't see the country but I suppose you are from USA? So, how do you do to have all these French old school cars and motos in the USA?! Even in France it is hard to have that currently! ^_^ Nice to see!

I love how the engine just moves backwards when the variator starts

Loved the girl comments and intervention in the video. I have a motobecane av51 full bone stock working. Greetings from Portugal.

your little girl must be a beautiful teen right now .time flies
Wow, that's nifty, its like someone took a CVT and a clutch and mashed em together.
I know, really creative for the time, still works great!
Yes , pedal power sprockets and smaller chain is on opposite side ( right pant leg side )

@Bluesbreaker2010 ......Yes I do, especially since one of the dual halogens now has a cracked glass.
@BeetleBerlin Yes, good catch, it has a Montgomery Wards Riverside riveted plaque on the other side.....really neat

I feel lucky. Yes, we're in Portland Or. USA
Based on the color, this one might have been sold by Montegomery Wards. They sold Mobylettes as Riverside Mopeds in the late 50s, early 60s.

I remember when Messerschmitts and Isettas were 'everywhere', now they are much sought after treasures.
Man you need to get the round headlight for this thing, rip the internals out and fit it with bright LEDs
The color was the give away. They did have leg shields when new.
wow oldschool
It's a 1962 Messerschmitt kr 200. Check out my other videos and go for a ride in it.
