    To the pocket thing: it depends on the weight of your fabric and construction of the skirt. Pockets in a light fabric or any fabric without proper stabilization will show and flop about. A pocket placed below the waist but anchored to the waistband of a skirt made from a thick fabric will hardly be noticed. I have a skirt made from a heavy twill that I can fit my phone, a water bottle, and my wallet in one pocket and then routinely go looking for my phone because I forget it's in the pocket, I can't feel it because it is properly inserted and anchored and the skirt is in a heavy fabric. TLDR: pockets are better in heavy winter skirts

    First of all: the dress looks great and suits you really well!
    And you are right, the right Dirdl is flattering every woman :D
    For anyone interested in the history of the Dirdl: The Dirdl originally was a dress for working class women in rural areas like maids, farmers and so on. It was fairly convenient because it didn't really get in the way and you could easily just wash and switch the apron. In the late 19th century the middle/upper class caught on and in the cities it was seen as an idyllic dress. Over the course of the 20th century it was modernized several times. Today we have a wide range of different styles. :)
    (I am from Austria by the way.)

    Beautiful dress! I don't like it when pockets are pulling on the side seem of a dress. So I made a skirt with pockets anchored to the waistband. Those I love! I hate bringing handbags everywhere, so at least one sizeable pocket in either my skirt or top is a must!

    Also pockets in skirts, some people add a connecting "band" or strip of fabric that runs from the protruding part of the pocket inside the dress to the waistband that relieves the weight of what's inside the pockets and maintains a lot of how the skirt would otherwise lay/behave.

    Oooh speaking of darts, The Closet Historian did a little demonstration of how to Move the darts into a gathered neckline :O in her latest vid called Making a 1940's Cotton Poplin Dress//Drafting a Gathered Neckline. It's the first thing she does, so it's at the beginning of the vid. I'm sure it's a useful tool in your arsenal that you'd like to have.

    I like pockets in skirts as a quick place to throw my phone when I need my hands free. Usually I wouldn’t keep it in there for a long time. I also like putting my hands in skirt pockets.

    I am living in Austria, all my Dirndls have about 5 cm seem allowance on the side seems to easily fit the garments if you change in size. There is also lots of seem allowance on the straps to get the perfect fit for everyone.
    I haven’t met anyone jet who doesn’t look good in a Dirndl

    I neeed pockets in my skirts and dresses for the little bits and pieces like a handkerchief, my student ID, a mask, housekeys or a rosary or other little pieces, where I don't want to have a whole bag with me. I have nowhere to put my keys if I just want to go for a walk for example. So pockets are absolutely necessary for me :) I find extra bags annoying actually XD

    I always anchor my pockets to the waist seam so they don't flop about when I put things in them. The skirts/dresses I've done this with, you can't tell I've just crammed them with my phone and enough snacks for 3 days. Definitely recommend for the pocket lovers out there.

    I do like pockets in my skirts. However, I fixed that weight distribution problem with a tip I found on Bernadette Banner's channel-walking skirt video.
    (Basically a piece of tape anchors the pocket to the waist seam to support the weight in pocket.)

  • @violetstarla

    Great construction and beautiful fairytale dress. Yes, pockets are only necessary if you like to keep your hands cozy and near your body that's about it. I love skirts and dresses with pockets, but like you mentioned no one likes the weight of things making them feel unbalanced swaying back and forth. Most people simply find comfort putting their hands in pockets in the garments they own because it also looks pretty.

    I hate skirt pockets too! I only like them when its similar style to 18th century pockets that attach to the waistband so it doesn't flop around as much. when pockets are only connected to the side seams of the skirt it becomes floppy and the weight pulls down the skirt too much

    • @zanet391
      @zanet391 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if doing them the 18th century style would solve that. You know, have a slit on each side with the pocket tied under. That way, you can have all the storage you want without it pulling on the skirt.

  • @szbyzan
    @szbyzan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like patch pockets towards the front. On a dirndle you would have pockets in the apron or a tie on pocket for historical accuracy. Then either a pocket slit to the pocket tied under or just tie it on top. Pockets could be very elaborately stitched

    If I put anything in my pockets it is usually something light or traveling a small dostance. Like keys to get the mail, a pen or something else small to take in the other room if my hands are already full. If going out some people, including myself use pockets to rest your hands in. They dont always have to have items in them. Just nice to rest your hands in.

