- The beautiful Piaggio P-180 Avanti EVO T7-BBB is seen landing and taking-off at Engadin Airport in Samedan. Flying to and from this airport nested within the Swiss Alps is a great challenge for pilots and plane. Flight procedures and aircraft performances are very strongly affected by those high mountains. Flying through the Engadin Valley takes extreme concentration, skill and teamwork even for experienced pilots especially in crosswind conditions. The Engadin Airport is even the highest in Europe at 5'500 feet and also provides a most beautiful backdrop with lush green meadows, dark forest and crystal blue rivers and lakes. WHEN you want to make a "grand entrance" at a FBO. I've only seen one in real life. I couldn't take my eyes of it as it taxied to the ramp and parked. Absolutely gorgeous! Italians certainly know how to design and build beautiful machines.

@@ttystikkrocks1042 shouldn’t have any issues. Weather would be the only factor, and inherently the pilot's own proffciency at mountain flying.
When they go propeller driven with electric motors this will be a good design
The engineering is also spectacular. The front wing is a second wing (not a canard) that is there to allow the rear wing to be set far enough back that it allows the engines to be mounted close to the centerline (since the fuselage is tapered at that point). This provides easier control in a single engine loss and it moves the engines far enough back that the interior noise is similar to a jet.
That house up the mountain is the PERFECT place to sit and watch aircraft take off!

Why did you discontinue flying the P180?
How were they to fly? It looks like they may be an unforgiving aircraft to fly with the propellers so far back and up high. Are the canards automatically trimmed? If so, what do you do if that system fails.
@@Ryarios They fly just as easy as a King Air, handles well. No Canards, common miss conception, it is a forward wing with build in flaps, they work very well. The whole plane is very well designed, and considering it goes to 410 and can go 400kts, pretty amazing.

I lived in Orange County (So. Cal) years ago. There was a Beech Starship that flew into John Wayne (Orange County) airport. I worked near the airport in the 90's.
By addressing the original model's noise issues, Piaggio created a superior design with the EVO, both in performance and aesthetics.

@@matthiashaenni Here in Italy we often get the unmistakeable voice of the ENAV (national agency for air services) classic P.180 buzzing in circles and patterns above our cities for (I believe) telemetries and measurements. No matter if it is in sight or not, whenever your hear "that" buzz you can bet everything on the Avanti! :)
I live just a mile from the St. Pete/Clearwater Airport, which used to be the US HQ of Piaggio in the USA. Still see one of these spectacular aircraft at the airport almost every day.

I was opportune to be at Piaggio Aerospace in 2015 as part of my Aviation MBA study. My project was centered on Avanti Evo. It's an amazing jet. That's why it is known as the Shark in the Sky.

I live in a far away city where the aircraft usually flies above 25000 feet . There are sometimes training planes flying above . But when this plane flies above me , i can definitely say that is Avanti flying above. It sounds like a Cessna with a huge turboprops.

The best looking turboprop on the ramp or in the sky. I know it doesn’t “need” a pair of fan jets to compete, but it’s an intriguing idea. I’d be surprised if Piaggio hasn’t done a feasibility study of the concept.

Great catch my friend Matt!! The scenery as he comes in to land is incredible. Swoops in no problem. The drone of those Pt6-A67 (?) makes me homesick of the days we had props in test-cells. 15+yrs ago they changed to dynos. Don't underestimate Avanti. Its fast and costs 1/3 less operating costs. A marvel ahead of its time. This is one beautiful bird.

The very best, and most beautiful, aircraft in the world. Fastest turboprop, cheaper to maintain than a jet, and as fast. This is my preferred aircraft flying between Ireland and Scotland when I go to my other house. There is no better experience. Although a flight on the Zeppelin NT nearly stole me away for good. If I had to buy one, I'd buy both.