    Pocket in skirt in not mainly for carrying stuff, but for just putting the hand there.
    Sometimes when hands are too full and you just quickly need to keep the phone somewhere and you don't have a bag or maybe the bag will need both hands to open and keep the phone, pockets work.

  • @crashofthemoons

    That is gorgeous!! I'm inspired to make something similar myself! Well done! And... YES on the pocket issue. I don't get why people are so into them. I have many things with pockets and never use them. Ever. I'm a purse girl who also hates that swingy weighted feel in pockets. So with you on that.

  • @JoJo-rr6lm
    @JoJo-rr6lm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are ways to stabilise pockets without relying solely on the side seams. You either make a giant pocket that gets bagged into the waistline (Morgan Donner tends to use this method) OR you attach ribbon from the waistline down to the inner edge of the pocket (think like a suspender holding up your stockings). Sewstine used this technique on a recent project. Or you can sew the pocket to your lining. Patch pockets also have more support spread across the skirt and not just in the side seams.
    I hate bags with a burning passion. I always overengineer my pockets and have a tiny wallet.

  • @mayfair_forest_witch
    @mayfair_forest_witch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always do my pockets attached to the waist (suspended at the waist), so they stay in front and do not flop around. I'm also not a big fan of in-seam pockets, recently taught myself to sew pockets in skirts kinda the way they are in trousers and I love it so much.

  • @Elentarien
    @Elentarien 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to agree with you. I also don't like pockets in skirts for that reason. It moves around too much, the weight is lopsided and it just feels. . .draggy. A small pocket, perhaps, for a kleenex (as someone with allergies, I need it with me at all times. lol) or something small and light. However, I personally just wear tie-on pockets now anyway, so if I were going to make a skirt, I think I'd just add the slit that allowed me to reach through to the tie-on. That doesn't fix the 'lopsided' weight - unless you make it a two-pocket belt, I guess - , but I don't find the separate pocket moves around or drags nearly as much as a skirt pocket does.

  • @blazertundra
    @blazertundra 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also hate that heavy pocket feeling so I anchor all my pockets to the waistband and adjust the size of the pocket based on what I think the skirt can handle. For example, my knee-high skirt made of thinner cotton has a single tiny pocket. Compare to my heavy corduroy jumper dress which has pockets almost big enough to smuggle a chichuahua dog.
    The great thing about making your own fashion is you make it according to what works for you. Pockets or not, that dress looks amazing on you.

      The pocket 'addiction' is actually just about that: it's about clothing being functional in the first place (having pockets to put stuff in) and fashionable/good looking in the second. Of course it's best if it has both but it's also like why do men get functional clothing (and pockets) and women get 'sexy' clothing (without pockets). Basically, it's about women being seen as people rather than fashion objects. (Also just because it's practical haha)

    • @jeanieranson5221
      @jeanieranson5221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@P0nyl0ve
      There's plenty of practical clothing for women available. Most women don't want to look 'practical' though and buy 'fashion' rather than clothing. It's demand fuelled supply, not a patriarchal conspiracy.
      Plus, of course, the whole fast fashion thing. Because if you're willing (and able) to pay more for your wardrobe, you can totally get very well constructed, long lasting clothes. With large pockets. I mean, what do you expect for the prices that regular clothes sell for? Of course, they're cutting corners and choosing visual appeal (like a sleek silhouette) and saving material over practicality. Because that's what makes them the most money. It's really not that deep.

    I usually prefer to not have pockets in dresses and skirts. I also dislike uneven weight and feeling something flopping around, but my bigger problem with it is how it makes the garment look. Often, pockets change the line of the dress or skirt and it’s no longer as flattering. However, there are times when pockets work!

    About pockets: look at Bernadette Banner's video about pockets. There's a way to attach the pocket to the waistband to the skirt so that it doesn't flop around, which would work great in that dress. She also shows how to make historical detachable pockets, which don't move with the dress at all, but you would have to either have pocket slits inside your dress and wear the pocket underneath, or wear the pocket outside of the dress, kind of like a belt pouch. I love pockets.

    I do like pockets in my skirts and dresses, and I usually add them in when making my own, but I only use them for keys or small lightweight objects that I need on hand. I never leave the house without a tote bag or backpack or bag, because I NEED a liter of water on me on ALL TIMES. I don't go anywhere without my reusable water bottle, even if I go out for just 15 min to the nearest bank or grocery store, and I never understood people who go out for the full day and don't need water. So I don't really need pockets, because if I always have a tote or bag with me anyway I can put all my stuff there and don't need to use the skirt pockets anymore.

    My dirdndl has pockets and I didn't even see it had them until I had to turn it inside out to iron it. That dress taught me to always check for pockets because you don't realise how much you miss them until you've experienced 1 dress or 1 skirt with pockets. I also started to wear dresses and skirts way more after I got some more with pockets, it's just weird to hear people who think that it makes the experience worse since that seems to me like you've just never experienced good pockets in a skirt.

    I recently made this dress and blouse. I would love to see an update on how you finished the seams.
    I flat felled mine, and I bound the raw edges of the gathered waist with twill tape because I didn't feel like there was enough seam allowance on the bodice to encase it. I think on my next attempt of this pattern I will either do a lining, or increase the waist seam allowance to encase the raw edges. I think next time I will also recalculate the skirt, so I can have side seams in the right place to install pockets (or just pocket openings, I prefer to reach through the dress to the pockets on my bike shorts)
    Hilariously, I ended up installing the skirt inside out 😵‍💫 and didn't notice until I had bound the waist seam. Luckily, fabric looks good on both sides, and my flat felled seams look very neat even inside out 😅

    I love pockets in dresses so much! Mostly because that means I can easily wear them for work, where I usually run around with a big set of keys, my employee card, my big work phone (handheld landline phone, not mobile phone, though I usually also have my private phone on me). Imagine carrying all that while running across a big building to get a big binder from another office, or just walking to the cafeteria to get a coffee.

    Ig the dangling is your only issue with pockets, you can try securing them with tape, both the beginning and the end to the waistband. That way you won't sacrifice any skirt swooshyness. Sewstine shows how to do it in her Belle's blue dress.

    Lucy you remind me so much of my younger self. I stayed home much longer than some...where I was very welcome and made most of my own dresses. The music in this video is beautiful. And I love the finished dress..it looks lovely on you. Thanks for this beautiful video😊💙 I'm with you about pockets. They have their place, but not in all dresses.☺

    It would be so cute to see a lookbook with just all the different ways you style this one dress I loved hearing your ideas. Also I love vintage style and do not like pockets in skirts and dresses for this same reason. I always have a purse anyway.

    I need pockets in all my skirts and dresses. I am going to be adding them to the ones I currently have in my closet.
    I dont mind feeling my things. I think it is comforting. I alsways need a place for my things and bags are sometimes too much.

    For me victorian type pockets work so much better in skirts. They have a little piece of fabric that is attached to the waistband, so a lot of the weight is carried by the waistband and not the side seam.
    I love how your new dress turned out, the color looks beautiful on you!

    When I sew linen (and I feel the same way about it) zi finish seams as I go along and test fit for every change. This is beautiful though. Linen frays too much and too fast not to bind them up.

    I love that look. I own that pattern and haven’t used it yet. I’ve made one just like it that Vogue put out a zillion years ago. I don’t like pockets except occasionally I’ll include a patch pocket to only hold things for a few minutes. You’re right, the non-pocket opinion is not as popular. That looks fantastic on you. And, that’s my favorite length as well. You don’t trip on it but it has that long look!! Plus, linen is a great fabric!! Well done.

    I understand the discomfort of skirt pockets. I need pockets for work clothes to keep my phone and couple other emergency necessities with me at all times. I can't always keep a handbag on my person. Sometimes the pockets do feel unbalanced and that bothers me too.

    i agree with on the pocket opinion with it being annoying and floppy, however i do like having pockets on dresses because i have somewhere to put my hands. like i don't use them to put stuff in (except my keys for work when im at work), only my hands, otherwise i feel so awkward lol

    Dirndls usually have at least one pocket. It shouldn't flop around because it gets attached just below the end of the bodice, which normally ends at the natural waist.
    This is a beautiful dress and you've done a great job making it. I'm just not sure why a lot of the design elements deviate from any Austrian or Bavarian dirndl pattern I've seen.

      Also I kind of agree about pockets. I've never worn a dress or skirt with pockets, but I never find myself wishing for pockets when I don't have them. I just carry what I need in a tote

    This looks so wonderful! It turned out lovely, especially in that blue linen. I have unfortunately not had luck with this pattern- it always ends up a bit ill fitting and boxy on me- I think it’s the gathered skirt rather than a circle skirt?