I flew for an airline for about years, developed a neurological movement disorder and had to retire. Miss flying terribly. Watched the Piaggio development and also flight testing closely. I have say….. I’m divided in its looks. From some angles I find it attractive from others.. a bit awkward. But, I find it’s performance and quality of build absolutely beautiful.
Hi Bret, I'm really sorry to hear that. I wish you all the best. I have suffered from lung disease since childhood. That's why I wasn't even allowed to get my PPL licence. So I just started plane spotting and always filming the planes. It was great to see this Piaggio P.180 at the beautiful Engadine airport. But I am also impressed by the Piaggio P.180's performance.
@@matthiashaenni it’s interesting how so many of us fell in love with aviation regardless of our ability to fly or not. It’s a great industry to watch all of one’s life. When I was young we lived on a large cattle ranch in the mountains just East of Holloman AFB in New Mexico. This was back in the 60’s and 70’s. I remember how exciting aviation was in the US. Everyone seemed to have a license and everything from Suoer cubs to F-4 phantoms were a common sight. I remember F-106’s, F-105’s and Super Cubs, Cessna 210’s and every kind of “future aircraft” being dreamt up. I’m old enough to remember artist renderings of the DC-10 and we had a home near Rosewell NM. Roswell had a closed B-52 AFB and when the 747 first began flying Boeing trained all the worlds first 747 crews at Rosewell in their brand new airlines livery. I bet at any given time, for several years there were 20 747’s doing touch and goes, and basic flying around the area. Use to have lots of people go out to watch the new beautiful airliner. The flight crews were super stars, lol.
@@matthiashaenni thanks. Im just blessed to have been able to fly for a part of my life. I don’t miss the airlines, people in the US have become, well the further WOKE the nation becomes the more crime, violence, and selfishness seems to be taking control. When I first began flying, TWA, PanAm were the perfect dream job. Passengers wore suits and dresses, coach was roomy and everyone was treated like and acted like first class citizens. In 1979 Jimmy Carter deregulated the airline industry but only in a manner that sent all the legacy carriers in a slow decline and the low costs were protected when mainline carriers matched pricing. Long story but companies like Southwest would go to the government and cry “Delta is matching our fares, they are losing money to try and put us out of business”. Then the government would force the legacy carriers to back off. It’s been a near constant decline in quality and a corresponding decline in the kind of passengers that board the aircraft. We never use to need to throw passengers off a flight. Now it’s and very common problem.
Flying the pilot group was and still are wonderful. My era of flying started when the WW2 and Korean War pilots were all retired and the Vietnam era pilots were rapidly filling the ranks. We had pilots from England, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Iran, India, S Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Egypt, and of course the US. It was sooo much fun getting to know all of these men and women.

I had the pleasure of flying short-haul from Zurich to Geneva on the Boeing 747 several times. Those were the good old days, which I remember very fondly.

Very exciting 80 years. I miss the WW2 and Korean War generation. They were some pretty amazing people on the whole. I can’t say that my generation has been as good

We are about to operate one of those beautiful planes. We have received recently one Piaggio Avanti II to be used in our flight operations in Military Police in Brazil. I am very eager to be in the simulator in West Palm Beach very soon and see what it is capable of.

I'm lucky enough to have one of these fly over my house daily (Afternoon) for a decade that I've payed attention to. Sometimes you can see it twice, once in the morning and then usually later in the evening (well after dark). But everytime you can hear it coming for miles. Always fun to bet people that the next plane flying over has backwards engines then seeing their face.
That's so cool to have the Piaggio P-180 flying over your house daily! It must be quite a sight and sound to experience regularly. I imagine at 1700m ASL they probably have to maintain a bit more airspeed to maintain the lift. Likewise noticed the takeoff rollout seemed extended.
Paul, airspeed stays the same, but ground speed is considerably faster on approach and departure at a high elevation airport. For a flat lander pilot, the visual cues can create cognitive dissonance!

Paul, yeah, the perceived airspeed will be greater, while the indicated airspeed will be the same as when the aircraft is being flown at a lower density altitude.
The pilot must attend to the indicated airspeed in this instance, and not freak out about the perceived speed over the ground. The visual information is skewed and can cause havoc for the pilot.

Late 80tes there was a modell like this, the Beechcraft Starship. Unluckiely it was not often sold....
The glider that John Denver crashed had the same outline as this plane, two canard wings on front with two bigger wings on the rear

Maintenance pigs. I work at an airport FBO. we used to have a fractional charter company called AVANTI AIR who used these. This airplane put them out of business. So many Maintenance issues they weren't profitable. You can't hardly give one away. Not very popular in the aviation world.

Fue estupendo ver este Piaggio P-180 en el hermoso aeropuerto de Engadina. Es un avión muy rápido con una velocidad máxima de 740 km/h / 400 nudos.
Esa velocidad ya es la de un P-51 o un Spitfire con motor Griffon con más de 2000 hp. Bondades de diseño evidentemente.
